Children’s BooksNew Books for 2018Ceri & Deri are a dog and cat duo created by exciting new illustrator Max Low; the educational No Time For Clocks (April) and Good To Be Sweet (August) will help young readers with skills such as telling the time, counting and sharing.

The Water Vole family join the world of Celestine and The Hare; Bertram Likes To Sew (March) and Bert’s Garden (August) are gentle stories centered around an environmental activity.

Acclaimed children’s singer-songwriter Nick Cope’s lyrics are transformed into an illustrated picture book format for No I Don’t Wanna Do That, The Very Silly Dog and Why Is The Sky Blue? (April).

Gaspard The Fox, written by BBC broadcaster Zeb Soanes and illustrated by James Mayhew, will publish in May, along with Dan Tyte’s second novel, The Offline Project, a sharp and highly contemporary narrative about the impact of technology on our relationships and perceptions.

Multi-award winning children’s author Malachy Doyle will publish picture books Molly and The Stormy Sea (June) and Ootch Cootch (August).

Two additions to the Lost Lines of Wales series, Bangor to Afon Wen and Rhyl to Corwen (May) are followed in June by a fascinating new strand to Graffeg’s heritage titles, The Lost Tramways of Wales. Other new non-fiction includes A Year In Pembrokeshire, broadcaster Jamie Owen and photographer David Wilson’s year-long exploration of one of Wales’ most visited counties.

accuracy when finding prey in anything up to and including total darkness. These hearing attributes are matched in other owls but it would seem that the long-eared owl has one very specific extra aid to sound gathering. It is possible that the muscles used to raise and lower the 'ear' tufts, also work to change the shape of the ear openings, thus increasing the information gathered; not really 'ears' but helping the owl to hear.

The natural habitat of the long-eared owl is woodland, small copses and wooded areas on the edge of open countryside. It does have a preference for conifers and, whilst not favouring the centre of dense woodland, thick woods planted with 20m wide 'rides' offer a hunting strip for them to glide silently down. The silent glide is common to other owl species but

the long-eared owl is in fact a comparable size to a wood pigeon. Slightly smaller than the tawny owl and slimmer too, it has long feather 'ear' tufts that it raises when alarmed or threatened. The eyes are always a very bright orange but the plumage varies considerably, predominantly a slightly tawny, greyish hue overall with many flecks and dabs of darker brown. When in flight, there is a russet wash of colour under the wings. The facial disk is rich fawn, marked with a slightly paler edge and a thin darker line, and a 'ruff' of feathers down the centre of the face that can be brought over the beak to hide it. The legs and feet are feathered.

As with other owls, the facial disk plays its part in capturing sound and that, combined with ear openings at different heights, gives it pinpoint

The Offline Project by Dan TyteThe Offline Project • Author Dan Tyte• Publication May 2018• PB, 288 pp, 216 x 138mm• £8.99• ISBN 9781912213702

With relentless energy and precise observation, Dan Tyte’s second novel focuses on modern social behaviours and the impact of technology on our lives, relationships and perceptions.

The internet defines Gerard Kane. But after a death in the family and a dumping, can going off-grid save him?

His pursuit of something outside the saturation of data takes him from Cardiff, and a web of family members caught in cycles of selfies and online gambling or relationships which fade without their Instagram filter, to a new community in the Danish woodland.

This sharp and highly contemporary narrative probes our dependence on the internet, and to what extent we might be able to free ourselves from it, a concern of immediate relevance to an increasing number of the population.

Praise for Dan Tyte’s previous novel Half Plus Seven:

‘A lethal cocktail of Bukowski and Mad Men’ NME

‘Unflinching and razor sharp’ Rachel Trezise

‘Dan Tyte should take a well earned bow for his raw and impressive debut’ New Welsh Review

‘A coming-of-age novel snorting with energy, outrage and scatological detail...’ The Daily Mail

Lost Tramways of Wales: Cardiff Lost Tramways of Wales: Cardiff • Author Peter Waller• Publication June 2018• HB, 64 pp, 150 x 200mm• £8.99• ISBN 9781912213122

This new strand in the popular Lost Lines of Wales series documents a second area of Wales’ transport heritage, its now lost tramways.

Horse trams were in use in Cardiff from 1872 and were a vital part of the city’s transport, carrying 23 million passengers in 1904. These services evolved over the course of the century, and the development of the tram and its services follows the growth of the city towards becoming the nation’s capital.

This rigorously researched account, photo-illustrated throughout, details the history of Cardiff’s tramway and the city at the time when these services were in regular use, guiding you through its story station by station.

Peter Waller is the author of numerous works on British transport history, including several regional studies of its tramways.

Lost Tramways of Wales: South Wales and Valleys Lost Tramways of Wales: South Wales and Valleys • Author Peter Waller• Publication June 2018• HB, 64 pp, 150 x 200mm• £8.99• ISBN 9781912213146

Trams were once an everyday sight on the streets of south Wales, with their predecessors, horse-drawn buses, servicing the area since at least 1845. This exploration of a long retired mode of transport gives insight into the daily lives of those in the communities it served, the centres of industry and subsequently of modern Welsh identity throughout this time.

The book taps into aspects of life in Wales which have now vanished, and highlights the rich heritage which remains. Rigorously researched and photo-illustrated, the book guides the reader through the story of tram services in south Wales station by station.

Public transport has particular significance in Swansea, as it was home to the world’s first passenger railway service, carrying fare-paying customers from 1807; trams succeeded steam locomotives until the line eventually closed in 1960. This title recollects a lost aspect of Welsh heritage and the communities the tramway connected during its heyday.

Rigorously researched and photo-illustrated throughout, the book details the history of Swansea’s tramway and the city at the time when these services were in regular use, guiding you through its story station by station.
