Happy New Year!! The beginning of a new year is
so promising and I so look for-
ward to see your children con-
tinuing to grow and flourish!
January is a busy month with
lots of assessments occurring.
First through 6th graders will be
taking the MAP test, check with
your child’s teacher for the
specific dates. All grades will be
administered the DIBELS assess-
ment on January 16th and 17th.
The data from these assess-
ments assist us with instruction
for your children. As a team,
we look at the data for each and
every child and ensure that your
child is moving forward . We
offer enrichment and support as
needed based on data from the
MAP and DIBELS. Teachers will
be sharing your children’s re-
sults once assessments are com-
plete. Please feel free to contact
them or myself if you have any
questions about these assess-
ments or the results.
I wanted to say THANK YOU
to all the parents who came to
volunteer, so that the staff could
have a Holiday Potluck together.
We could not have done it
without you!!
A Parent Café is on the calendar
for January 13th. Please keep
your eyes open for more infor-

Maybe she could study them in the mornings while she eats breakfast instead. Don’t forget to praise your child for her effort each step of the way. “I am proud of you for studying your multipli-cation facts this morning.” And when she achieves her goal, celebrate the way her hard work paid off!

Title I Tidbits
Help your child follow these steps for
achieving a goal
January is a time for taking stock and setting goals. Most people make some type of New Year’s resolutions. Then two weeks later, many realize that they haven’t followed through. Kids are no differ-ent. Why not make this the year that your child learns how to achieve the goals she sets for herself? When your child sets
a goal, encourage her to choose one she can reach in a short time frame. Then, help her follow these four steps for achieving the goal:
1. State the goal. “My goal
is to learn my multiplication facts.” She should write it down and post it where she will see it.
2. Plan how to meet the
goal. “I will make flash cards and study them for 15 minutes every night. I will ask Dad to quiz me on Fridays.”
3. Talk about the goal with
others. This builds commit-ment to the goal. Your child should tell her teacher what she plans to do.
4. Do each step in the
plan, one at a time. If prob-

to our school’s fundraising
efforts. The machine is located
near the gym entrance and for
50 cents, students can purchase

choice from several different
selections. Selections are up-
dated regularly and we have
our own customized “School
Spirit” stickers as well!
Since May 2016, when our
stickers first arrived, we have
made a total of $235.47. All

If your child has a medical
condition preventing them
from going outside, a written
note from the doctor is
required.
We also recommend label-

Should inclement weather
arrive in the area once school
has started, it is the policy of
GPS NOT to dismiss school
early! School will dismiss at
their normal times, unless a
Tornado Warning has been
issued. GPS will not dismiss
students to go home during a
Tornado Warning unless a

office has been informed of by
the parent/guardian. Hot lunches on the day fol-

In the event that our school
is closed due to inclement
weather or other unexpected
emergency, there will be NO

day and all evening activities
will be canceled.
If we have a Two Hour
Delay, classes will begin at
10:28 am, there will be NO 6th
grade choir, band, or orchestra classes - and breakfast will
NOT be served. Busses will
run their normal routes, just
two hours later.

2017-18 Preschool Open House & Registration
Thank you for considering our early childhood programs! In each of our preschool programs, we use
the highly endorsed Creative Curriculum®. We individualize instruction and address all the im-
portant areas of learning from math and social skills to reading and the arts.
To register for our Community Education tuition-based programs for children ages 3 to 5 for the
2017-2018 school year, join us at one of our preschool open houses. There will be a nonrefundable
enrollment fee due at the time of registration. Registrations taken the night of open house will only
pertain to the host school. If you want to register at a particular school, you must attend that site for
the open house. After all open houses are held, we will continue to take enrollments for our tuition-
based preschool locations on a first come, first served basis in the Community Education office.
Three-year-olds must be 3 by September 1, 2017 and 4-year-olds must be 4 by September 1, 2017.
The tuition-free, Great Start Readiness Program has no enrollment fee but, requires
an application to be filled out through Kent Intermediate School District. Find out
more at the open houses or call 254-6554 (Option 2).
January 19, 2017 – Open House 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

East Elementary- We offer Great Start Readiness Preschool, a tuition-free program for children who
are 4 by September 1, 2017. It is a full day program. For more information on this program, please
call 254-6554 (Option 2).
Please note: Preschool sections must have at least 10 students to run. If enrollment for a section is
low, you will be notified as soon as possible, but no later than the week of August 1. We intend to
offer sections at the schools listed above, but preschool locations for 2017-2018 remain tentative
until kindergarten registration has been finalized. A larger than anticipated enrollment in kindergarten
could potentially displace the location of a preschool class.
