Dedication

Betty Jean Cole Cook

The Granville County Genealogical Society, 17 46 would like to dedicate the first issue of Granville Connections, to Betty Jean Cole Cook, who died December 16, 1994.

Mrs. Cook was an avid family researcher and a long time supporter of the formation of a genealogical society in Granville County. When the Society was finally a reality, Mrs. Cook was unable to attend meetings, but continued to support the efforts of those involved with enthusiasm. One of the things Mrs. Cook was most proud of was her Charter Member designation in the newly formed Society.

The Granville County Genealogical Society, 1746 wishes to acknowledge the untimely loss of Betty Jean Cole Cook by dedicating the first issue of Granville Connections in her memory. She will be missed.

From the Editor ...

Putting together the first journal for an organization that has been as long awaited as the Granville County Genealogical Society, 1746, was as intimidating as it was exhilarating. The Society members are an enthusiastic group to work with and the newly elected Executive Board is dedicated and supportive. Two people, however, have stood out above the others in helping to get this journal off to a successful start. Jo Anna B. McDaniel has been an unending source of encouragement and inspiration. She has been generous not only in sharing her knowledge, but also in the exposure she offers in the genealogical community. She lets me tag along, answers my questions and introduces me to people like Ransom McBride, former editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. Through studying his impressive efforts in the NCGS Journals, a new understanding came as to how a journal should look. Also, a new understanding as to the smile of sympathy he wore when told he was meeting the publications editor of the newly formed Granville Society. This is a time consuming and demanding job, but it has been made much easier by those mentioned above, to whom I owe a mountain of thanks.

One of the most rewarding discoveries in editing this publication was in the choice of a name for the journal. Having moved to North Carolina just a little over a year ago, and with no known ancestors in this area to track, I assumed I would be resigned to helping rather than participating in local research. I was told, more than once, to just be patient. Sooner or later I'd discover an ancestor in Granville. I was skeptical, a non-believer, right up to the moment I found my long lost ancestor right here under my nose. It became evident that sooner or later, most, if not all researchers, will discover their Granville Connections. We hope this journal will help you find the way home.

FORMATION:

FORMATION AND SETTLEMENT OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

THE SHORT STORY

Jo Anna B. McDaniel, CGRS 4178 Indian Trail

Oxford, NC 27565

Granville County, NC, was formed in 1746, from Edgecombe County, NC, and encompassed the current counties of Granville, Franklin, Vance, and Warren. Granville County was named in honor of John Carteret, Earl Granville, who inherited the title in 1744, from his great-grandfather Sir George Carteret, one of Carolina's original Lords Proprietors. Land was granted to settlers by agents of Earl Granville for the payment of annual quitrent fees. [John Carteret, Earl Granville, died in 1763; and the Granville proprietary was inherited by his son Robert. Due to difficulty gaining control of the inheritance, Robert Carteret, Earl Granville, was not able to do anything about his North Carolina holding.] During the Revolution, the land was confiscated by the new state of North Carolina. After the war, heirs of Robert Carteret, Earl Granville, tried to regain title to the property. Their efforts finally ended with the death of legal counsel.

"This turn of events probably was fortunate ... as ... the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolution [likely] prohibited a state from invalidating English titles to property." 1

BOUNDARIES : There was no specified western boundary to Granville County until 1752, when Orange County was formed. Other bordering areas of colonial Granville County were: Northampton, Halifax, and Edgecombe Counties to the east; Johnston, later Wake County [changed in 1771], to the south; and the State of Virginia to the north. Johnston County was formed the same year that Granville County was formed; however, in 1753, the dividing line between Granville County and Johnston County was authorized to be altered slightly. In 1764, Bute County was formed from the eastern portion of Granville County. Bute County was abolished in 1779. Franklin and Warren Counties were formed in 1779, from abolished Bute County. A portion of Granville County was annexed to Warren County in 1786. In 1777, Caswell County served as the western boundary to Granville County until Person County was formed from Caswell County in 1779; the line between Granville and Person Counties was altered slightly in 1871. In 1881, Vance County was formed from parts of Granville, Franklin, and Warren Counties. 2

SETTLEMENT: Granville County, a frontier county with available land for settling, was attractive to colonists from areas where the land was owned and land purchase prices were rising. Aiding, perhaps, in the settlement of Granville County was an established trading path into the area from Virginia. Although a majority of the early settlers to Granville County were from Virginia, others who sought land and homes in Granville County were from diverse areas.

