Care and Support at Home – Lifestyle factors and Dementia

The news this morning revealed the result of yet another study showing the steady rise of people who are overweight or obese within the general UK population and the risks to our health. When asked if they were overweight, most people who participated in the study stated they were not.In the same way that what we eat not only contributes to our weight but has a direct impact on our health, a recent study published by Age UK reveals that lifestyle is responsible for up to 76% of changes in the ageing brain and in addition, that key lifestyle changes have the potential to reduce the risk of developing dementia by as much as 36%.Given the latest estimates showing that dementia aff ects one in three people over the age of 65, it is vital to understand the key lifestyle changes which might have a positive eff ect and reduce the risk of developing dementia and / or slowing its development. Th e key lifestyle changes the study refers to include; • Regular physical exercise• A Mediterranean diet• Not smoking• Drinking alcohol in moderation• Preventing and treating diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity

Physical exercise, such as aerobic, resistance or balance activity, was found to be the most eff ective way to ward off cognitive decline in healthy older peo-ple and to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (the most common form of dementia).

At Home Instead our CAREGivers are trained to encourage the people they support to exercise. Th is does not mean running a marathon but walking with them to the local shops, going for a swim or even, where mobility is reduced, chair based exercises. Th is will have a positive eff ect on health and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s or slow down the progress of the disease. Our Alzheimer’s training, developed with the help of many specialists and researchers and based on the experience and know-how of over 1,200 offi ces, clearly states that lifestyle does matter and the information from Age UK supports this. It is important to note however that the precise cause or causes of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is not known. Nevertheless, most experts agree that Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, like other chronic diseases, probably de-velop as a result of multiple factors, rather than from a single cause.Looking aft er ourselves by exercising, eat-ing a balanced diet and doing away with too much alcohol is not a guarantee to prevent the condition but it will certainly have a positive eff ect.

• Suggest that they sprinkle their clothes with water regularly, and splash cool water on their face and the back of their neck. A damp cloth on the back of the neck helps temperature regulation.• Recommend cold food, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content• Advise to drink regularly, preferably water or fruit juice but avoid alcohol and caff eine (tea, coff ee))• Keep some cold water in the fridge. If you are visiting somebody, put some water in the fridge when you arrive and leave it within reach when you leave

I trust that this advice will help you and anybody you look aft er or care for stay cool and healthy during a hot spell.

Eat and drink hot food and beverages regularly. Th ey provide both warmth and energy at releatively little cost.Wear the most appropriate clothes this winter. Wear several thin layers rather than just one thick one - and make sure you always put on an extra layer when you venture outside.Wrap up warm in bed. Just because you're in bed does not mean you don't have to worry about what you are wearing. Wear warm bed garments and if you can invest in a duvet with a higher tog rating.Make sure your home is the right temperature. Somewhere between 21C and 24C (70-75F) is just right. Any lower and you'll be too cold but any higher and you'll be wasting money.Insulation in your home can really help to keep the heat in as well as keeping costs down. Hang thick curtains up over doors and windows and speak to consider getting your loft s and cavities insulated or if you can aff ord it get doubled glazing installed.Close your windows. It may sound obvious but a lot of people like to have a bit of fresh air in their home but it lets cold air in, hot air out and makes the heating work even harder to try and warm your home - driving up costs.Shut the doors to any rooms that you don't use. Th e closed door makes that room another barrier between you and the cold weather outside. It also stops air from circulating as much, which reduces heat loss.Keep moving as much as possible. Moving and doing light exercise - even just the vacuuming - gets the blood pumping and warms the body up.Cuddle up to a loved one or a pet. People and animals such as dogs and cats are warm-blooded mammals so why not use each other's heat to keep the cold at bay?Use a hot water bottle. It doesn't have to be just for bed time. Hot water bottles are a quick, easy and cheap way of warming yourself up.A er you've cooked your dinner, leave the oven door open to let heat escape and help warm up your home.Take a hot shower or bath and use oil or lotion on your skin when you get out, which can be like an extra layer of clothing.Ask your energy provider if they have any special rates for pensioners and check to see if you qualify for benefi ts to help pay for the extra heating. For a benefi ts check over the phone, call SeniorLine on 0808 800 6565 and for Pension Credit, contact Th e Pension Service on 0800 99 1234.

