What is the Great Lakes Regional Training Initiative?
The basics
section 01
The Great Lakes Regional Training
Initiative (GLRTI) is an effort by Economic
Development Agency (EDA) University
Centers (UCs) in the states of Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and
Wisconsin.
These UCs work together to respond to the
training and technical assistance needs of
regional stakeholders across the six states.
These states are officially aligned with the EDA
Chicago Regional Office, the key funder of this
collaborative. This training initiative was officially
launched in the fall of 2013.

What are Economic Development Agency (EDA) University Centers (UCs)?
The basics
section 01
Universities contain and have access to numerous
developmental, educational and technology-based resources.
EDA UCs direct these resources towards distressed regional
communities.
Each university deemed a University Center by the EDA must devote a large
percentage of their funding towards assisting organizations within
economically distressed regions.
The UCs in the Great Lakes region have come together to form the GLRTC.
EDA UCs provide
economic
development
resources to
regional economic
ecosystems
and innovation
clusters.

Why is the initiative needed?
The basics
section 01
Local, regional and state leaders need
access to timely information and sound,
evidenced-based strategies to guide them in
their efforts to build strong vibrant regions.
The EDA UCs located in the six Great Lakes states
are critical conduits for supporting and guiding the
efforts of regional leaders.
While these centers have supported the work of
existing and emerging regions, no single UC has
the breadth and depth of programs, resources and
technical assistance capabilities sufficient to
respond to the diverse and changing needs of
these regions.Great Lakes region UC locations

What is the purpose of the initiative?
The basics
section 01
The purpose of the GLRTI is to build on the
UCs’ unique assets for the purpose of

Establishment of a regional advisory board
Core activities
section 02
The GLRTI has
established
a 12-person
advisory board
in order to guide
the focus of their
training activities.
Two representatives from each of
the six states are invited to serve
on the GLRTI advisory board. In
addition, a representative of the
Chicago EDA Regional Office
serves as an ex officio member on
the board.
The advisory board meets with
members of the GLRTI via
conference call on a quarterly
basis and face-to-face one time
per year.

Identification of training and technical assistance needs
Core activities
section 02
The GLRTI continually gathers input from a variety
of individuals on the training and technical
assistance needs of local and regional groups in
the Great Lakes area.
This information is collected, synthesized and
analyzed by the GLRTI UCs and advisory board.
Implementation of training and
technical assistance activities
will begin in early 2015.
11
Strengthening of communication activities with constituentsTwo valuable communication activities are being launched as part of the GLRTI.
Core activities
section 02
PCRD is developing a GLRTI website that will:
Highlight upcoming workshops and webinars in
each state
Offer archived versions of presentations,
programs and other products developed by the
UCs
Provide information on opportunities provided
by relevant federal agencies, think tanks,
foundations and others
Purdue Center for Regional Development
(PCRD) is also working on the development
and distribution of a quarterly GLRTI
newsletter that will keep stakeholders
informed about:
Programs and workshops of the UCs in the
GLRTI
Important reports and research articles
produced by the UCs or other relevant entities
