Pam Liversidge Building,Engineering Graduate SchoolCompletion: January 2014

The University of Sheffield’s vision to be renowned for the excellence, impact and distinctiveness of its research and research-led learning and teaching has been further realised with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art engineering laboratory and research facility.

Formerly a single storey building, the new, 5,300m2, seven storey graduate school provides accommodation for two 120 seat lecture theatres, three laboratory floors and office space for research and technical staff. Named after one of the UK’s leading female engineers and industrial entrepreneurs, it has become the epicentre of the faculty’s postgraduate teaching and research activities.

Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI)Completion: September 2013

History was made in a corner of Edinburgh’s old town where one of the most futuristic refurbishments in Scotland became the first listed building in the world to be awarded an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM rating.

Formerly Edinburgh’s Old High School, this historic Grade B listed building has undergone a dramatic refurbishment to house the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI), pushing Scotland to the global forefront of low carbon innovation and executive education.

Hosted by the University of Edinburgh, in partnership with Heriot-Watt University and Edinburgh Napier University, the scheme involved the refurbishment and restoration of the existing listed building and the construction of a 2,333m2, two storey, timber frame extension. The resulting facilities are designed to bring together experts from business, government and academia and include a world-class innovation suite, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, an exhibition area, café and office accommodation.

Winner of the coveted RICS Scotland Building Conservation Award, Laura Hall, Chair of the judging panel, described the improved building as “a world class facility”.

GRAHAM FM has demonstrated its flexibility during the contract period working through and agreeing a number of change controls to vary the contract service requirements in response to changes within the University estate including their ambitious estates development strategy.

Since January 2011, GRAHAM FM has provided the University of Hertfordshire with a multi-disciplined Hard FM solution. The scope of the contract includes planned and reactive mechanical, electrical and building fabric maintenance services designed to deliver legislative compliance and a suite of environmental services including legionella control across the University estate, supported by a 24/7/365 Helpdesk.

The Hard FM solution incorporates a multi-campus estate of over 90 geographically dispersed buildings of varying size and criticality and includes teaching, IT, leisure, commercial, conference and office accommodation.

The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ postgraduate accommodation at QUB is located in the heart of the University’s Student Village in a conservation area.

Housing international and postgraduate students and their families, the high-specification accommodation consists of 260 beds and 120 apartments arranged over five blocks of concrete frame with insitu flat concrete slabs varying in height from three to six storeys.

In place of internal communal facilities, the main living spaces look onto garden areas with study/bedrooms located to the rear of the development.

The unusual curvature of the building facing onto a large, south facing garden promotes social integration of students from differing cultural backgrounds whilst ensuring the substantial structure’s visual impact to the local environment is minimised. Fully pedestrianised, the development provides a secure and secluded environment and is very quiet as a result.

North West Cambridge Development Lot 5Completion: September 2016

GRAHAM Construction has enjoyed a long standing relationship with the University of Cambridge having completed a number of projects including the relocation of the CARET (Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies) Library, the Whittle Laboratory extension and the refurbishment and expansion of the Advanced Imaging Centre.

Currently in the first phase of the North West Cambridge Development, the University has appointed GRAHAM Construction to build a 325-bed postgraduate student accommodation scheme. This accommodation has been designed on a house model inspired by collegiate living at the University. The small family ‘house’ groups will be linked to form terraces wrapped around a series of south facing courtyards and gardens, offering a home-from-home environment aimed at promoting learning among students.

University of Salford

Located next to the historical Peel Park and within walking distance of Manchester City Centre, a major new £81m student accommodation complex is underway as part of the University of Salford’s campus redevelopment investment programme.

As one of four partners in a consortium, Salford Village Limited, GRAHAM Investment Projects will jointly invest and develop the property within a DBFO agreement, with GRAHAM Construction as main contractor.

The exceptional new accommodation of nine blocks across 2 separate sites, ranging from five to nine storeys, will

provide apartments at the heart of the campus for 1,367 modern study bedrooms with ensuite facilities. Each apartment will have its own kitchen and lounge and the complex will house a cinema, gym, group study lounges, launderette and TV and games room, creating a studying and living environment that’s second to none.

