Columbia University Facilities install "green roofs"

•The benefits that green roofs deliver to the environment - include cleaner air quality and energy conservation.

•Grass and plants growing on green roofs take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turn it into oxygen, helping cool temperatures in the hottest months and cleaning the air supply.

Columbia University Facilities installed "green roofs" at 423 West 118th Street (above Radio Perfecto) and 635 West 115th Street, where the Office of Environmental Stewardship is located.

Willamette University Kaneko Commons project

•As a LEED Gold certified project, the Kaneko Commons features water source heat pumps, a rainwater reclamation reservoir and solar hot water heating.

•Photovoltaic panels not only augment the electricity supply for the building, but also serve as shading devices for residential units and the atrium.

•Southwood Hall boasts a geothermal heating and cooling system.

•Solar heating panels, and storm water recovery for irrigation.

•Rubber tile flooring, bamboo cabinets, low-flow toilets and Energy Star appliances.

•The photovoltaic (PV) system on the building's roof also works to reduce environmental impact.

•Geothermal wells also help to heat and cool the building.

•When possible, the construction utilized scrap materials from the rest of the campus

CSUMB's 'green' library grows skyward

Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library is not only the largest building on campus, but also the greenest.

•Many of the library's energy-saving features are designed to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the building.

•It's more expensive to cool a building than to heat it, so keeping heat out is the key.

•The roof over the spacious atrium features a decorative "wave" design, but its shape also saves energy.

Spelman College, Atlanta, GA

•Spelman College announced that The Suites has become the first residence hall at a historically Black college or university to attain the Leadership in Energy and Enviornmental Design (LEED®) certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.
