~Pastor’s Reflections~

With Bishop Finegan’s appointment of Michael Holman as

Licensed Lay Minister for Bethany and Emanuel my time as adminis-

trative interim comes to an end. While it has added to my work

load, I have also enjoyed getting to know both congregations. At

Emanuel’s annual meeting I said that they were small but healthy

and I would say the same thing about Bethany. With solid leader-

ship in both places and the faithful proclamation of Pastor Chrys and

Virginia, my impression is that things have stayed remarkably steady

over the past year and a half. Often during pastoral vacancies there

is what I would call “slippage” as people get discouraged. Maybe

because you have been down this road before, that hasn’t

happened. There continue to be good things happening in both

churches! You are to be commended for your faithfulness!

I think that the appointment of a Licensed Lay Minister is a

good development at this time. It will provide you with a leader

dedicated to the two congregations which should help with all

aspects of your ministry. Having known Michael for a couple of

years, I think you will enjoy his presence among you and that he will

enjoy serving you.

You are very well acquainted with the challenges that smaller

congregations face these days. Despite the challenges I hope that

there will always be a place for congregations like yours because I

think it can be there that we get a better sense of what it is be the

church as a Christ centered group of people who know one another,

care about one another and witness to their faith in service to the

wider community. As I said, small but healthy!

Thank You for Supporting our New Roof!

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up online for our new roof! Please share it

with your friends and family via face book, twitter and email. You can do a search

on the website www.gofundme.com with the words “Skandia, MI” or you can use

the following link:

gofundme.com/h7rdwp-new-roof-for-church

As of January 31 we have raised $2125 thru GoFundMe!

It’s a small world when it comes to the Lutheran church

(especially in the UP!). I look forward to the times our paths will

cross again!

Pastor Warren Geier

Sunday, February 3 is Super Bowl Sunday!

Emanuel will participate in the Super Bowl

of Caring nationwide collection to help fight

hunger in America. Since 1990 over 90

million in money and food items have been

collected and donated to local hunger-relief charities. You are

asked to donate $1 and a can of soup. The soup will go to the food

pantry at Victory Church at Sawyer and the money collected to the

ELCA efforts for Hunger Relief. Thank you.

Emanuel’s food donation barrel known as the “Country Cupboard” is

located near the entry to the fellowship hall. We gladly accept non perish-

able food items, paper products, cleaning supplies and health/beauty aids.

Donations will be brought to our local St. Vincent’s in Gwinn or the Food

Pantry at Victory Church of Sawyer. So the next time you are grocery

shopping, why not pick up something extra to donate to Emanuel’s

outreach effort to help feed our community.

With our winter season now here, if inclement weather

ever causes our Sunday Worship services to be

cancelled, we will have a message on our phone

reflecting the cancellation, 942-7245. Please call if roads

are questionable before traveling.

Quilting for Lutheran World Relief has resumed at

Toni Peterson’s home, 214 Maple Grove Road, on

Tuesdays at 9 :30 a.m. All are invited to join; you need

no quilting experience! We always are in need of used

flat sheets and thread, both for sewing and tying the

quilts.

Remember in Prayer …

Our members, family, and friends who are ill, have health

concerns, are grieving, or are in need.

Our members who are absent from worship and unable to

attend … Herb Anderson

and prayers for Lori Linna-Cooke.

Our Thanks and Praise to God.

If you have a prayer request, please let the office know by

calling or by leaving a message at 942-7245.

~Council Update~

The council did not have a regular meeting in January since we had our

Annual Meeting on January 20. We also had a joint council meeting with

Bethany Church of Negaunee on January 9 with Bishop Katherine Finegan

about the possibility of having a Licensed Lay Minister serve both

Emanuel and Bethany Churches.

The Annual Meeting highlights include:

Reviewing and accepting the annual report of summaries for the year

2018 from all committees.

Reviewing and accepting the budget proposal for 2019.

Betsy Koski renewed another 3 year term for serving on the council

and we welcome Dan Bahrman who will begin serving on the council

in February.

Synod Assembly Voting Delegates in May are Sarah Kimball & Gisele

Duehring.