Help your neighbours in winterCheck on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they’re safe and well. Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather. If you’re worried about a relative or an elderly neighbour, contact your local council or ring the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66.

Cold weather bene tsYou may also be able to claim fi nancial and practical help with heating your home. Grants available include the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payment.

Winter Fuel PaymentA Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 is available if you were born on or before July 5 1952.

Cold Weather PaymentCold Weather Payment may be available to you if you receive certain benefi ts. Payments are made when your local temperature is either recorded as, or forecast to be, an average of 0C or below over seven consecutive days. You’ll get a payment of £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1 2014 and March 31 2015.

One  of  The  Best  Decisions  I  Have  Ever  Made

As  Christmas  passes  and  you  find  you  have  more  items  than  ever  to  store  away,  perhaps  now  is  the  time  to  consider  making  changes  to  your  storage  issues.    With  many  Home  Improvement  magazines  highlighting  the  importance  of  maximising  your  storage  and  space  in  your  bedrooms,  now  is  the  perfect  time  to  create  both  a  relaxing  and  beautiful  bedroom,  whilst  getting  the  best  form  your  home  with  storage  solutions  designed  with  you  in  mind.

As  the  New  Year  begins  now  is  a  great  time  to  consider  your  options,  with  companies  now  able  to  make  bespoke  bedroom  furniture  in  every  style  and  colour  possible.    Even  the  most  discerning  of  customers  will  be  able  to  find  the  perfect  furniture  for  their  bedroom,  hall,  storage  or  kitchen  areas.

If  like  me  you  never  seem  to  have  enough  space  in  your  wardrobe,  then  fitted  bedroom  furniture  is  most  definitely  the  dream  solution.    On  a  recent  visit  to  STAR  Bedrooms  in  Derbyshire,  I  was  impressed  by  the  range  and  styles  available,  this  is  the  largest  showroom  in  Derby  with  displays  of  every  imaginable  design  available  to  look  at,  and  see  the  high  quality  workmanship  of  the  company.

I  was  able  to  get  great  ideas  for  my  bedroom  with  the  choice  of  Sliding  Doors  with  Mirror  finishes  to  bring  extra  light  in  to  you  room,  to  the  Natural  Oak  Finishes  that  are  classical  and  will  look  beautiful  for  years  to  come,  I  really  was  spoilt  for  quality  and  choice.

So  I  took  the  next  step  and  made  an  appointment  for  someone  to  come  out  and  visit  me,  there  was  no  pressure  selling  to  my  relief  and  Shaun  the  Designer  who  came  out  was  fantastic,  he  listened  to  my  needs  and  then  designed  a  bedroom  image  just  the  way  I  had  visualised  it.    He  went  through  all  the  different  options  available  for  inside  my  wardrobes  as  well  as  outside  and  it  was  a  really  enjoyable  experience.    It  was  very  satisfying  that  somebody  could  take  my  ideas  and  make  them  into  a  reality  for  me  to  look  at.

I  was  impressed  with  the  designers  knowledge  with  over  25  years  experience  he  was  able  to  give  me  some  great  ideas  to  save  space,  a  built  in  linen  cupboard  in  one  wardrobe,  drawers  inside  another  and  even  shelves  at  the  bottom  for  all  those  shoes  of  mine.    Nothing  was  too  much  trouble  and  he  even  put  my  TV  bracket  on  the  wall  for  me,  another  great  space  saving  idea  we  discussed.

STAR  Bedrooms  have  lots  of  great  offers  on  at  the  moment,  my  room  was  completed  in  a  couple  of  days  and  they  even  gave  me  a  new  carpet  for  FREE.    It  was  like  having  a  beautiful  new  bedroom  without  any  of  the  stress.    I  can’t  promise  to  stop  buying  clothes  and  shoes  but  at  least  now  i  have  the  wardrobe  space  to  put  them  in,  and  when  I  close  my  wardrobe  doors  my  bedroom  looks  stunning  and  feels  so  spacious,  calm  and  relaxing,  just  the  way  it  should.    I  would  recommend  Star  Bedrooms  to  everyone,  visit  their  website  or  even  better  pop  down  to  the  showroom,  I  promise  you  won’t  be  disappointed.

