*************************** Letter from the rector: Dear Friends,

I was struck by someone the other day saying "Christians believe that Jesus lived 2,000 years ago".

I agree - Christians do believe that - but then I think every thinking person should also agree with that statement. There was someone called Jesus who lived and died in and around Jerusalem 2,000 years who had a profound effect on the world in which he inhabited. Of that, I don't think there is any serious debate. I think virtually every historian of that period would agree that Jesus lived and died. With a third of the world’s population being Christian, with many of our most talented artists and musicians over the centuries having been influenced by Jesus, and even our calendar being constructed from the date of Christ's birth, there can be little doubt that he has a profound effect on the world we live in today.

What is not agreed upon is who he was and what he did. Was he really the Son of God? Was he God? Did he really perform miracles? And in this season of Easter (yes we are still in the season of Easter) we should ask was he truly resurrected?

I believe that a carpenter's son who lived 2,000 years ago could never have had the effect on our world today unless he was who he said he was. Continued……...

Continued……… What do you think? Someone called Jesus did live 2,000 years ago - of that we can be sure - we need to work out who he was. Because if he was who he said he was there can be nothing more important to know in this life.

With all my best wishes,

David

ST MARY’S CHURCH BELLS RINGING REPORT

The bells will be rung on the following dates:

Sunday 3rd May: 9.15am to 10.00am

Sunday 17th May: 9.15am to 10.00am

Sunday 7th June: 9.15am to 10.00am

The 70th Anniversary of the Victory in Europe celebration (VE Day70) – Exact Anniversary 8 May

RT Hon William Hague MP has written to the Archbishop of Canterbury to highlight the opportunity for churches to pay a role in this year’s commemorations for Victory in Europe Day.

The Government and its partners will be arranging a variety of events to mark the occasion which will range from the lighting of beacons across the UK, to a service of thanksgiving and parade in central London.

The ringing of church bells has long been part of commemorating the moment in 1945 when peace broke out and brought an end to nearly six years of war and chaos across Europe. VE Day 70 is an opportunity to remember the sacrifice and sheer determination of the people who saw us through this dark period, give thanks to all those who so bravely played their part and celebrate peace and reconciliation.

St Mary’s Church, Freeland will be participating and will ring a quarter peal on Friday 8th May from 6pm until 7pm.

It is hoped a quarter peal will be rung at St Peter and St Paul’s, Church Hanborough at 11am on Saturday 9th May.

Usual practice every Monday from 7.30pm until 9pm.

FF6 takes place on Fridays from 6pm to 7pm, except where a practice falls immediately before a Saturday practice.

Open and Doubles Minor Practice will take place on the fourth Saturday from 3pm to 5pm.

Please contact the Tower Captain, Neil Ephgrave (883850) or myself should you wish to discuss any bell ringing matters.

You can see more about Freeland Bell Ringers under the “Clubs and Groups” section of the village website www.freelandoxon.co.uk

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 10 – 16th MAY 2015

There will be a house to house collection in Freeland during this week. The bright red envelopes are again being used so if you are willing to give a donation to this very worthy cause

the collectors will be calling later in the week to collect them. Thank you in advance for any offerings. This collection is usually the largest amount collected for a charity in Freeland and most years the amount raised is larger than the year before. We appreciate that some people would rather not give to this charity.

For any further information contact Janet Dalton 881742

HOMILIES ON THE HOLY SPIRIT Many have said how much they appreciated Father Martin’s series of Homilies leading up to Lent on the Church’s Moral Teaching. So during Eastertide he has been preaching a series on the Holy Spirit because it often only gets a look-in at Pentecost at the very end of the Easter season. All these Homilies and past ones can be read on his Blog. A Blog is just a personal website. Just put in www.frmartinfatman.wordpress.com

THESE ARE THE TOPICS of these HOMILIES:- The Holy Spirit and …..The Church (12th April), Knowledge and Wisdom (19th April), Healing (26th April) with Prayers for Healing at the end of Mass Speaking and Teaching (3rd May) Prayer (10th May) Love (17th May)

THIS IS THE YEAR WHEN WE CELEBRATE THE CONSECRATED LIFE and so there is a special service with all the monks and nuns and friars and religious sisters of Oxford on Saturday 30th May at 4.00pm at St Aloysius Catholic Church, Oxford. Do come if you can.

