PRINCIPALS REPORT

Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School has achieved great success this term, and I

would like to acknowledge the support and contribution of staff, students and parents in this success.

As has been explained in recent email correspondence, all Public Schools NSW are currently evaluating

their plans and strategies to ensure they are delivering the best outcomes for students. We have

completed a student ‘Tell them from me’ survey and are now in the process of completing the staff

and parent ‘Tell them from me’ surveys. The results of these surveys can only be considered valid if we

have large numbers of respondents. I would like to encourage all parents to complete this survey so

that the data can be used to inform our school planning and decision-making. A huge thankyou to the

parents who have already provided detailed feedback via email or in discussion workshops on policies

and procedures that we are currently reviewing.

We have had many parents join us this term for a range of activities and for celebration of student

success. This has included:

• Parent and Citizen meetings

• Parent –Teacher interviews

• Parent workshops

• Academic and merit awards presented at the Education Week recognition assembly in week 3

• Storylines Riverside Theatre performance evening in Education Week, showcasing our extraordinary

creative and performing arts talent.

• Student leadership induction ceremony, recognising the contributions of our student leaders and

welcoming in our 2017-18 leaders, including our new captains, vice captains and senior prefects.

• A very entertaining HSC Drama and Music showcase evening, where we were able to see some of the

HSC pieces performed by our students.

• Year 12 Graduation

Students have been engaged in many activities, including those mentioned above. The student

leadership team have conducted fundraising, designed and delivered a school uniform survey to

parents and students, and hosted a visiting Japanese school.

Congratulations to all our year 12 students who have successfully completed their HSC at Granville

South Creative and Performing Arts High School. I wish them all the best for their HSC examinations

next term and in their future endeavours.

This term our school completed an External Validation process, where we provided evidence of our

performance as a school to representatives from the Department of Education. This evidence is

provided against a framework of school excellence. Many staff contributed to the preparation of this

evidence and we were able to showcase the work of very dedicated staff and the excellent work of

students across many areas of the school. A team of executive met with the Department of Education

representatives to discuss our evidence and respond to questions. They were very interested in our

work and congratulated the school on the dedication to success for students and our understanding of

the inter-relationship between student wellbeing and student learning. The results of this validation

process will be provided in the Annual Report which will be posted on the school website in April next

year.

We also completed a Vocational Education Audit this term, which covers our delivery of Sports

Coaching, Entertainment, Hospitality and Retail. This required the school to provide documentation

and evidence of compliance. Both staff and students were interviewed during the process of the audit.

Once again our staff were congratulated on their commitment to success for our students and their

understanding of student learning needs. Students interviewed spoke highly of their positive

experiences in Vocational Education at Granville South.

Over the holidays and into early next term we will complete the upgrade of electricity supply to the

school in preparation for the installation of more air-conditioning in classrooms. The installation of air-

conditioning has to go to tender before work can commence on installation. There will also be painting

works completed in various parts of the school, improving the facilities at Granville South.

I wish everyone a restful school holiday and look forward to term 4.

On the 16th and 23rd August 2017, 2 parent workshops commenced in Granville South CAPA High

School. Chloe from Granville Multicultural Community Centre and I, sat together and chose 10 topics

that we believe parents of our community would be interested in. A survey was then created and

emailed out to all parents of Granville South CAPA HS asking for parents to indicate 2 topics that would

be of best interest. After receiving responses it was established that “Keeping up with my family living

costs” and “What do I do when my kid doesn’t want to go to school” were the 2 popular topics that

parents were fascinated in attending.

Guest speakers were organised to talk about each topic and pathways for parents to overcome obstacles that they are currently experiencing. On Wednesday 6th August at 10.ooam, parents attended the “Keeping up with family costs” workshop. The first guest speaker Ms Sharon Yeh is a qualified financial counsellor who works at GMCC, spoke about “what do I need to know and who can I speak to if I need help”. The second speaker of that day was Mr Julian Jeyakumar from Department of Human Services (Centrelink), who spoke about Family Tax Benefit and other services, Centrepay, digital services and enquiries about children to turn 16 years. This was very successful, as Mr Jeyakumar helped each parent individually set up a Centrelink and My Gov account, so that they are able to access all payments, messages and enquiries through their phones at any time. Each parent was given a folder of pamphlets, websites, interpreting options, pen and helpful documents put together by the Centrelink team. The following Wednesday 23 August, “What do I do when my kid doesn’t want to go to school” workshop was run. Ms Deneille Lee, who is a qualified Home School Liaison Officer, Department of Education spoke about ‘What do I need to know as a parent”. She familiarised all parents about risks and disadvantages their child has when not attending school. She provided techniques on how to make the child want to go to school and thoroughly explained the consequences a parent can face from the Department of Education if children are not attending. Our second speaker was Ms Eva Atkins, who is a qualified Community Engagement Coordinator, TAFE. She delivered very significant information and options about different career pathways when a child does not want to complete school. Ms Atkins, provided parents with useful numbers and TAFE members to contact to discuss courses and book interviews for students and parents. Overall, these parent workshops were a huge success, I personally range each parent who attended and asked for their feedback and whether or not they benefited from these workshops. Thankfully I was given positive outcomes from each parent and was told that if any more workshops were to be organised, they would happily join as each parent walked out with many questions answered. A big thank you to all parents and staff who attended an I hope to see you all in future workshops.

