THE ENLIGHTENER Christmas is coming; the goose is getting fat.
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat.
If you haven’t got a penny - a ha’penny will do.
If you haven’t got a ha’penny –
God bless you!
Many of us know this song from our childhood. It’s a Christmas classic that should never be lost. It speaks
to our me – when some of us have fat geese, some have geese that are skin and bones because their food had to
go to feed the children, and others – well, their goose is cooked.
It speaks of charity – a word that lost a lot of its “oom-pah” when the King James Version of the Bible gave
way to modern translaons which changed the translaon of 1 Corinthians 13. It no longer spoke of “charity,” but
of “love.” (“Now abideth Faith, Hope, and Charity [Love]; but the greatest of these is Charity [Love]”) It’s sll the
same word in the original Greek – agape (pronounced ah-gah-pay) – the same word that equals God in 1 John 4:8
- “God is love (agape).” Sll, modern translators agree that “charity” is a less-than-correct translaon of agape.
What comes of our scholarly correctness is a loss of the knowledge that Chrisan “love” is not a feeling,
but an acon. Love in acon takes many forms, and may be limited by one’s abilies and resources. Few of us
could afford to feed the hungry of Greece ( much less Rochester) for a year, or probably even a day. But almost all
of us can donate a can of tuna to the Greece Food Shelf. Just about any of us can serve a meal at the Salem
Nutrion Center or prepare gi7s for the youth at the Villa of Hope. And those who cannot can pray for
themselves and others alongside the more affluent. “If you haven’t got a penny, a half-penny will do; if you
haven’t got a half-penny, God bless you.”
This Christmas, (if not always), find a way to turn your love into charity. Put a few coins in the hand of
someone asking for help along the road, or a greenback in the Ke>le, or a check in the mail to your favorite
organizaon. Put a toy in the barrel; put food in the pantry; put a pair of mi>ens on the tree; cut your hair for kids
with cancer. Donate clothing, or swing a hammer for Habitat for Humanity. Invite a single person to dinner, and
listen to their story. Do something concrete instead of something symbolic.
And for God’s sake - as well as your own and others’ – let someone love you in the way you need it most.
Be a “charity case.”
We are all “charity cases,” you know. “God so loved (agapao) the world that he gave his only bego%en
son.” God gave, not because we deserved it, but because we needed it – that’s charity. “Brothers and sisters if
God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (I John 4:11).
This year, we invite you to join us in celebrang Advent and Christmas with your church family. On Satur-
day, December 1st, at 9:00 a.m., we will have a ”Hanging of the Greens,” decorang the church. On Sunday, De-
cember 2nd, we will begin our celebraon of Advent with the lighng of the Advent wreath. On Saturday, De-
cember 8th at 7:00 p.m
., and on Sunday December 9 at 3:00 p.m
., we will present an “old-me radio” version of the
classic It’s A Wonderful Life, starring members of our church and the community. On December 20th, at 7:00 at
Messiah Lutheran Church, the churches of Greece will gather for a “Blue Christmas’ service. This is a Christmas
worship for those who are feeling a li>le “blue” this Christmas, because of loneliness, or
grief, or loss. It is a profound acknowledgement of the Love of God who has been given
to us in the person of Jesus – love that transcends the trouble of this world.
On Christmas Eve, Tuesday December 24th
, we will have our tradional
candlelight service of Scripture and carols at 7:00 p.m.
May God bless you and yours, at Christmas, and always.
In Christ’s love (agape),
Pastor Matt Stengel

Message from Outreach:
“Deck the halls with boughs of holly!” While we think of this song as “lauding the onset of the Christmas holiday,” it was originally sung to “celebrate the im-pending new year.” We’ve covered both! From October 28--November 18, we sponsored the Dove Campaign to benefit a variety of programs at the Open Door Mission. On November 25, Chris Scribani, Director of Development at the Open Door Mission, was present at both ser-vices to receive approximately $180 in donations! On November 11, we honored our Veterans with a special service and the gift of a small lapel pin, saluting their service. As always, our November 18 Bucket Brigade brought a wealth of frozen turkeys, canned and boxed goods to fill up boxes for 10 families. Special thanks to David at the Latta Road UPS Store for selling us those boxes for only $1.00 each! Let’s load up our Mitten Tree with scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens—once again benefitting the Seneca Street UMC in Buffalo and Open Door Mission. Our stalwart Red Kettle crew, organized by Gale Huber, will brave the weather on De-cember 14 to ring in money for the Salvation Army. In addition, we have several more opportunities to volunteer for Salvation Army projects throughout the month. (Check the flyers on the table in the commons). Finally, December 30 is Undie Sunday, so let’s fill up our big green basket with undies and socks for our 6 elementary schools as well as adult undies for the Open Door Mis-sion and Veterans Outreach Center. Thank you: these two small words don’t seem enough to show appreciation for the huge difference this church makes in our community.
Many Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

