Mr Ellis’s Final Girls’ School Soirée

Our hall is a busy venue this week.

On Monday morning we started by going back in time - by a day and two millennia to Palm Sunday and 1st century Jerusalem as Christ entered the city to the adulation of his adoring followers and horror of the Jewish Pharisees. Year 3s’ simple dramatization of the Palm Sunday story brought this conflict powerfully to life. It was great to welcome so many parents to our first Holy Week Chapel service.

On Monday evening, the hall hosted the Girls’ School Musical Soirée, an annual concert by the Girls’ Chapel Choir which is usually performed in Term IV. The soirée is the brainchild of Mr Ellis, and so it was appropriate to move this year’s concert up to Term I before his ’not retirement’ on Friday. The choir sounded magnificent, performing a range of centuries-old and contemporary church music, and some non-secular pieces, too. With some 35 girls in this choir, along with our Cathedral, Boys’ Chapel and Junior choristers - more than 100 pupils in total - the choral life of our school is in great heart and voice.

On Tuesday morning, our second Holy Week service reenacted Christ’s last evening with his disciples, and the washing of their feet. Again, it was wonderful to be joined by several parents.

Our Wednesday and Thursday services are at 8.40am, and on Friday at 2.00pm, followed by Mr Ellis’s farewell concert at 2.45pm-ish.

Dear parent

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of Term I. I think it is true what they say about time going faster as you get older!

Along with our pupils settling into their new classrooms and building a relationship with their new teacher(s), there have been many academic, musical, sporting and cultural events and activities spread across this term. Congratulations to all those pupils who have applied themselves to their potential, tried something new, made mistakes, and persevered, supported and praised others, suspended judgement and allowed something to evolve, and who have been grateful for the opportunities they have. Yes, results on the board are important, but so too are effort and attitude.

It was lovely to attend the Girls’ School Soirée last night, Mr Ellis’s last one at Cathedral Grammar. The girls sang beautifully for Mr Ellis, especially after just the one term together, which is a real credit to his masterful tutelage. We will be saying our thank you and farewell as a school to Mr Ellis on Friday, but I would like to acknowledge and thank Paul for his wonderful years of involvement and service to our school. Last week in Grammar Notes we outlined this involvement, and amazingly it dates back to Paul starting as a Cathedral Chorister. On behalf of our school community, thank you Paul for your dedicated service to our school, and in particular our music department. As we all know, this is a strength of our school and you have played a significant part in this in various ways for over two decades, for which we are forever grateful. We look forward to bidding you farewell in style on Friday.

During Term II we look forward to sharing our strategic plan with you and updating you on aspects of the key pieces of work we are currently undertaking. The opportunity to educate other people's children is a rare privilege, bringing with it a huge responsibility to provide the best all-round education possible as we aim to prepare young people for happiness and success in their adult lives. I appreciate that we have a number of key pieces of work on the table currently, and I thank you for your ongoing support as we work through these. As I have previously said, I can assure you that we are doing what we can to maintain momentum whilst allowing time for things to be addressed effectively. A fine balance, but one we are committed to.

I hope you all are able to find some time to have fun as a family over the coming three- week break.

Creating Moral Citizens - Virtue of the Week is: Responsibility

What is Responsibility?

Being responsible means that others can

depend on you. You are willing to be

accountable for your actions. When things go

wrong and you make a mistake, you make

amends instead of excuses. When you are

responsible, you keep your agreements. You

give your best to any job. Responsibility is the

ability to respond ably. It is a sign of growing

up.

Congratulations! You are practising Responsibility when you…

Take your agreements seriously

Respond ably by doing things to the best of

your ability

Are willing to do your part

Are willing to make amends

Give your best to whatever you do

No Prep Room or Family Room on the Last Day of Term

Please be aware that there is no Prep or Family Room service on Friday 7 April. It is the end of term and the departments go down for the end of term at the following times:

Junior School: 3.00pm

Prep Schools: 3.30pm

Pre-School: 5.00pm

Do Join Us this Week in Chapel

It is Holy Week – albeit a week early by the Church’s calendar and we would be delighted to welcome parents, grandparents and friends to our daily Chapel services during which we join Christ in his final steps towards the Cross and his joyful Resurrection. Years 1-8 begin each morning, Monday – Thursday, with a Chapel service, 8.40-9.15am. Wednesday morning is a service of Holy Communion and so will finish slightly later at 9.30am. The final chapter is in our early Easter service on Friday at 2.00pm.