THE CHURCH SEWERS have been repaired at a cost of £10,000. That much because they stretch right across the Car Park. This is cheaper than the first estimate. Thanks to your continued generosity we are able to afford this and will just about not go into debt. The bad news is that they broke the water main doing it. The good news is that they had to replace it! So that is an extra bonus at no cost to us.

THE CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION through the streets of Oxford takes place on Sunday 7th June starting from St Aloysius Church at 2.00pm. Book the date now. Continued………...

Best Kept Garden Competition As many of you will be aware, members of the Witney Horticultural Society kindly judge this competition for us every year. They have been in touch this year to advise that many of their members are struggling to walk the distance of the whole village due to mobility problems, and have asked if I can give them a list of those properties wishing to enter this competition. So, if you would like your garden to be judged this year for the Best Kept Garden, please can you let me know by dropping me an email, letter or phone-call. You don’t need to do anything to enter, it’s free of charge and no-one will enter your property. They just look from the entrance way to your property at your front garden. Dates for the judging will follow in due course, usually in June and August. Thanks.

Contacting the Council & Date of Next Meeting: Next council meeting will be held on Monday 18th May 2015 at 7.30pm in the Newell Room. If you wish to contact the Parish Council about a particular matter and have access to the internet, please have a look at the village website where lots of useful information is held. The website can be accessed via www.freelandoxon.co.uk Alternatively, please contact me between the hours of 9.00am – 5.00pm, Monday to Friday - Lisa Smith, Parish Clerk on 01993 880067 or email [email protected]

St Mary's Sunday Afternoon Walk

St Mary's Church would like to invite you to join them for a Sunday afternoon walk on 7th June.

We will be meeting at St Mary's, Freeland at 3pm to enjoy a walk, ending at Christ Church, Hanborough at around 4.30pm for tea, coffee and cakes.

The walk is open to all. Please come along, and bring your children and dogs! There will be a scavenger hunt for children along the way.

If you would like to join us, please email Fiona ([email protected]) so that we have an idea of numbers for catering.

We look forward to seeing you. FREELAND GARDENING CLUB At the meeting on 23rd March, Janet Cropley showed slides and gave information about ‘The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring’. She had chosen more unusual ones than the bulbs, etc. we are all enjoying at the time of writing. She very sensibly had printed sheets with the names of the ones she had photographed for us to take home to remind us.

On 18th April the Club had a visit to Wisley RHS Gardens. This will be reported on next month. There is also a talk by Michael Brown entitled ‘A Monastery Garden’ in Freeland Hall on Monday 27th April at 7.30pm. We don’t yet know whether this is a present Monastery or one in the past. Whatever it is it will be interesting and maybe have some good ideas. The Club Raffle of hampers will be held at this meeting. Many thanks to those who donated items for the hampers.

‘Gardens of Japan’ is the subject of the talk by Malcolm Brownsword on Monday 18th May also in Freeland Hall at 7.30pm. As Japanese gardens differ from ours considerably it will be lovely to see pictures of these peaceful minimalist gardens which always include water, rocks and usually Acer trees. Visitors are most welcome at £3 a meeting.

The daffodils have made a lovely show throughout the village for everyone to enjoy. There are still a few areas without them so hopefully these will be added next year.

There is a day visit to Snowshill Lavender Fields and on to Hidcote Manor National Trust Garden in the afternoon on Saturday 20th June. Bookings for this trip will be taken at the May meeting. NT members get into Hidcote free with their membership cards. Visitors are very welcome.

There are the usual Plant Bring and Buy Sale at the Hall meetings.

For any further information about the Freeland Gardening Club please call consult Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd on 881420.