Extra Conference Delegates are Jane Sims & Karen Maki.

Next year’s Nominating Committee: Barb Bach, Jane Sims & Karen

Maki

Next year’s Auditing Committee : Patti Bergdahl, Laurie Beauchamp &

Sandi Ruotsi.

The complete minutes from the Annual Meeting are posted at both the

entry to the sanctuary and the fellowship hall.

The council held a brief meeting after fellowship on Sunday, January 27.

At this meeting Michael Holman was voted to serve Emanuel as our

Licensed Lay Minister with a one year contract. He will begin this position

February 1, 2019.

~Outreach Update~

Can you help us? With the winter sales in progress, we are always on the lookout

for items used in our annual bazaar! We need:

wreath ribbon (especially red, plaid & burlap) & artificial red berries,

natural looking artificial greens (or even artificial trees that we can take

apart) for centerpiece decorating,

if you have used calendars that have pictures of nature, we use them for

framed crafts,

picture frames and mat boards, especially larger frames,

candles; tapers, votives and small tea lights,

Christmas fabric for table runners, aprons, and quilts,

bird houses, or easy birdhouse plans to construct.

Coming in March, confirmation students and leaders are invited to the 2019

Marked! Event. These events include music, worship, learning, food, fun

and service projects. Each year participants compile kits used for Lutheran

World Relief. This year kits include:

Light-weight bath –size towel, dark color recommended

Bath –size bars of soap (8 –9 oz. size in original wrapper)

Adult-size toothbrush

Sturdy combs

Metal nail clippers attached nail file optional

We will collect these items and be sure they reach a site where a Marked! Event is

being held in March. Thank you!

Our next Outreach Committee meeting is Friday, February 22 at 10 a.m. All are

invited to attend.

Dear Friends at Emanuel Lutheran Church,

Greetings from Lutheran World Relief! We’re so thankful for your

partnership, and for your energy and enthusiasm for this ministry.

I’m excited to be able to share some details about where some of your

items traveled in the last year. You may already have spotted in your

online Tracker record that your Mission Quilts have gone to

Mauritania. Your donations departed our warehouse on November

23, 2018.

LWR’s partner, Lutheran World Federation/World Service, has been

working with 6 national NGOs through enhancing their institutional,

managerial and technical capacities to ensure sustainable develop-

ment and advocacy in Mauritania. This shipment of Quilts and Kits is

estimated to reach 60,000 individuals in various places, especially the

Mbera Malian Refugee camp on the periphery of Nouakchott.

To learn more about his shipment, visit quiltmap.lwr.org and click on

the country to view a report. We will provide updates as we receive

information from our partner. Thank you so much for your partner-

ship in bringing hope to our neighbors in around the world. We thank

God for you!

Continued blessings on your ministry!

~125th Anniversary Update~

We are Celebrating 125 Years of Grace in 2019 and the planning continues

for this upcoming milestone for Emanuel Lutheran Church of Skandia!

Recipes have been compiled for the Anniversary Cookbook and is ready for

its first proofing before hard copies are printed. The wooden ornaments

made by Joe Erickson depicting our church, were sold at the bazaar along

with beautiful Christmas cards. We still have both for sale in the office.

We are hoping for additional greeting cards showing the beauty of the

different seasons at Emanuel. If you have any photos of Emanuel, please

share them for possible greeting cards! The next brochure being printed

and mailed will have the finalized dates of the upcoming events and the

important RSVP form for the 125th Anniversary Dinner and Program on

Saturday, August 24. We are still looking for some addresses of past

members. Please take a look at the list in the Fellowship Hall and if you

happen to know of any of the needed address it would be appreciated!

We want to be sure Emanuel is represented in the Skandia Day’s Parade in

July, and are looking for someone to coordinate our float. Roger still has

the replica of Emanuel to put on a trailer for the parade. Other events

planned are a Mother’s Day Tea, a music concert and an open house, a

historical cemetery walk and of course returning Pastors that will visit and

speak during worship at various times this anniversary year. You are

always welcome to help with the events planned or attend upcoming

meetings to ensure our 125th Anniversary is an enjoyable, meaningful and

well remembered event for all!
