Welcome to our November Newsletter, the last one of 2016 - where has the year disappeared to!? Many of you who receive our Newsletter are also regular readers of craft&design magazine, but some of you perhaps haven’t seen a recent copy of craft&design and therefore may not have heard our latest news? After more than 30 years of publishing our magazine, Paul and I recently announced that we feel the time is right to make some changes and, after a great deal of consideration, we have decided to make issue 250 March/April 2017 the last printed magazine that we produce. We started our magazine way back in 1983 and have obviously seen many changes since then, in the craft industry as well as in our personal lives - not least the fact that we are now more than three decades older and need to realistically look at what the future might be for ourselves and craft&design. So as I write, our web man is busy redesigning our websites www.craftanddesign.net and www.craftmaker.co.uk , ready to relaunch them both later next year. Selling your products online or at Christmas markets in the run up to Christmas?Whether you sell your products through your own website, through sites such as Ebay and Etsy, or at Christmas fairs, fetes and festivals, it’s important to make sure that you have the right insurance in place to cover your business against unforeseen circumstances.

Don’t put your livelihood at risk by not having the right insurance in place. Even a relatively minor accident, such as a slip or trip at an event or the manufacture of a faulty product could lead to a claim which may end up costing your business thousands of pounds. So make sure you’re covered.

At Direct Line for Business, we provide Home Business Insurance designed specifically for businesses running from home. Cover is tailored to suit your needs. So you can choose the right cover for you and your business.

Make sure you’re covered from just £55 a year!

(60% of customers paid this or less. Based on policies sold November 15 – April 16)

Kath Libbert Jewellery GalleryNew Tastes – Twelve New Graduates10 November - 29 January

Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, which this year celebrates twenty years at Salts Mill, Saltaire, has selected and exhibited the work of new graduates since its inception. In numerous cases these emerging talents have gone on to gain wide acclaim for their work, and many continue to be represented by the gallery. For the exhibition New Tastes Kath serves up twelve sumptuous collections cooked up by new graduates from all over the UK and Ireland: ‘Spotting and then supporting the work of cutting edge new graduates has always been extremely central to the ethos of the gallery. Forging a career straight out of college is really challenging. Now, more than ever, it is vital to exhibit and encourage these incredibly talented jewellers and metalsmiths at this formative stage in their careers.’Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, Salts Mill, Saltaire, Bradford BD18 3LAwww.kathlibbertjewellery.co.uk

London Glassblowing Studio 40th Anniversary Exhibition at Pyramid Gallery, 43 Stonegate, York YO1 8AWUntil 27 November

Pyramid Gallery in York is celebrating London Glassblowing Studio’s 40th anniversary with an exhibition of studio glass by the current studio team and founder Peter Layton, who is celebrating his 80th year. Pyramid Gallery has had a long association with London Glassblowing, going back over 30 years. Gallery owner Terry Brett recalls that upon taking over the business in 1994, his first sale to a customer was a very elegant white vase. “At that time I knew very little about the studio glass movement”, says Terry. “It was a glass collector from Germany who purchased that vase and it opened my eyes to an artform that has become a passion. Celebrating Peter’s 80th year is a very special moment for me, having exhibited in the 22 years some 250 pieces of glass that bear his signature!”The London Glassblowing glass exhibition - Peter Layton with Cathryn Shilling, Jochen Ott, Louis Thompson, Bruce Marks, Layne Rowe, Anthony Scala, Elliott Walker, Tim Rawlinson and Laura McKinley - is open daily 10am - 5pm and Sundays 12 noon - 4.30pm until 27 November.www.pyramidgallery.com

Michael Speller ‘Encompass’at The Clarendon Gallery, Dover Street, Mayfair W1S 4FF23 November - 7 December ‘Encompass’ is Michael Speller’s second solo show at the Clarendon Gallery. His newly created commission ‘Encompass’, which was unveiled earlier this year in Greenwich by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was the inspiration for this show.‘Encompass’, commissioned by the Crown Charity, Greenwich Hospital, is made up of 210 figures that form an open bronze sphere. The individual figures represent serving and retired personnel from The Royal Navy and Royal Marines who receive support from the charity. Each individual is unique and has been moulded and impressed with objects and words that reference their lives and location. They form a protective shield that travels up the sphere culminating in the doomed roof, which is a reference to the architectural style of Sir Christopher Wren, who originally designed The Royal Naval College, Greenwich.‘Encompass’ considers the individual; their own personal journey through life, their relationships with family, friends and society as a whole and the support they give and gain from each other. The constant balancing of these factors is a theme that runs through all of Michael’s work; balance and counterbalance of his figures as they constantly strive to find an inner equilibrium. There will be 18 bronze pieces showing at The Clarendon, with 5 new works, as yet unseen, including a scaled down representation of the original ‘Encompass’.

