The curiously under-reported Great Wall Cup, which

wrapped up in Beijing recently was a triumph for Chinese

soccer, said its organizers. Dawn Du, marketing chief at

China Sports Tours (CST) said the July 25-31

tournament, which brought under-18 teams from five

countries to play against local competition at Beijing's

Olympic National Stadium, will be an annual event. In

fact CST has already had confirmation from clubs in

Mexico that they'll be traveling for the 2011 event.

Drowned out perhaps in the hype surrounding FC

Barcelona's visit here, the inaugural Great Wall Cup was

won by Korea's Gwacheon Middle School, the country's

high school soccer champs, who beat teams from Italy,

the US, Australia and China for the medals.

Guns to goalposts Global Times | July 20, 2011 09:15 By Vera Penêda

"There was a lot of shooting and violence in the streets in City of God," said Yuri Marllon, 14, captain to the Zico Soccer Academy, from one of Brazil's renowned slums made famous in the movie with the same name. "Now life is more peaceful and we have the football school," added the teenager, who is in Beijing to participate in the second edition of The Great Wall Cup International Youth Tournament (GWC).

A total of 30 teams, including 14 from overseas, are participating in the only international youth football tournament in China. GWC merges football and culture in a week-long event that promotes integration and fair play. An incubator of talent and a stage for international exposure, GWC teaches young players aged between 11 and 18 how to thrive on and off the pitch.

China International NewspaperChinese coaches struggling with lack of

youngstersUpdated: 2011-07-19 07:56By Tang Yue (China Daily)

"Ten years ago, when I announced recruitment for the soccer team, the

students rushed to me and I had to disappoint some of them. But now

they show less interest and we have to persuade the parents to let them

play," Gao told China Daily on Sunday at the Great Wall Cup of

Beijing 2011 International Youth Football Tournament, which attracted

more than 30 teams from seven countries.

To play against foreign teams for the first time excited Gao's young

players as they sought glory for their country.

"I want to show them we are not that bad," said Yang Boshuo, 12,

referring to the struggling national team. "Its performance is really face-

losing. I doubt they have not washed their feet for a long time."

Children always need inspiration from local sports stars. Unfortunately,

China doesn't have a soccer version of basketball icon, Yao Ming.

youngsters from all over the world and also deliver a

positive image to the Chinese public. Since there is no event like GWC in China, even it’s only the 2nd

edition, it has already made a massive impact on

the Chinese football federation and professional

clubs

Sponsor will absolutely help the development of the

GWC and the investment return to the sponsor will