Walter Richard Parker VC (20 September 1881 – 27 November 1936) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire but died in Stapleford, Nottingham.

Parker was 33 years old, and a Lance-Corporal in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Royal Marines, Royal Naval Division during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On the night of 30 April/1 May 1915 at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli, Turkey, Lance-Corporal Parker, a volunteer stretcher-bearer, went out with a party of NCOs and men to take ammunition, water and medical stores to an isolated trench containing about 40 men and several wounded. Th ere were no communication trenches leading to the trench, and several men had already been killed in an attempt to reach it.Aft er crossing an area of about 400 yards swept by machine-gun and rifl e fi re, Lance-Corporal Parker was alone, the rest of the party having been killed or wounded. On his arrival he gave assistance to the wounded and when the trench was fi nally evacuated early the next morning, he helped to remove and attend the casualties, although he himself was seriously wounded.

Aft er crossing an area of about 400 yards swept by machine-gun and rifl e fi re, Lance-Corporal Parker was alone, the rest of the party having been killed or wounded. On his arrival he gave assistance to the wounded and when the trench was fi nally evacuated early the next morning, he helped to remove and attend the casualties, although he himself was seriously wounded.Parker never fully recovered from his wounds, and was invalided out of the service in June 1916. Th e award appeared in the London Gazette on 22 June 1917; the lengthy delay before the award being explained by the Commanding Offi cer, Adjutant, Sergeant Major and the Company Commander all being wounded at the time of the action for which Parker was awarded the medal. Th e account of the award also noted that Parker had consistently displayed bravery and energy in the three previous days during a particularly diffi cult time ascommander the battalion’s stretcher bearers, when almost every wounded man had to be evacuated over open ground and under fi re.

He died, aged 55, at Stapleford near Nottingham and is buried in the local cemetery. A memorial service to him is held annually at Stapleford by the local Royal Marines Association on the Sunday nearest 30th April. Th ere is a paved area in Stapleford town centre named in his honour.

His Victoria Cross medal is displayed at the Royal Marines Museum, in Southsea, England.

Grapevine Tips

Left over tea and tea bags? You can use left over tea to marinade meat before cooking and even add used tea leaves to compost to help grow your plants. Tea can also eff ectively remove grease and grime on mirrors and fl oors so use an old bag to make a cold brew, then use it as a cleaning solution. Remember to recycle your used tea bags either at home in the compost bin or in your council food waste collection. Never put them in the rubbish bin. But before you recycle it try using a tea bag on closed eyes to soothe and make your skin fresh and smooth!

If you have over salted soup, add unsalted liquid to dilute it or toss in a peeled, quartered potato for 15 minutes. Over-salted sauces can oft en be helped with the addition of a little cream, brown sugar or vinegar. Use your judgement depending on the sauce, using a little at a time and tasting all the way. A bit of unsalted, cooked white rice pureed with unsalted water or broth to a thin paste can also help cure over salted soups or stews.

LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TARTAlternative Ideas for Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and like any meal can easily run out of ideas and bored with the usual cereals, toast, etc.For the weekend when time is on our side, it’s sometime nice to make a breakfast that’s both nutritious and diff erent, more healthy than the tradtional Sunday fry up!

It doesn’t get much easier or more nutritious than a veggie-fi lled frittata. Th is one is packed with onions, garlic, spinach and mushrooms, and requires only 5 minutes of prep and 15 minutes in the oven. Th e combination of whole eggs and egg whites makes for a lighter frittata, but if you want to cut back on the fat even more, use a little less cheese, or a choose a light or low-fat feta. Don’t skip the cheese altogether though — it adds a wonderfully tangy and creamy element to the frittata, not to mention a hit of calcium.