Creative CollaborationsA North East art gallery and a Scottish craft agency are sewing up their first year as collaborative partners with a new showcase spotlighting the work of makers north of the border. The partnership between The Biscuit Factory and Craft Scotland launched at the end of 2015 and has provided North East audiences with the chance to discover emerging talent.Craft Scotland is the national agency for craft and it works to unite, inspire and champion craft through creating opportunities for designer-makers in Scotland. As part of its ongoing relationship with The Biscuit Factory, six of the agency’s designer-makers are exhibiting and selling their work at the gallery this season. The line-up includes design duo Yellow Broom with their utilitarian handcrafted lighting; Chris Viviani with his ceramic and wooden kitchenware; ceramicist Jode Pankhurst who creates porcelain bottles, vases and pots; and Mairita Jonikane with her washable paper baskets. Two jewellers also feature: Cristina Zani, whose work combines natural and painted wood with precious and non-precious metals; and Cecilia Stamp, who explores a range of resin and enamel-based textures. The Biscuit Factory’s jewellery and textiles curator, Lauren Baker says: “Our collaboration with Craft Scotland over the past 12 months has provided an amazing platform to emerging makers establishing their creative practice, and I can’t wait to see how this new collection of work will integrate with the gallery’s more traditional offering.”The new Craft Scotland showcase at The Biscuit Factory runs until 9 January.

The Winter Tree by Kaffe Fassett at Standen 26 November – 2 January

Kaffe Fassett, renowned internationally for his bold use of colour, will unveil a winter tree, created specially for Standen, the National Trust’s Arts and Crafts house in Sussex. The collaboration this Christmas, of a winter tree and decorations throughout the house, is a vibrant way of interpreting the Arts and Crafts legacy at Standen, through the genius of a contemporary maker who has been likened to a modern day William Morris. Kaffe Fassett will create a signature tree in the courtyard, adorned with colourful handmade decorations. The designer’s work is part of museums and private collections around the world and this year’s commission at Standen follows on from a neon-decorated tree by the fashion designer Zandra Rhodes in 2015. Standen is much loved at Christmas for its beautiful decorated rooms, evoking the traditional festivities throughout the decades.Kaffe Fassett says: “As a child I was enchanted by Christmas, mainly because I saw a sober grown up world transformed into a theatrical fantasy of delight. I love being given the chance to bring back that childhood wonder before this beautifully preserved house.”National Trust General Manager Philip Barnes said: “Standen’s architect Philip Webb was a close friend and associate of William Morris and the influence of Morris is evident throughout the house. Standen is a special place, which will be brought to life by Kaffe Fassett’s new commission. The whole team is thrilled and

energised by Kaffe’s involvement. The ethos and philosophy of Arts and Crafts was radical in its day. We’re holding our breath for a bold, brilliant and colourful Winter Tree, which will be unveiled by the designer.”Following on from the Winter Tree is an exhibition of works by Kaffe Fassett at Standen House and Garden, 7 January – 23 April. There will also be two very special evenings on 16 February and 23 March, where Kaffe Fassett will talk about his work. £1.5 Booking essential: by phone 0344 249 1895 or at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/standenAlso at Standen - Christmas Crafts selling exhibition: Thursday to Sunday 1-4, 8-11, 15-18 December, with local crafts and art pieces from artists of the Sussex Guild. www.thesussexguild.co.uk

Guild of Enamellers’ Bursary Award 2017The Guild of Enamellers is delighted to announce Emily Higham as the 2017 winner of their annual Bursary Award. Emily, who recently graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing, was introduced to enamelling in the second year of her degree programme and experimented with a variety of techniques before being drawn to the sgraffito technique. Emily’s submission portrays the beautiful colours and the aesthetical, fragile and organic quality beehives and honeycomb hold, whilst still resembling the structural shapes found within hives. The gradual build-up of powdered and liquid enamels on formed silver and sgraffito mark making allowed Emily to develop and translate her initial drawings into the Hive collection. The Bursary Award will allow Emily to build on her enamelling and jewellery making skills whilst setting up her studio and further developing the hive theme. The Guild is extremely grateful to joint sponsors The British Society of Enamellers, W G Ball Ltd, craft&design Magazine, Milton Bridge Ceramic Colours and Vitrum Signum for supporting the Bursary Award. Sponsorship will allow Emily to benefit from conference, workshop and masterclass attendance, printed and online resources, Guild teaching DVDs, editorial and promotion with craft&design, enamel equipment and supplies vouchers, enamel sample sets and one year’s membership of both the Guild of Enamellers and the British Society of Enamellers. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors Hannah Duncan, Josefina Martinez and Leah Wadey were awarded runner-up prizes. The prize packages will encourage Emily and the runners-up to further develop their enamelling skills and exploration of the medium within the supportive networks offered. It was clear that the applicants had a real enthusiasm and flare for enamelling and the selection panel was impressed by the quality and diversity of the submissions. Both the Guild of Enamellers and the British Society of Enamellers will offer support and networking opportunities to all the applicants as they pursue their enamelling journey. Bursary applications for the 2018 Award will be available from April 2017 at www.guildofenamellers.orgJulie Rattray, Bursary Secretary