On Friday 11th August, Granville South CAPA HS hosted a delegation of students and Government officials from Yamaguchi City in Japan. This was part of the Department of Education's cultural exchange program, where identified schools host visiting students to enable them the opportunity to experience an Australian school.

The guests were very excited when they arrived, with our school sign welcoming them in Japanese, thanks to Ms Nguyen.

Our student leaders prepared a tour schedule for the morning and looked after their buddies throughout the day. Students shared learning and cultural experiences, with the visiting students running 3 workshops for our students, a traditional Japanese card game, calligraphy and origami. Mr McLean and Ms Muljono prepared lessons for our visitors. The day ended with a combined concert in the hall involving ensemble performances and a performance from the Japanese guests. Many of the Japanese students and their Granville South Buddies are still in communication through social media.

Sydney Youth Connect

Sydney Youth Connect runs the "Who I Am?" program within schools across the state of NSW. The

program is designed to facilitate positive change and growth in young people. Sydney Youth Connect

realise the genuine efforts and support that our young people need both in and out of school, the

need for mentoring and leadership programs.

10 Year 9 girls were chosen to participate in the ‘Who I Am’ program that was designed to teach the

girls how to require certain qualities such as loyalty, trust, understanding, objectivity, passion,

compassion, teamwork, insight, foresight, and most importantly resilience.

The "Who am I?" program is a 14 week program that entails 14 in-depth workshops by psychologists,

sporting elite, social workers and inspirational mentors. The student participate in significant

physical components such as the Harbour Bridge climb, Penrith White Water Rafting, Thunder Jet

boats, The Dark Rooms and SES Volunteering.

The idea of the programs is to begin the cognitive process to change at the very least, to build a

positive framework for behaviour.

SALSA (Students as Lifestyle Activists)

This year a select group of Year 10 students have been given the exciting opportunity to be Peer Leaders as part of the

SALSA program. The SALSA program involves Year 10 students who are trained by students from The University of Sydney

to deliver nutrition and physical activity lessons to Year 7 students. The program hopes to teach students the importance of

maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity, while at the same time giving Year 10 students the

opportunity to develop their leadership skills and confidence by teaching classes themselves. The training day for the SALSA

program took place on the 26th of July and was a great success. Congratulations to those Year 10 students involved.

GRADE SPORT SENSATION

We have had some success in Grade Sport this term with our Girls Oztag team coached by Ms Wright

winning their Grand Final against Merrylands High School. This was a tough match up for our Granville

South Oztag girls, however, this did not phase the team’s ability to come out on top. Well done to Mrs

Wright and her team as well as our other grade sport teams who were unfortunate in making the finals

but competed well throughout the term. Thank you to Mr Campbell, Mr Kabbara and Mrs Jaitani for

their efforts with Grade Sport this term.

GIRL POWER AT THE NRL JAMES GRAHAM 9s

Big congratulations to Mr Tsekas and his U16s Girls Rugby League team in winning the Grand Final. Mr

Tsekas is very proud of the girl’s efforts and the way they performed on the day, “the girls fought hard

throughout the tournament and were basically the stand out of the competition in my opinion”. Mr

Tsekas was quite adamant that the girls wanted to win the competition and they did everything they

could to make sure it happened “never have I seen such a dedicated team and I always demand the

best” Mr Tsekas said in a recent interview. U16s Girls Rugby League team look to progress in the

competition next year and hope for the same result. Unfortunately the boys team were unsuccessful in

progressing to the finals according to Mr Latulipe “the boys did all they could to keep up with the

tempo of the games but most teams seem too strong to beat”. Mr Latulipe also stated that they look

to improve next year and hopefully progress further in the competition “it’s great to see a good bunch

of boys who went out to have some fun and enjoy the game we love”. A big thankyou to Mr Latulipe

and Mr Tsekas for organising the event.

FUTSAL TEAM’S LAST STAND

Mr Garrido organised a number of Futsul teams to compete at the annual NSW Futsul competition at

Condell Park in Term 2. The junior teams played well throughout the day, however, it was the senior

team that stood out amongst the surrounding competition. Proven to be a real threat to other teams,

our Granville South seniors fought hard to progress into the finals. Unfortunately, the boys came off

second best against a well-drilled futsal team that went onto win the tournament. “Definitely proud of

the boy’s efforts and hope that next year we can progress further and win the competition” said Mr

Garrido. Thank you to Mr Garrido for organising the teams to go to the tournament and as well the

junior and senior teams that competed.

Thank you to PDHPE Head Teacher Mr White who took our U13s Boys Rugby League team to the

prestigious Belmore Oval, Home of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to compete in the Hazem El

Masri Cup. The results throughout the day did not go Granville South’s way and did not reflect the

efforts of the boys, however, Mr White thinks there is definitely plenty of room to improve as a team.

