UCA Graduate Show 2013Students and tutors teamed up this summer to organize an open design event, which showcased the work of Graphic Design and Graphic Design New Media graduates.

The show was about collaboration, new design practices and innovative thinking. I was part of the web team of GDNM but later on got involved in other aspects of the organization, such as branding the show, curating the exhibition and helping to build all displays. It was a chal-lenging experience but also really fun and social.

Rich dark blue colors dominated the GDNM branding because we wanted the course to be perceived as bold, tech savvy, with confident students, but not too serious or dull. The course also attracts more male students due to its emphasis on coding and motion graphics.

GDNM presented its students’ work through a one of a kind custom built interactive system that caused a lot of positive buzz from the visitors. It was a truly unique approach to showcasing projects.

I was directly involved in the following work...

Sound reactive typography

Letters made of illustrations which respond to sound. The words change size and appearance based on the volume of the sound input. The louder it is the big-ger the letters. Built in Processing, the application is sensitive to voices, music and ambient noises.

The possible outcomes are endless since any svg files can be attached to any font and then programmed to change size. When the illustrations become bigger they overlap and create very interesting patterns.

This typographic technique can be used for posters, interactive projects at exhibitions or events and even as a learning tool for studying languages in a more engaging visual way DEMO VIDEO: www.vimeo.com/64978437

Moschino Chic Petals PerfumeTV Ad

Chic Petals is the latest Moschino perfume from the Cheap&Chic label. The concept for the ad was to use the words Fresh, Floral, Fruity and Chic in a vibrant positive way. A way that best reflects the perfume as a bright floral - fruity explosion of intense flavours. Hence why, the visuals are based on research about the perfume’s scent and it’s composition.

The inception for the video came from LOVEmagazine’s website intro with Minnie Mouse.

The perfume’s compositions, developed by per-fumer Guillaume Flavigny, emphasize fruity juices of pomegranate and wild strawberry, combined with red ginger, red orchid petals, gardenia and water lily with a sensual trail of musk, hinoki wood and Italian iris.

One of the biggest challenges was to keep the effects and colour palette consistent, as well as complying with the original ad. The logo had to be designed from scratch, which seemed impossible before discovering the font used for ‘Chic Petals’.

bacteria: interactive screenmoma exhibition

The project is an application built in Processing (open source programming language) for Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition, an event which cherished the collaboration between scientists and art workers.

The interactive screen is supposed to communicate the idea of movement, connection, development and growth. Aesthetically, it resembles bacteria growing in a Petri dish, which explains the colour scheme. However, the design is open to interpre-tation.

Pink Sheep/Alexander McQueenWeb Design and Development

This project was a collaboration between me and a fashion journalism graduate. The idea was to create a website that would complement the magazine about Alexander McQueen, which the girl was writing and preparing for her final major project. I was in charge of the whole project from start till end, working only with the girl and designing/coding the website myself.

Photo Manipulation With3D SoftwareImage 1:

The photo was shattered into pieces in Cinema 4D Studio and then edited in Photoshop. The idea was to experiment with striking visual techniques, which could potentially be implemented in commercials and photo shoots for various products.

Image 2:

Again, mixing photography and 3D. The shapes cov-ering the woman were positioned to go in and out of the image (on the z axis) so that shadows could ap-pear after adding lights to the project. Consequently, the shadows gave those shapes their more realistic organic effect.

The website features projects across various media, a lot of images and detailed descriptions. I hope you enjoy the diversity of techniques and tools being used.