Five things you may not know about Christmas (Excerpt)
We know the stories in the Bible, a>end Advent and Christmas Eve worship each year, listen to tons of
Christmas carols, and have seen just about every Christmas movie and special. We United Methodists
know a lot about Christmas, but like most things there is always more to learn. Here are a few lesser-
known dbits.
John Wesley never published a Christmas sermon
If you search for Christmas sermons by John Wesley, you won’t find any. He never published one.
One reason may be that when the Puritans rose to power in mid-1600s England, Christmas fell out of
favor. Authories passed laws a>empng to prohibit the celebraon of Christmas. On Christmas Eve,
some towns even sent criers to call out, “No Christmas! No Christmas!”
Charles Wesley wrote a popular Christmas song
John Wesley never published a Christmas sermon, but his hymn-wring brother Charles wrote songs for
the season from the very beginning. The first Methodist hymnbook, Hymns and Sacred Poems (1739),
includes Charles’ “Hymn for Christmas-Day.” The song begins, “Hark how all the welkin rings, ‘Glory to the
King of kings.’” Another Methodist preacher would change the opening line to words we know much
be>er, “Hark! the Herald Angel Sings.”
Na;vi;es are filled with symbolism
What our navies lack in historical accuracy is o7en due to the inclusion of powerful symbolism. For
example, the baby Jesus figurine somemes has outstretched arms, despite the angels’ words to the
shepherds that they would find him “swaddled and lying in a manger.” The open arms are a sign of
welcome, an invitaon to receive the salvaon we know in Christ. Other elements like animals, trees, and
wells also have symbolic significance. Read “Navity scenes: More than meets the eye” to learn more
about your navity set.
Joseph and Mary’s journey
It may surprise even those who have been Chrisans for years, to learn how li>le we know about the man
who raised Jesus. Joseph is only menoned in 16 verses in the Bible and none of his words are recorded.
The Bible tells us only two things definively. His dad’s name was Jacob, and he worked as a cra7sman,
probably a woodworker.
Red keCles have United Methodist links
When Christmas shopping, many encounter the red ke>les and ringing bells of The Salvaon Army. Not all
will know that the Salvaon Army has Methodist roots.
If you would like to read more details of each of these, please visit the original arcle h%p://

Trunk or Treat! Thank you to everyone who came out for our rst annual Trunk or Treat. Even with the
rain, we had about 60 kids and adults show up. Fun was had by all. We received lots of
thanks for putting this event on. We have already begun brainstorming for next year’s
event.
A special thank you to a couple of local businesses for coming out and supporting us.
• Dominos Long Pond for providing free pizzas for our volunteers. They were yummy!
They also donated 5 gift certicates for a large three topping pizza and order of bread
sticks. We had a free give away—4 for the families that came and one for a Trunk or
Treat volunteer. The winners were:
Maria Rodrigues
Keith Jackson
Alan Hill
Laila Winters
Chris Collins—Trunk or Treat volunteer
• Wards Scientic—John Tompkins from Wards came out with amazing displays of
actual human and animal skeletons and organs. There were lots of “cools” and “ews”
from kids and adults alike. He also handed out Matchbox vehicles to all the kids. The
extra Matchboxes were donated for the kids at the Priscilla House, our Veteran
Outreach mission.
It’s the holiday season and it’s heartwarming to know that Greece churches have placed 6 families in homes in which they can celebrate the season with their families. By next year, there will be a 7th family thanks to the generosity of the members of all our churches. We started 18 years ago with the intention of sponsoring one home but here we are 18 years later functioning as a team to keep this great work going. As of now, it is expected that we will break ground in the spring.
Nothing else has changed with the same homeowner, named Kiomy, she is 33 and has two children, daughter Kinayahlie (9) and son Liam (3). She was born and raised in Puerto Rico, is a hardworking single Mom waitressing at Chili’s and is excited to own a home and being able to give her kids a stable, safe home with their own rooms and a yard to play in. Keep her and her family in your prayers this season.
If you haven’t volunteered to work on the homes in the past, give it some consideration. The local affiliate has set up a very helpful online sign up on their website, rochesterhabitat.org. The signup for our home won’t be ready until we get closer to the start date, but you could volunteer on any home if you’d like. Habitat does a great job of assigning work, and training where necessary. It’s a great experience as you work with other representatives which could even include current and potential homeowners. If you think you’d like to get involved in any way, please contact me at [email protected] . I can always use someone to represent our church (the founding church) at meetings I’m not able to attend.