Situated on existing parkland close to the River Irwell, the site is particularly ecologically sensitive. In line with the client’s wishes for a sustainable and energy-efficient development, a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating is targeted.

University of London

Major construction work to centralise a 21st century campus for a world class institution has begun in the heart of Bloomsbury, London. Ranked 6th best University in the UK and 26th in the world, SOAS is an elite University institution in the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The challenging 18 month design and construction project to refurbish the iconic, Grade II listed Senate House North Block involves the creation of a plaza under a double curvature glass roof and the careful restoration and conservation of five floors of the landmark 1930s building. New accommodation will include a mix of teaching spaces, breakout areas, academic offices and open plan space for professional services. This will significantly enhance the student experience, accommodate a planned increase of 25% of student numbers and bring staff and students together on one centrally located campus.

One of twelve schemes taking part in the BREEAM UK Non-Domestic Refurbishment 2014 Pilot Scheme, this project poses challenging environmental and sustainability standards. Combining our building expertise and knowledge of listed buildings with new technological advances, we are focused on minimising the environmental impact of the renovations and ensuring the environmental sustainability of the building.

The University of Stirling’s four year Student Residences Framework will transform outdated accommodation into well-designed, spacious living spaces surrounded by stunning landscaped areas. The three phase project will replace close to 800 bed spaces in four locations, representing 40% of total campus residential accommodation.

In line with the University’s reputation for delivering a high quality student experience, the new residences provide a mix of ensuite single and accessible bedrooms and self-contained studio apartments, all featuring excellent natural lighting and modern, well-equipped social spaces.

A key consideration for this project is the University’s commitment to sustainable design and the delivery of environmentally sustainable, low energy buildings. From the outset, a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and exceptional performance standards were targeted and to date, we have recorded excellent waste return figures.

Situated in West London, with its main sites located in Ealing and Brentford, the campus of the University of West London (UWL) comprises academic, sporting, catering and entertainment facilities for 15,000 students.

GRAHAM FM provided planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance services for building fabric, mechanical and electrical assets across the University estate. University operations were supported by a site based Facilities Manager and engineers with additional support provided by the GRAHAM mobile maintenance team and a 24/7/365 Helpdesk was used to coordinate and support all maintenance activities.

University of Edinburgh

The redevelopment of the historic Deaconess House has become home to more than 300 Edinburgh University students in the heart of the University’s city centre campus.

A partnership between Mace Real Estate and Edinburgh University with GRAHAM Construction as main contractor has seen the restoration and refurbishment of the original Victorian Deaconess Hospital and the new build of three apartment blocks.

Arranged around a central courtyard, the new blocks of four and five storeys contain a mix of cluster and studio apartments each with a spacious kitchen and dining area. Although Deaconess House is not listed, the building has retained its historic character through the preservation of the striking, original Pleasance façade, stonework repairs and replacement of replica sash and case windows.

The creation of a new heart to the Collegiate Crescent Campus provides almost 7,500m2 of high quality academic, teaching and social space in an impressive new hub building.

Designed to bring staff, students and businesses together for everything from informal social gatherings to more structured events, the three storey development has spacious classrooms, laboratories and lecture theatres as well as a café, open learning zones and a rooftop garden. These are arranged around a three storey atrium bringing light into the heart of the scheme and providing a focus for primary circulation routes.

In line with the University’s commitment to delivering a sustainable estate, the new building achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

Newcastle University

Newcastle University’s new 349 bed student accommodation is set in a prime location in the heart of the University’s 50-acre campus on the edge of Newcastle city centre.

The newly converted Kensington Terrace of nine town houses provides 89 spacious, ensuite and accessible bedrooms with shared kitchen/communal areas and 15 self-contained studios. The majority of rooms are large with nine superior, to appeal to those students looking for extra space and comfort.

Overlooking Newcastle’s Exhibition Park, the newly built Park Terrace development provides generously sized, single ensuite and accessible bedrooms in cluster flat arrangements, with fully equipped contemporary kitchens and comfortable common areas. Built in three blocks these range from 4 to 6 storeys with the top floors featuring zinc clad dormer windows within steeply sloping traditional slated roofs.

Kensington & Park Terrace Student AccommodationCompletion: August 2014

The construction of the building frame using a prefabricated structural framing system is similar to that used by GRAHAM Construction on the recently completed University of West of Scotland in Paisley. A largely traditional masonry and slate external finish is in keeping with the original buildings.