****************************************** FREELAND FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS

March 200 Club Winners

£20 No. 63 S. Hole £10 No. 1 S. Smart £5 No. 145 D. Alsworth

It has been a decent month on the pitch for Freeland, with the Firsts securing their safety with a 1-1 draw with Launton and a 4-1 win over Bletchingdon. Matty Longford will no doubt be looking around for a few extra faces this summer to strengthen the squad and will look to be aiming at finishing higher up the table next time around.

The Reserves defeated two Division 2 strugglers with ease, beating North Oxford 2-0 and Chalgrove 4-1. It looks like being a creditable top 5 finish for the Ressies.

The Under 11s also had a decent month, winning 2 games in handsome fashion, 3-1 over Wychwood and 7-3 over Chadlington. The only blemish was a 4-2 defeat to Carterton.

In other matters this year, there will be a slight change in format to our Annual 6-a-Side in August, with it now being a youth one instead of a men's one. This is following on from the success of our Under 11s side and also looking towards the future of adding additional youth sides to our ranks.

Matthew Hardy - Freeland Football Club Chairman

****************************************** THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS 13 people & Shep the dog made for a grand mornings 6 mile walk only to be spoilt by our small group being completely overwhelmed with trouble makers who assumed that this was an illegal Easter Egg Hunt. Can we give more details of points of interest & the route taken on these rambles? Ah, the times we’ve been asked that. Grateful thanks again to Mott Navigation Services for getting most of us back home safely. (It is only my professionalism which prevents me from mentioning the 1 mile detour we took circumnavigating the same field 2 or 3 times, allegedly to avoid the killer wild boars). Note. Any rumours of establishing a cycling club are greatly exaggerated! Next exciting event: meet at The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am, Sunday 3rd May

************************************** THE FREELAND PHOTO GROUP

At this month’s meeting, Doug Lamb gave us a talk on using the Audio Visual program 'PicturesToExe'. The group were able to get to know and understand an aspect of photography that is often overlooked, the presentation of our images. He demonstrated how the program can be used to show photographs via one’s television or projector and also how to add movement to the shots as well as music. It was clear that Doug’s lifetime involvement with music has given him a great skill in the use of music and sound within such programs.

We also found time to look at members photographs, which we find very useful as generally photographers find it difficult to get critical advice regarding their own work.

Bruce Hammersley confirmed that the Group’s Flickr site progresses well. Those wanting to view our site should search for 'Freeland Photo Group' within Flickr.

The next meeting of the Photo Group will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 19th May in the Newell Room

The Group welcomes new members. For more info, dates of meeting, etc., email [email protected]

IN MEMORY OF JOY FOWLER

After the recent loss of our Mum, Di Fisher, Trevor Fowler and families would like to say a big thank you to everyone for all your messages, cards, kind words and for attending Mum’s funeral. It really has been a great comfort and support to us at a very difficult time.

Also thank you for the help and support of Rev. David Tyler for his visits and prayers at the JR, Rev. Phil Cooke, Jackie Gardner, Margaret Stringer, the amazing voices of the Girl Guides and Jill and Ray Evans for the beautiful flowers in church. Without you all we could not have given Mum the lovely service that she would have wished for or made it so memorable, for this we are truly grateful.

*************************************** BURFORD FESTIVAL 2015 - Friday 5th to Sunday 14th June The Festival Programme is available on our website www.burfordfestival.org or in the tourist office and many shops and pubs in Burford and the surrounding villages. With around 50 events, there will be something to suit every taste.

The first weekend of the Festival starts with our Open Gardens on 6th and 7th June when 25 private gardens of Burford will open their gates. We are also very privileged to have three key guest speakers over that weekend: Baroness Rebuck (Chair of Penguin Random House UK Publishers); Mary Keen (renowned garden designer); and Deborah Warner (international opera and theatre director). The weekend is rounded off with a Baroque music chamber concert.

During the week we have a wide range of literary activities including talks from authors (including Jack Straw and “Scatty Chef” Katherine Frelon), creative writing workshops, and a Speed Book Review evening. These are supplemented by a series of talks, including an evening with Lord Hurd.

