T he Comics Laureate - yes, there is such a thing. Those of you unfamiliar with

the term might wonder what that is? Well, like any other “Laureate” in the UK [poet/children’s etc] it’s a role set up primarily to promote the subject’s chosen fi eld. I was lucky and honoured to be asked to be the second Comic’s Laureate last year [Dave Gibbons was the inaugural recipient, and did a magnifi cent fi rst tenure] and I’ll hold that position until February next year - a two year post.

So far in my time as Laureate, I’ve talked to teachers, librarians, and schools, and visited many different places in the UK and, for the fi rst time, took the post overseas with visits to Toronto and Amiens [France] last year and we’re off to Helsinki and Tokyo this year.

My role primarily is to preach to the non-converted. So most appearances at comic con’s and festivals are as Charlie Adlard - artist, not Charlie Adlard - Laureate. It’s been very satisfying to step out of my comfort zone and talk to non-comics folk, especially about using comics in education. It’s also been surprising how many teachers and librarians have been open to using comics within their curriculum and workplace.

If we’re talking education, comics are a great way of encouraging children AND adults to read. They’re an incredible tool for helping foster a genuine love for the written word. It’s interesting to note that in Japan and Finland, where comics are read by more people per head of population, have some of the highest literacy rates in the world.

Jonathan Hennessey once said, “It strikes me as supremely odd that high culture venerates the written word on the one hand, and the fi ne visual arts on the other. Yet somehow putting the two together is dismissed as juvenilia. Why is that? Why can’t these forms of art go together like music and dance?’ I think that sums it up... Comics are the perfect fusion of the visual and the prose - a perfect 50/50 combination

of both, where readers are not just passively reading

text, they’re interacting with both that and the imagery. In fact it may be superior to plain text, as an educational tool, because readers use what we call a dual code to decipher the text/art and therefore it’s proposed that they improve their memory and comprehension of the material.

One of the main reasons I accepted the role as well, was a more personal one. My eldest son [who’s now 16] is Dyslexic. The only things he’s willingly read without any persuasion are comics. He’s not a comic fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it was amazing to see him read something without us nagging him and a medium - and remember comics are a medium NOT a genre - which I so love... and, yes, he’s read all of The Walking Dead!

From his point of view, the comics page is instantly non-threatening [no great walls of plain text] and it gave him a sense of achievement too - he fi nished the comics, something he never did with novels. His confi dence was boosted ten-fold.

I’m really enjoying my time as the Laureate. If I’ve convinced a few people along the way that comics aren’t just what they think they might be - either something just for “kids”, or a very niche superhero thing that only a few fan boys can understand, or a 40-something nostalgia-fest, or something where the “graphic novel” is the only legitimate form of sequential art - that they’re for EVERYONE, young or old, 6 to 96 - then I’ve succeeded.