Immediately after the Friday service the Prep Schools will celebrate the Grammar career and service of Mr Paul Ellis which began as a Cathedral chorister, has included time served on the school’s Board and as a member of the music staff and as Director of the Girls’ Chapel Choir since 2002. He has also been the Cathedral’s organist and Director of Music, did a brief 20 odd years across the road as Director of Music at Christ’s College, is the President of the Royal School of Church Music in New Zealand and the current organist and choir director at St Michael and All Angels.

Mr Ellis’s celebration will begin at approximately 2.45pm, after chapel, and parents are warmly invited to join in the hurrah!

Visible Cyclists

With daylight saving heralding winter’s gloom, those pupils who cycle to school require some form of high viz for their safety – a vest, jacket or a back-pack cover. The Uniform Shop sells covers (complete with a light) which are designed especially to fit the Grammar back-pack.

April School Holiday Programme Y1-8

Thank you for your support of the April School Holiday Programme. This will go ahead now as scheduled and there are still places available if you wish to enrol your child.

Welcome to the last week of the Pre-School termly programme. The Fun Times Holiday Programme runs for next three weeks.

This week, we welcome Chloe Sha to Pre-School and know that you will make her and her family welcome to our special place. As we welcome Chloe, we farewell Katherine Higgins and Tony Chen who start their school journey in Y1 next term. We celebrate their graduation on Thursday at 9.00am.

As I wrote Grammar Notes this week, I was reminded of what a fun-filled, extremely busy and amazingly productive term we have had.

We started the term welcoming in seven new children and their families. Each of these children has settled into the Pre-School family and enhances the teaching and learning programme with their ideas, voices and amazing abilities.

The Pre-School environment is continuing to evolve and we have been thrilled to receive some wonderful new furniture to support our programme. The glue gun station has enabled children to bring the ideas once drawn on paper and modelled with sellotape to life with hot glue. The children’s construction is more detailed and defined, and they work collaboratively to make creations.

The home corner furniture has allowed for creative imagination to continue to grow, and brought dramatic play further into the day. The junior bed has proved a favourite, serving variously as a hospital bed, an emergency animal shelter, a hut where Eskimos live, a cave to hide from dinosaurs and simply a place to play families.

Our outside environment has had the wonderful planter box built and, after last week’s trip to Bunnings, is now planted with winter vegetables which the tamariki cannot wait to water and look after.

Throughout this term, we have continued our fun outings from the week’s swimming at Aquagym, to the trip to Park House to get soil for the planter box and the Bunnings’ trip where the children were shown around the garden centre and planted their own herb plant in their individually painted pots. We will continue to use the school minibus to take small groups on outings to support our programme and enable the children to enjoy new and exciting experiences.

The children at the Pre-School this term have continued to grow, learn and flourish in the environment that supports them to take risks, try new and exciting challenges, and work individually or collaboratively to reach their goals. They presented a wonderful celebration of their sunflowers during the Harvest Festival service and last week for the first time ever in Grammar history the Pre-School lead Principal’s Assembly. They proudly taught the Prep Schools about sustainability and what they have been doing to ensure they help protect their special place: Pre-School.

Miss Dowgray joined our Pre-School team this term to support our physical education programme. She runs two fantastic sessions each week and this is one of the weekly highlights, along with Donna who leads yoga. The children really enjoy having different teachers coming to work with them.

Maankitangi and Kaitiatangi have and will continue to be a strong focii for the Pre-School. Respect is a virtue of the school and a virtue that the Pre-School staff support to ensure that the children have an understanding of it in action.

We are certainly looking forward to Term II, and welcoming the nine new children and families who will be joining us. Bring on Term II! See you back here Monday 1 May.

Lenten Loving Wall

The Junior School children have been learning about Lent – the preparation time before Easter. We have created a Lenten Loving Wall in the Junior Hall. The children have been working hard to help other people in some way. Their acts of kindness/helpfulness have then been written on a heart and placed up on our wall.

The following photo shows Joshua Paddyachee busking outside the St Martin's New World. He raised money for the Blind Foundation and their guide dogs. This was his act of kindness and it is now up on our Lenten Loving Wall inside one of the many hearts.

This is Holy Week, and the school’s Easter Chapel Service on Friday replaces our Junior Assembly. You are most welcome to attend this service in the hall, starting at 2.00pm.

Junior School closes on Friday at 3.00pm. Please note that there is no Family Room.

On pages 7 - 10 there is a range of important information about Term II, and especially events in the first week of term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back, safe, sound and well-rested on Monday 1 May.

Mufti Day

Last Friday, the Prep School boys and girls came to school dressed in mufti as a fundraiser for our BOSS charities. Amongst the costumes worn under the theme of Dream Job were pilots, architects, racing car drivers and footballers, as well as a banana and a galactic overlord or two. The day proved to be an enjoyable and productive one, with funds raised for the various charities via gold coin donations.