Spinach & Mushroom Frittata

INGREDIENTS1 tbsp olive oil1 cup of mushrooms, cleaned and sliced½ small white onion, chopped1 clove fresh garlic, minced2 cups of spinach, washed and dried3 cup feta cheese cubes4 eggs2 egg whitesINSTRUCTIONSPre-heat your oven to 350 degrees F.Place the mushrooms in a microwave safe bowl with a teaspoon of water and microwave on high for 2-3 minutes, until they have shrunk and soft ened up. Drain the water and place to the side.Fry the onions and garlic in a cast iron skillet (or an oven proof skillet of any kind) until translucent and soft . Add in the spinach and cook until wilted.Whisk together the eggs and egg whites until combined then mix in the mushrooms. Pour over the onion mixture in the skillet.Crumble the cubes of feta over the top. (I like to leave some whole as well, I love feta!)Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, until the eggs are completely cooked in the centre of the skillet.

Job hunting? e rst thing to look at is your CV.

Your CV is the introduction to your outstanding range of skills and your fi rst chance to impress an employer or recruiter.A good CV needs to outline your skills and suitability for a role On average, recruiters spend just eight seconds scanning a CV to see whether or not you're the one they are looking to employ. So make sure all the key information is upfront.

1. Tailor your CVMake sure you tailor your CV for every job you apply for. Read the job description and required skill set and ensure you list your key skils and experience fi rst. Recruiters are faced with multiple CVs for every job they advertise. By making sure you have all of the key skills required for the role you'll immediately save them a whole lot of time and eff ort and ensure your CV goes to the top of the pile.2. Keep it clear and conciseYour CV should ideally be no longer than two pages of A4. Employers need to know about your skills and previous work experience so they can assess your suitability for the job on off er, but they have many CVs to read through in a day and won't be impressed with a long & detailed six-page history that includes your time doing irrelevant things etc.Rather than writing long paragraphs about time spent in a spe-cifi c role, bullet point key bits of information. Address all of the key skills required in the job description but remember that your CV is only the fi rst step. Save the detailed explanation of your suitability for the role for your job interview. 3. Don’t leave gaps or miss out informationLeaving gaps in your career history just makes recruiters and prospective employers wonder what you were up to during that time. List any gaps in your career with a suit-able explanation – whether it was a career break, travelling or having time to care for family etc.If you undertook any additional training during this period, make sure it’s listed alongside any other activity you undertook which may have helped develop other transferable skills such as communication, team work or project management.

4. Remove the errors and check spelling. One of the main reasons for CV rejection is errors and spelling mistakes. Always check your CV for basic spelling mistakes and grammatical errors – don’t just use your spellchecker, get a friend or relative to proof read your CV as well.5. Tell the truthAlways tell the truth about your skills and experience. If you don’t, you'll be caught out at some point – whether it’s during the interview process or, far worse, when you've actually got the job. Most companies will check the facts you've stated like qualifi cations and previous employment history, but this also includes hobbies or interests you've listed.

More tipsOnce your CV is sent ....Be prepared. Have a voice mail system in place and sign-up for a professional sounding emailaddress. Consider getting a separate email account to use for your job search, so you can stay organized. Put your mobile phone number on your CV so you can follow up in a timely manner. Always have an up-to-date CV ready to send - even if you are not currently looking for work. You never know when an opportunity that is too good to pass up might come along. If you’re not on LinkedIn yet, create a LinkedIn Profi le and start making connections who can help you job search.Don’t Wait. If you are laid-off , fi le for unemployment benefi ts right away. You will most likely be able to fi le online or by phone. Waiting could delay your benefi ts check.Get Help. Utilize free or inexpensive services that provide career counseling and job search assistance such as college career offi ces, or your local public library. Many libraries provide workshops, programs, classes, computers and printers you can use, and other resources to help you with your job search. Create Your Own Templates. Have copies of your resume and cover letter ready to edit. Th at way you can change the content to match the requirements of the job you’re applying for, but, the contact information and your opening and closing paragraphs won’t need to be changed. Microsoft Word users can download free templates for resumes, cover letters and email messages which can be personalized for your own correspondence. Jobs by Email. Let the jobs come to you. Use job alerts to sign up and receive job listings by email. All the major job sites have search agents and some websites and apps specialize in sending announcements.References Ready. Have a list of three references including name, job title, company, phone number and email address ready to give to interviewers. Print a copy of your reference list and bring it with you to interviews.