Two professional touring theatre groups will come to Burford mid-week. On Tuesday 9th June, Scary Little Girls will present a ‘Living Literature’ installation event set around Burford’s secret places, and on Wednesday 10th June the Lord Chamberlain’s Men will perform Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’.

The final weekend will feature the Corinium Players, a Cotswold-based classical guitar ensemble, our ‘Party on the Rec’ for families of all ages, a reprise of our popular evening of songs from the musicals - ‘Standing Ovation! A Celebration of the Showtune’, and a grand finale concert with the Burford Singers and Cotswold Youth Choir.

Tickets are available from the Madhatter Bookshop in Burford. More details on the website. Do join us! You will be most welcome!

Have your say on NHS services in West Oxfordshire

Saturday 6 June 2015

at Eynsham Village Hall, Back Lane

Are you happy with your NHS? Do you have some ideas to make it better? Drop in to share your views and experiences of local NHS Services at Eynsham Village Hall, on Saturday 6 June.

Come along to our stand at the Eynsham Community Day to share your views, suggestions and stories about the NHS services you have used in the Eynsham and Long Hanborough areas.

The event is being organised by the West Oxfordshire Locality Group Public and Patient Forum. This volunteer group comprises representatives of patient support organisations, and GP patient groups, as well as local, parish and district council representatives. Its aim is to be the local ‘eyes and ears’ of the Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (OCCG), which commissions our health services in Oxfordshire. Our Locality Group’s participation in the Eynsham Community Day is supported by the Eynsham Medical Group.

Roy Thomas, local event organizer, said: “This is a great opportunity to get your voice heard, and your ideas about shaping the NHS in West Oxfordshire transmitted to the Commissioners. All the comments, compliments, suggestions and stories gathered at the event will be included anonymously in a report to OCCG, and if you leave your contact details, we’ll make sure you receive a copy of the report. These days, patients really do have a voice and this is your chance to influence OCCG’s decisions about commissioning health care in Oxfordshire.”

To find out more or to get involved, contact the team organising the event at email: [email protected] or call 01993 881 001 BRIDEWELL ORGANIC GARDENS – Community Afternoon

The Walled Garden and Vineyard at Wilcote (OX7 3EB) will be open on Wednesday 13th May from 2pm to 4pm. £3, children free.

FREELAND WI

Bill Heine, Radio Oxford Broadcaster, Oxford Mail Journalist and Author entertained members and guests of Freeland WI with an account of how it took six years to gain planning permission to have a 25 foot fibreglass shark appearing to crash through the roof of his house in Headington.

The original idea had been to make an ordinary looking house extraordinary. The sculptor John Buckley had designed and built the Sharks tail, the installation caused massive interest, some favourable and some unfavourable. A six year planning battle followed, which after a public appeal, Michael Heseltine, Minister of State at the time, finally granted permission. It is interesting to see that in a silhouette of the Oxford skyline it is now possible to discern the Sharks tail in the outline.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 11th May at Freeland Garden Centre at 7.30pm when we will make either hanging baskets or tubs using either flowers or herbs. Please bring your own basket or container or they can be purchased on the night. Pimms and Strawberry Shortbread will be served. We look forward to welcoming members and guests to this event.

For further information please contact Lorraine Pengilley on 01993 881129 or [email protected] or see our website http://FreelandWI.weebly.com

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP

Due to the Easter holidays, this month’s report will be shorter than usual, but this is always a time of change. Some children move up through the sections, we say farewell to some and welcome to new faces.

I must say congratulations to Henry Berry, Lenny Morgan, Samuel Eaton, Zack Neville & Arthur Quartermain who all achieved their Chief Scout Bronze Award last month as they now move from Beavers up to Cubs. I also want to thank Victoria Eaton for all her support and creative cooking skills over the past few years as she steps down as Beaver leader, and we welcome Robbie Hughes who joins the Beaver leader team.