The team showed spirit and heart throughout the day playing against some tough teams “despite the

score, the boys dug deep every game and I commend the boys on their efforts and their ability to work

together as a team” said Mr White in a recent interview. Stand outs of the day included Moustapha

Mahfoud, Hassan Hammoud and Sami Sakoua. Well done to Mr White on taking this team and the

boys.

ABOVE & BEYOND

Sport this term has unveiled a number of student athletes who have progressed not only from Zone

representative level but to the regional teams for Sydney West competing at various locations in NSW.

Congratulations to Brodie Dillon, Akosita Masima and Atelina Rakuli who were selected to play for the

Sydney West Girls Rugby Union representative team. The girls travelled down to the nation’s capital to

compete in the state championships where they played exceptionally well, overall came second in the

state. In addition, congratulations to Ian Norman who was also selected for the Sydney West team in

Lawn Bowls and competed in Dubbo for the state title. This is a massive achievement for Ian as he is

now ranked 4th in the state for Lawn Bowls. Well done to our outstanding athletes and wish them all

the best in their future endeavours in their respective sports.

Term Three is always a busy term for our Creative and Performing Arts Faculty and this year was

certainly no different. We have enjoyed every moment of these last ten weeks as we’ve celebrated the

outstanding achievements of our CAPA Superstars allowing them every opportunity to shine as bright

as they possibly can!

With the HSC Performance Showcase, Drama Festivals, our CAPA Showcase, a number of

performances at formal school assemblies, and our HSC examination and submission dates, there were

certainly many opportunities for us to recognise the work of these students!

Finally, to our graduating Year 12 CAPA students: congratulations and good luck! The energy,

dedication, and enthusiasm you have demonstrated towards your studies in the Creative and

Performing Arts throughout the years, but particularly this year, has been truly inspirational. We wish

you all the very best in your future pursuits and know that wherever you dedicate your energies on

your next journey you are bound to be successful!

-Mrs Collins, on behalf of the CAPA Faculty

“Storylines” Creative and Performing Arts Showcase 2017 In celebration of Education Week, this year’s Creative and Performing Arts Showcase entitled

“Storylines” was another outstanding celebration of our CAPA Ensembles and Elective students. Held

at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre for an audience of friends, family, and special guests our 2017 CAPA

Showcase was both a year of ‘firsts’ and a celebration of the end of an era with a number of Year 12

Drama and Music students performing in their last CAPA Showcase. We congratulate our Year 7

Ensembles students, and students from other year groups, who performed in their first Riverside

showcase. We’d also like to recognise a very special item presented at this year’s CAPA Showcase: A

live painting item presented by four Visual Arts Ensemble students. Accompanied by students from our

Music Ensemble, this group performed “Space Cowboy” as our Visual Artists created an artwork

inspired by the energy and style of the piece. It was a fantastic item and we congratulate these

students, as led by Ms Wright, on their efforts. This year’s CAPA Showcase was a diverse display of the

many talents of our CAPA Superstars and we congratulate students and staff on what was a truly

outstanding CAPA event!

HSC Performance Showcase + Year 12 Major Works Presented for External Assessment

A big highlight this term has been our HSC Performance showcase! Held in Week 2, this ‘invitation

only’ event was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 12 Drama and Music classes to perform for their

friends and family showing their loved ones exactly where they have been channelling their energies in

these subjects. Drama students presented Group and Individual performance pieces, and Music

students presented one of their four HSC songs. This gave our performers the opportunity to ‘practice

being nervous’, an important although often overlooked rehearsal strategy in preparation for the HSC.

Congratulations once again to these Year 12 students on their outstanding performances.

This showcase was all in lead up to some very big, important deadlines for our Year 12 CAPA classes

this term- their individual HSC dates! Congratulations to our Visual Arts, Drama, and Music classes who

all worked to ensure that their HSC submissions and performance presentations represented their very

best work. You all deserve to be incredibly proud of your efforts and we hope you are rewarded with

HSC results reflective of the time and energy you have put into your preparation.

Drama Ensemble Performance News This term was a very busy term for the students of our Drama Ensemble. In addition to their performance at our CAPA Showcase, Storylines, the ensemble performed both at the Seymour Centre as part of the Arts Alive Concert series and at NIDA as part of the Ultimo Public School’s Drama Festival. Performing “Hercules has Some Fun” these students are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Yummy Yum Yum ! the students from Year 10 Food Technology were at it again. Last time the Food

Technology students were busy cooking up a buffet treat. This time they were busy baking up a great

treat of ‘assorted muffins’- creative and innovative masterpieces to die for!!!!!!!!!!

Granville South staff celebrating SASS week had the task of judging the muffins their taste buds were

tantalized and staff were amazed at the different flavours and unique decorations that were presented

Congratulations Year 10 Food Technology you’ve done it again !!!!!!! Your perseverance, creativity,

time, energy and passion all paid off. Also a special thanks to Ms Mazzei (SLSO) who supported the

students. The students surprised themselves that they demonstrated skills that they thought they

never had. They believed in themselves and took the risk, it was all worth it. It was a fun experience

showcasing the student’s creativity and practical skills.
