It was impossible to miss the big events led by the Greater Burlington Partnership that took the area by storm in recent weeks – and why

would you have wanted to? So much fun, activity and throngs of visitors left a big impact on the area.

The 4th Annual A Very Vintage Market was a big success again this year. More than 100 participating vendors attracted thousands of novelty hunters into Downtown Burlington. Organized by Downtown Partners, Inc (DPI), this event drew 6,000+ people from well over 100 miles away. The event provided a significant boost in sales for area restaurants and was a fantastic vehicle to showcase historic Downtown Burlington. For area residents, it was a fun day spent enjoying the vendors while bumping into friends along the way.

That was just the warmup. RAGBRAI® about doubled the population of Greater Burlington in a span of a few hours. Twenty thousand riders entered the area for their last night of the RAGBRAI® journey. Thanks to the hundreds of Burlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce members and community volunteers, they received a warm welcome into the area. Greater Burlington rolled out the red carpet, providing camping, host families, temporary RV parks, live music, food trucks, free shuttle rides, and more! RAGBRAI® filled hotels, restaurants and local shops. Even the Des Moines County Fair saw a boost in attendees. It is estimated that RAGBRAI® generated an impact of more than $1 million dollars into the area economies. This all-hands-on-deck event demonstrated the strength of our communities. RAGBRAI® was made possible by the enormous amount of support of volunteers and the leadership of Chamber of Commerce staff, along with the cities and law enforcement departments of Burlington, West Burlington and Des Moines County.

Not to be left out of the action, the Greater Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau will step up with the final event to complete the trio – the Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament will once again fill the Burlington riverfront. Drawing teams from across the region, families will be coming from hours away the first weekend of August to compete in the basketball tournament and explore Greater Burlington. While only the second year of hosting the event, the Greater Burlington Partnership and CVB Staff and volunteers are sure to execute a nearly flawless tournament.

On behalf of the Greater Burlington Partnership, thank you to the volunteers who gave thousands of hours to the success of these three events. Thank you to the area businesses for your financial support and donations. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer, and please be sure to give GBP staff members a pat on the back when you see them. They have poured their hearts into these recent events. They deserve accolades for going above and beyond!

ON THE COVER Gus Macker Volunteers

The Greater Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau is excited to bring back Gus Macker for year two on August 3 - 4, 2019. Gus Macker is a national 3-on-3 basketball tournament franchise that began 46 years ago in Belding, Michigan. Macker games are designed for players who just love the fun of the driveway game - male or female, ages 7 to 70-plus, short and tall, the most experienced or those with little or no experience who just want to play. The Greater Burlington Gus Macker will be more than a basketball tournament – it will be a family fun festival.

The event includes fun music, good food, special events, and exciting basketball. Check out page nine for the weekend’s schedule of events. The success of the Greater Burlington tournament would not be possible without the group of volunteers helping to plan all of the details, recruit volunteers, recruit teams, and attain sponsorships. Thank you to everyone who is helping to support our local Gus Macker!

For decades, we have all driven west on Highway 34 past the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as we enter Middletown. We have simply been used to “the fence.” That fence has restricted entry into and out of the IAAAP to just a few gates, and if you do not have the proper badge or you are not on a list for entry, you do not go any further. That is about to change, at least for the area known as L Yard. The area from the commercial truck entrance to the current National Guard Armory will no longer be included in this fencing to encourage further commercial development of the State of Iowa 152-acre certified site. Site certification means that all due diligence and lengthy studies have already been accomplished and documented, allowing the site to be developed much more quickly.

Secure entry and exit may be desirable for some types of development, but it can be a hindrance for businesses that have multiple trucks or trucking companies with drivers coming and going throughout the day. The new entrance has been created directly across from South Prairie Grove Rd. The fencing project also encompasses 13 buildings with rail and truck height access and a lay-down yard for transloading from rail to truck. In the recent past, development prospects have balked at the idea of the increased level of security that is needed at the IAAAP for their operations, and this exciting change has already spurred new interest. Easier access along with no acquisition costs (lease ground only) and no property taxes make this site an attractive option.

In the next 30 years, an estimated $6.6 Billion will leave Des Moines County through inheritance. That’s over $200 Million a year that could be used to help grow our neighborhoods, towns and communities.

Now, it’s unrealistic to believe all of that money could be kept in Des Moines County. But – what if just the difference of 1% were to be donated to help fund progress? That’s $66 Million or over $2.1 Million a year that could be used to revitalize neighborhoods and create positive growth. But without your help, none of this will be possible.

It’s time to step up and help build a better community.

The Community Foundation of Des Moines County is a charitable foundation created by and for the citizens of Des Moines County. The Foundation is here to help donors make a positive, local impact through a variety of giving tools to aid people in achieving their charitable giving goals.

If you would like more information on how you could help build a better future, visit CFDMC.org or call 319-752-6365.

Main Street Challenge Grant for DowntownDowntown Partners is seeking project proposals for the 2019 Main Street Challenge Grant, funded through the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Each of the state’s Main Street organizations can apply on behalf of one brick and mortar project. The maximum grant award is $75,000 with a minimum 1:1 cash match required. The project must be located in the downtown district, and work already begun is not eligible for funding.

“We’ve been fortunate to receive Main Street Challenge Grants for the past three years to assist a variety of building

projects,” said Steve Frevert. “There is a lot of competition for this money, and although we can not guarantee funding, a strong project proposal will benefit both the property and the downtown – for instance, creating a commercial space, adding housing, or restoring a significant façade.”

For application information, go to GreaterBurlington.com/downtown/downtown-development/building-assistance. The project summary deadline is August 16.