As I’ve said in previous reports, we are always looking for more help to run all of our scouting sections, whether as a leader or casual support. If you feel you can get involved, please contact our Group Section Leader, Adam Griffiths by emailing him on [email protected]

Please also have a look at the ‘Join the Adventure’ page of the scouting website at http://scouts.org.uk/get-involved

At the time of going to press, the next big event for the group is the St. George’s Day Parade and Service on Sunday 26th April in Witney. This year, 1st Hanborough Freeland Scout Group have been chosen to bear the union flag.

FREELAND MEN’S NET

The fourth meeting of the Net was held on Monday 6th April in the Methodist Chapel. Those attending greatly enjoyed a presentation from Martin Shann on “King Kong – why cinema loves apes”. Martin is an experienced speaker with extensive experience in the field of film animation and was able to link the evolution of cinematic animation to everything from the discovery of dinosaurs to the great Piltdown Man hoax whilst showing some highly entertaining early footage.

There was further discussion concerning dates and topics for future meetings. Newcomers are always extremely welcome and the next meeting is scheduled for Monday 1st June at 7.30pm, again in the Methodist Chapel.

Over 150 bags of recycled compost will be given away by West Oxfordshire District Council at The Leys, Witney on Friday 1st May from 11am until 2pm.

The compost will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis and residents can take up to three bags home to use on their gardens.

Last year the District Council collected over 10,000 tonnes of garden waste from homes across West Oxfordshire. This is processed at a composting site near Chipping Norton by Agrivert Ltd (which is supplying the compost for the giveaway).

Along with free compost, recycling officers will be offering residents free: food waste bins and caddies kitchen caddy liners recycling box nets ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ recipe books

Discounted home composting bins will also be available to purchase for half price, at a cost of just £10.

Around a third of many household rubbish bins is usually organic waste - diverting food and garden waste from landfill means less pollution and fewer harmful greenhouse gases from rotting waste.

“Home composting is still the cheapest and most environmentally friendly way to deal with garden waste and food waste, such as peelings, as it requires no transport or processing” explained Sian Stokes, Waste and Recycling Officer for the District Council.

“Composting is simple to do and the end result will bring many benefits to your garden – improving your soil and helping to cut plant disease. As well as selling discounted home compost bins at the giveaway, our experts will also be on hand to answer any questions."

A full list of items that can go in garden waste bins, and other recycling/waste bins, is available at www.westoxon.gov.uk/bins or by calling 01993 861000. People can also register for free green waste collections online or by calling this number.

WHO’S WHO AT COMBE MILL www.combemill.org Tony Simmons (left) first visited in 2003, created the website in 2006 and is now Chair of this Grade II listed building preserved through substantial lottery funding.

He is proud that the Mill provides a complete experience, being much greater than the sum of its machinery and building parts. There are often 10 to 15 Mill experts working on open days (every Wednesday and Sunday) with a steady stream of visitors.

Richard Newman (right) from Bicester, wanted an outlet for his lifetime skills, acquired helping his Farrier Dad, as an electrical engineer and through various hobbies: classic tractors, wood turning and visiting any Mill that will have him! He loves the banter with other Mill experts - putting the engineering world to rights!

I am amazed how the team come up with so many new ideas to interest and motivate everyone involved.

Check out our website at www.combemill.org if these gentlemen have inspired you to join us. There are also lots of non-engineering activities to try your hand at.

FREELAND CRAFT CLUB

We've welcomed another new member (and her husband) into the group last month and hope they are enjoying their time with us. We've been working on "square" stitch this time, turning the result into pin cushions and again it is remarkable to see the variety of final products - in the choice of patterns and colours. Now what next?... come along and try for yourself. It is a great chance to see what other people have made, to find some new patterns and along the way make some new friends. Don't be shy about coming along – we are a friendly group where you'll find a warm welcome.

NEXT MEETINGS: Freeland Methodist Chapel - 2pm to 4pm Weds: May 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th, June 3rd & 10th

It costs £1 per session to cover heating, lighting and refreshments.

For further information (or for someone to go with) please contact: Margaret Wright: 01993 881316 or Helen Molden: 01993 882305