INTRODUCTION: Today, WILLIAMSBORO is a country crossroads on US Highway 39N, between the town of Henderson, NC, and the NCN A state line. According to William S. Powell, The North Carolina Gazetteer, a Dictionary of Tar Heel Places, (Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1968), p. 535: the area of Williamsboro was first called "The Lick" for a salt lick that was located nearby. When William Byrd and his party passed through the area in 1728, running the dividing line between Virginia and North Carolina, they found many hazelnuts growing along a stream in the vicinity and named the stream Nutbush Creek. Thus, the place once called "The Lick" was later called "Nutbush". In 1786, a town named "Williamsborough" in honor of Judge John Williams (1732-1799) was ordered to be laid out. Williamsborough was incorporated in 1806.

James VAUGHAN of Williamsborough, Granville Co., NC, brought suit against Thomas MITCHELL of same, for breach of contract. A document pertaining to the suit contains copy of VAUGHAN & MITCHELL'S Articles of Agreement, dated 12 March 1810. These Articles of Agreement describe the furnishings of the "Eagle Tavern" in Williamsborough and state that EAGLE TA VERN adjoined the "church lot." Extract of the Articles of Agreement follow. The following article was found in the April 27, 1876 issue of The Morning Clarion, Vol. 1, No. 15 (Oxford, Granville Co., NC), pg. 3 and is available for viewing on microfilm at the Richard H. Thornton Library. The punctuation and spelling is as it appears in the article.

ENTERTAINMENT--According to announcement the concert came off at the Orphan Asylum, Tuesday night. It was entitled the "Festival of the Seasons," and they were indeed, beautifully represented and reflect great credit upon those. who took part in it. Our pen as well our brain refuses to come to our aid, therefore we cannot describe the beauty and grandure the stage presented, filled as it was with nymph like forms of youth and beauty; suffice it to say the scene was enchanting. The costumes were tasty, and elegantly gotten up.

Our space is too small to allow us to comment upon all those who took part in this bewitching entertainment deserving it, but will allude to one or two who, owing to their extreme youth, attracted our attention. The two little Misses E. and A. POWELL, who represented Dew Drops, were lovely emblems and reminded us forcibly, in their innocence and beauty, of the dazzling dew drop resting on the Lilly, the loveliest of flowers, in the early mom. We will also add that those who represented Love, Peace, Hope and Joy, played their parts admirably., The mask, as well as we can judge, was excellent. We hope this will not be the last entertainment of this kind, but that we will ere long have another.

Jesse Dean Leonard Dean

4600 Quail Hollow Dr. Raleigh, NC 27609

Jesse "Redhead" Dean was born October 23, 1841, the son of William and Sarah "Sally" Duncan Dean, the grandson of Jesse C. and Sarah Carnal Dean and the great-grandson of Richard and Frances Slaughter Dean--the forefather of most of the Dean family in Granville County. Jesse was raised in Granville County on the farm of his father and mother, the youngest son in a family of two brothers and five sisters.

As a young man, Jesse left home to serve in the Confederate Army in the North Carolina 55th Regiment, Company K, during the Civil War. Company K was composed mostly of men from rural Granville County. The North Carolina 55th Regiment participated in many of the great battles of the war. After the war, Jesse Dean returned home where he resumed his usual occupation as a tobacco fanner.

On December 6, 1871, Jesse "Redhead" Dean married Margaret J. Dement, the daughter of Thomas P. and Harriet Pitchford Dement. Jesse and Margaret Dement Dean's home place was located along Cub Creek in Granville County, where they produced a family of ten children.

According to his tombstone, Jesse Dean died March 11, 1908. His will, which was probated in Granville County July 29, 1908, named his wife, Margaret, and his oldest son, William, as executors. They were the only family members specifically named in the will.

Margaret Dement Dean, with the help of her family, continued to operate the home place as a farm after Jesse's death. In 1923, Margaret made application and received an annual widow's pension from the state of North Carolina for the time Jesse had served in the Civil War. Margaret Dement Dean died January 28, 1926 at the age of seventy-five. She was buried next to Jesse in the Dean Cemetery located at the home place.

The children of Jesse and Margaret Dement Dean were: Elizabeth "Mollie" Dean, born about 1873, married Leonard V. Vaughan June 18, 1899; Sallie H. Dean, born September 1874; Rebecca Dean, born September 187 6, married Thomas M. Cash in Granville county on January 6, 1907, died July 17, 1908; William Dean, born April 1879; Samuel T. Dean, born April 1881, married Flora Huff; Jennie Dean, born October 1883, married John B. West in Granville County January 26, 1919, died June 25, 1936; Edward Dean, born May 1886; Daniel Dean, born September 1889; Mattie Dean, born February 1892; and Frank Dean, born June 1896.

The Jesse Dean Cemetery, a private family graveyard, was established at the home place shortly after 1900. It contains nine graves, including those of Jesse and Margaret Dement Dean.
