Her work in school was primarily focused on the figure. As part of her studies, she spent a year in Ireland, painting from dreams and imagination. She has been exhibiting her work in and around the Chicago area since 1985, and in the South of France, where she lived and painted for two years. Her subject currently is the city, she works both on location, and from photography in oils and watercol- ors. She also paints house and pet portraits, reflecting her passions for architecture and animals. Karen was the first artist/teacher to join the teaching staff at the Greenleaf Art Center, she was instrumental in setting up our early curriculum. She is very special to us here at Greenleaf and an excellent teacher too!

Francine Gourguechon has been designing and installing mosaic installations forthe last 15 years. Smaller projects are worked on in her studio in West Rogers Park Her design sense comes from her education at the Art Institute of Chicago plus years of painting, photographing, teaching, and appreciating art.You can see her mosaic work on her website: www.chicagomosaics.com

Tom Hicke Tom is a graduate of The American Academy of Art and a professional illustrator and teacher in Chicago for more than 20 years.

Claudia Laska Claudia has taught art and design as adjunct faculty at Columbia College Chicago since 2002. She has taught painting in both private and institutional settings since 1997. She is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago and a freelance graphic designer.

Lorelei MacBeth Lorelei has a masters in teaching from Columbia College and has taught fine arts at Chicago’s Farragut Career Academy High School since 2001. She studied painting, sculpture and printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy.

Sarah B. Ellis Nyktas Sarah is an artist and designer from Michigan who knits whenever she has a spare moment. She loves printmaking and digital media but has found her needles and yarn to be a more portable craft. She first learned to knit at the age of 10, but did not take it up seriously until about 8 years ago. Memories of her grandfather's clever knit creations still inspire her today.

Joyce Wood O’Callaghan Joyce has studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Harper College and American and European traditional art studies. She has been painting for many years and enjoys doing abstract and Impressionistic art.

Kathleen Paluch Kathleen has a BFA from Mundelein College/Loyola University. She has more than 30 years of experience teaching children and young adults. Kathleen is one of the founders of the Greenleaf Art Center.

Karen Perl Karen is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute where she stud-ied painting and drawing with a strong emphasis on the figure. She is represented by Packer-Schopf Gallery in Chicago.

Judith McCabe Renner Judith holds a degree from the American Academy of Art. She studied with Richard Schmid at Palette and Chisel, and worked for the Calabash Animation Studio at Tree Studios in Chicago. Judith has exhibited in numerous venues and is collected internationally including some pieces in the Kamp Gallery at the Drake Hotel Chicago.

Janet Rooney Janet holds numerous degrees in painting and design. Presently she is an Adjunct Professor at both Harrington College of Design, Chicago and Columbia College, Chicago. She has also been the Guest Artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Shawn Sargent Shawn is an artist and writer with a degree from the School of the Art Institute. She also studied at School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before moving to Chicago, and has taught art and academics in private and small group set-tings. She currently works as a freelance editor while continuing to create photo-based art that has been exhibited nationally and selected for book and journal covers.

Jill Sutton Jill has a MFA, California College of the Arts; BFA, Washington University in St. Louis. Teaching experience includes Evanston Art Center, Old Town Triangle Association, Civic Arts Education, Walnut Creek, CA, California College of the Arts, , Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO. Has exhibited throughout the Midwest and California. Represented by Melanee Cooper Gallery in Chicago.

MOSAICS WorkshopStarting Saturday, September 17th we will have a 3 session mosaic workshop guided by artist Francine Gourguechon.

The first 2 Saturdays are for the piecing and glueing of the tessera (mosaic materials). Francine will show the basic techniques and materials of applying the tessera to the object to be mosaiced. She will also direct students in design and color choice. The 3rd Saturday the glue should be dry and Francine will show grouting tecniques....it’s fun and messy and brings all the mosaic tessera together into a whole form.

Supply list: Tile nippers (any hardware store)Any tessera you may have or can get ceramic tile (tile outlet on Fullerton) glass, buttons, marbles, brocken china, keys, nails and screws, etc. An object to mosaic: medium size flower pot, interesting shaped vase, table top with edges, tray with edges, brick to hold your door open, etc.

Class Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis, payment is due at registration. You must pre-register to ensure space in a class or work-shop. Checks should be made to Greenleaf Art Center. Refunds will be given less a processing fee of $10, you must withdraw from a class prior to the start date. If you know, at registration, that you will miss a class session you can deduct the cost of that class from the tuition. (After registration no cash refunds for missed classes is given, a makeup class can be arranged within the same semester only.)

GAC reserves the right to cancel a class or workshop if a minimum of enroll-ment is not met. A list of supplies for classes will be available on our website www.GreenleafArtCenter.com or at registration.

Family Discount - Pay full price for one and get 10% off tuition for all other members of the same family.

From film and TV to comic books, video games & children’s books: genre characters are everywhere. Rooted in character driven stories, concept design plays an essential role in todays most exciting visual entertainment. Charac-ter Design 101 will survey constructive approaches to drawing, build visual interpretation skills, and help students gain insight into the development of their own characters. Enter the sparkling world of India Ink. Combine soft lush lines with the crisp strokes of the steel nib for endless variations in form and design. Students will learn the proper use of tools and media; the basics of brush control; hatch and cross-hatching; how to effectively combine line and wash; spotting blacks for illustration; and how to create final pencil art to be rendered in ink. The course will utilize group discussion, instructor demonstration, and a special sketch book project designed to develop each student’s working knowledge of this facinating media.

My Creative Voice Art Making for Tweens 9-12 years

Imagine Goldlocks in the home of the Three Dinosaurs! Learn to draw unique pictures that are so full of energy that they appear to leap from the page. Create rough sketches, develop color drawings using the wofking methods practiced by top storyboard artists and cartoonists. Bring a 9” x 12” sketchbook, two #2 pencils, a kneadable eraser and your imagination to first class.

First time ever!!!

MOSAICS WorkshopStarting Saturday, September 17th we will have a 3 session mosaic workshop guided by artist Francine Gourguechon.

The first 2 Saturdays are for the piecing and glueing of the tessera (mosaic materials). Francine will show the basic techniques and materials of applying the tessera to the object to be mosaiced. She will also direct students in design and color choice. The 3rd Saturday the glue should be dry and Francine will show grouting tecniques....it’s fun and messy and brings all the mosaic tessera together into a whole form.

Supply list: Tile nippers (any hardware store)Any tessera you may have or can get ceramic tile (tile outlet on Fullerton) glass, buttons, marbles, brocken china, keys, nails and screws, etc. An object to mosaic: medium size flower pot, interesting shaped vase, table top with edges, tray with edges, brick to hold your door open, etc.