Paisley Campus Student AccommodationCompletion: July 2012

Scotland’s largest modern University operates from four campuses in South West Scotland, one of which is the Paisley Campus. With the aim of bringing more students into the heart of Paisley town centre, an impressive, new, BREEAM ‘Very Good’ student accommodation development now sits in the middle of the University campus, creating 366 bed spaces over five storeys.

The project was part of the University’s £250M investment programme and is comprised of ensuite bedrooms in clusters of 5 or 6, each cluster with its own communal kitchen and living facilities. The ensuite facility is a standardised design provided by prefabricated, fully finished and pre-plumbed GRP pods which were installed in each of the rooms as each floor was erected. On the ground floor, there are 13 rooms for students with disabilities, featuring specially modified kitchen and lounge areas. Additional facilities include a management suite, student lounge and launderette.

The new residences provide a focal point to the campus, a pivotal building which is dynamic and contemporary, reinforcing the University’s vision as a 21st Century institution for learning.

Swansea University is a world-class, research-led university. It currently offers 330 undergraduate and 120 postgraduate courses to 16,800 students. Small Animal HospitalCompletion: February 2009

Part of the University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the integration of this 4500m2 building within the topography of the site allowed for the creation of a large hospital building without ruining the beautiful green space of the Garscube Estate.

A striking building, this facility has won a string of awards including a Civic Trust Award, a RIBA Regional Award (Scotland), the Supreme Award from the Glasgow Institute of Architects, the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award and an ACE Engineering Excellence Award.

A world class centre for veterinary medicine, the Small Animal Hospital is regarded as the most sophisticated in Europe, providing state of the art services for animal owners and practitioners throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland, including the most advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical techniques.

Queen’s University, Belfast

Multi-Discipline Maintenance Service for‘Student Plus’ EstatesStatus: Live

Since December 2008, GRAHAM FM has provided planned and reactive building fabric, mechanical and electrical maintenance services for the Queens University Student Estate through the ‘Student Plus’ Contract.

The contract utilises a site based Helpdesk located in the Student Village and a core team of multi-skilled engineers based on site providing a highly responsive and flexible service, dealing with over 9000 service requests annually.

The Elms Student Village houses over 2000 students in mainly ensuite facilities with shared kitchens on each floor. Each three storey block accommodates approximately 30 students. The Elms Student Village also has 120 apartments for accommodating post-graduate students and their families.

Other accommodation includes:- Off-site student accommodation at various locations comprising a further 200 units.- Queens Sport facilities including a PE Centre, swimming pool and purpose built multi-sport pavilions.- Students Union Building, crèches and Student Services Building.

Measured Term Contract Building, Mechanical & Electrical Minor Works and Maintenance ServiceStatus: Live

GRAHAM FM has delivered reactive mechanical & electrical, building fabric maintenance and minor works services for Queen’s University Belfast for over five years. We have recently been appointed to continue delivering this service up until 2019.

GRAHAM FM self-delivers the majority of the mechanical & electrical and fabric works on this contract using a dedicated site based team.

Ulster University

As part of the Ulster University’s Coleraine Campus Master Plan, a new three storey teaching block will upgrade existing teaching accommodation and link this facility to central building activities.

Located on a greenfield site, the new, 2600m2 concrete and steel frame building will incorporate a 250 seat lecture theatre with classrooms, hub areas and a lightweight, steel framed link corridor to the adjacent central buildings.

In keeping with the University’s environmental sustainability strategy the new building is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Provision of Legionella Temperature Monitoring, Maintenance and Risk Assessment ServicesStatus: Live

GRAHAM Environmental Services provide water management services for the University of Leicester, comprising of over 200 properties across a significant, multi building university campus.

This contract involves Legionella consultancy and water management services, Legionella risk management, monitoring and control, water quality and sampling programmes, Crisis management and emergency response, Compliance auditing frameworks and the provision & maintenance of an electronic management and record keeping solution.

The University of Leicester is a leading UK University committed to international excellence through the creation of world changing research and high quality, inspirational teaching within an inclusive academic culture. They have a student population of 30,000 with four colleges of study.