Flora Lively Investigates – Murder at the Maples by Joanne Phillips

This is (hopefully) just the fi rst book in a new detective series. Flora Lively is the owner of a removal fi rm, inherited from her father. Times are hard and a new national fi rm are moving into the town, so keeping their only client The Maples happy becomes very important. However, all at The Maples retirement home is not as it seems and Flora becomes embroiled in a series of sinister and strange events. The story manages to move between the various unsatisfactory relationships that Flora has with ease and the large number of characters is developed with skill, the story moves along quickly and is a very easy read. Flora is a very likeable character and the other characters are well formed and easy to imagine, it would translate well to a Sunday night family drama. The outcomes are not especially surprising but sometimes it’s nice to read a book that isn’t shocking, has no bad language and no sex. Joanne Phillips has written two other family dramas, you might enjoy Can’t Live Without and its sequel The Family Trap.

Christopher Nibble by Charlotte LivelyCHILDREN’S CHOICE

This is an enchanting character, a guinea pig faced with the extinction of dandelions… but Christopher happens across a seed and has to decide whether to keep it for himself (he really loves dandelions) or share it with his local community. It’s a lovely tale, with beautiful illustrations, about caring for others, sharing and gardening.

There are another two adventures, and hopefully more to come, Christopher’s Catapillars and Christopher’s Bicycle.

Local Broxtowe Green Party Candidate Pledges Support for Local Pubs and Brewers

David Kirwan, local Green Party General Election candidate for Broxtowe has pledged to support local pubs and breweries. Th e three pledges are highlighted in the Manifesto for Pubs and Real Ale by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, which sets out a package of reforms they are seeking from the next Government. Th ese important pledges are to:

• Support well-run community pubs• Promote Britain’s breweries• Represent pub goers and beer drinkers.

Tim Page, CAMRA’s Chief Executive welcomed David’s support, saying:“We are delighted that David Kirwan has pledged his support for pubs, breweries and consumers. As, on average, 31 pubs close each week it is absolutely vital that our elected representatives recognise and champion the value of these important community assets, and work to protect them. “CAMRA is urging the next Government to act to ensure that pubs are better protected in the planning system, that large pub companies treat their licensees fairly and that beer duty is set at a level which supports UK brewing.”

David Kirwan added:“I am proud to be speaking up for pubs and real ale. Well-run community pubs play a crucial role in local life and make a huge contribution to the local economy – with each injecting around £80,000 to the local area every year.If elected, I will continue to show my support in Parliament.”

CAMRA is a consumer group with over 165,000 members and acts as the independent voice for real ale drinkers and pub goers. CAMRA’s vision is to have quality real ale and thriving pubs in every community.CAMRA’s Manifesto for Pubs and Real Ale is available at http://fi les.camra.org.uk/Camra%20Manifesto.pdf. Over 230 election candidates (including sitting MPs who are restanding) have signed up to these pledges. For a full list please contact CAMRA – [email protected]

Tour of the Council HouseNottingham Council House on Old Market Square is the most iconic building in the City, second only perhaps to the Castle. It has been ‘the heart of the City’ for over 80 years and the splendour of its wonderful art-deco interior has many an interesting tale to tell. It is not a muse-um but a living, working building. You can now enjoy FREE guided tours of the building every Sunday morning (except on Bank Holiday weekends) and selected Wednesday evenings. Find out why part of what is now the Council House ran with blood for centuries; who was the ‘lady’ that has welcomed visitors for more than 80 years; and what is the ‘secret’ that helps sound-proof the Council Chamber? Th is is a fascinating part of Nottingham’s heritage and is a ‘must’ for locals and visitors alike – and is completely free! Group tours welcome by arrangement. MOROCCAN STYLE CHICKEN STEWRecipe by Lyndon Gee

Moroccan style chicken stew This deliciously thick stew can be varied depending on what you have in the fridge. It’s good served with cous cous, rice, baked potatoes or warm pita bread and salad. It’s also really tasty cold the next day served in a wrap.

Chef’s tip from LyndonTo make this dish feed 2 more people, cut the chicken smaller and add another 200g of vegetables and a drained 400g tin of chickpeas.

Use up You could also use leftover roast chicken instead of raw chicken, or add any raw or cooked vegetables that need using up.

VariationsCan use beef or pork and is very good with lamb but depending on the cut may need to cook for longer to make it tender, so check with your butcher or read the label.

Extra flavourAdd chilli if you like it spicy. Add loads of garlic or fresh coriander, parsley or mint. You can also double the amount of cumin and cinnamon or add smoked paprika.

Freezer adviceFor best results, cool down quickly

(ideally within an hour), divide into portions, place in an airtight container, label and then pop in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge, ideally overnight, and use within 24 hours after defrosting. Reheat in microwave or in a saucepan on the hob, heating thoroughly until piping hot.

Vegetarian and vegan optionsFor a veggie version use butternut squash,

pumpkin or sweet potato rather than chicken. Or just add a 500g mixture of different vegetables.

Allergy adviceCan be made with vegetable or chicken stock

instead of tomatoes and served with quinoa.

Love Food Hate Waste - Tips to save money!

Get familiar with your fridge and friendly with your freezerStart saving money right now by making a date with your fridge! Just by opening the fridge door and checking the ‘use by’ dates on what’s inside, you can begin saving your pennies and pounds. How oft en do you fi nd that the ‘use by’ date on a packet of ham or bag of sausages has been and gone and you end up throwing it away? Meat, fi sh and ready meals are oft en the most expensive things we buy, so it helps to get into the habit of regularly checking the dates on perishable items in your fridge. Move them into the freezer if you don’t think you’ll have time to eat them or cook them for tonight’s supper. Dairy products are oft en forgotten at the back of the fridge. Grate odd bits of cheddar and mix with breadcrumbs for a savoury topping or stir into mashed potatoes. Use up your yoghurts in fruit smoothies or as delicious toppings on breakfast cereals. Th e kids will love them. When you get home with your shopping, it is a good idea to transfer as much as you can straight into the freezer. If you have large packets of chicken pieces or fi sh, divide them up and freeze individual portions.Understanding food dates and what the ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ labels really mean is key to making the most of your fridge and freezer. Check out the facts about food dates and visit our fridge & freezer sections to learn more about getting your money’s worth.

Storecupboard SavvyTry and keep your storecupboard and freezer well-stocked with a variety of canned, dried and frozen goods that you know your family love to eat. Tinned beans, frozen vegetables, meat and fi sh and dried fruit, nuts, pasta & noodles, rice & grains, are all essentials with a long shelf life - meaning you will always have the ingredients standing by to pull together a delicious meal or to jazz up your left overs.Th e trick is to replace items once you have used them up. It helps to keep a note stuck on the inside of the cupboard door - scribble down items as soon as you have fi nished them and check it when you write your shopping list.

Use your storecupboard to create meals from left overs. Any spare fresh tomatoes could be added to some canned ones to make a great topping for pizza. Rice would turn left -over chicken and wrinkly peppers into a delicious summer salad. Add a tin of lentils to your minced meat to make it stretch further.

It pays to plan!Planning your meals is one of the most eff ective ways you can cut wastage and food bills. Start by checking your fridge, freezer and store cupboard, and before you go shop-ping, write a list, so you don’t shop for things you already have. Get the kids to help and to suggest what meals they’d like to have that week. Th en you can work out a weekly meal plan.Lovely le oversIt’s amazing how many meals you can get from one chicken! If you enjoy a roast on Sunday, the remains of the joint would make a great curry or a delicious risotto later in the week and you’ll always fi nd enough for a sandwich. If you have time, the carcass ccan also be boiled up for stock and soups. If you have some dinner left in the pan, bag it and pop it in the freezer as a ‘ready meal’ or one. Even the smallest amount could be pureed up for the baby or served as a kid’s portion for lunch the next day. Crusts and stale bread can be blitzed in the food processor to make breadcrumbs which can be stored in the freezer. Th e same can be done with cake or biscuits and used as a topping for crumbles and puddings. Th e last dregs of wine or beer can be frozen in ice cube trays and popped out into stews and casseroles hen cooking. Cut the bruises off old apples and toss into the pan with your sausages. Don’t throw out those black bananas - mash them up and add cream for a super-quick pudding the children will love.Being craft y with your food is the clever way to save those pennies – and it really just means thinking before you throw. With a little bit of thought, you can create some delicious surprises from your left overs - they don’t have to mean second best.
