GREETINGS FROM COOLIDGE SCHOOL January 23, 2017 Dear Families, Teachers at Coolidge use questions to elicit thinking and to spark debate. For example, asking Who are the leaders in our community? encourages children to contemplate the components of leadership. This week I have a question that I hope will start you thinking: When is becoming twice as good still not enough? The answer: when we are looking at Coolidge fact fluency statistics. Let me explain what I mean. On Curriculum Night at all grade levels teachers shared the objectives students are expected to master in Math. One of the main goals at each level is that students will develop automaticity with basic operations. To monitor our progress we assess children once a month. Here’s a snapshot of Grade 4: Operation September % students @mastery January % students @mastery Addition 48 94 Subtraction 31 71 Multiplication 25 46 Division 21 44 The good news is, at this point nearly all of our fourth graders have met addition fluency expectations. The bad news is that they were expected to do that by the end of second grade. As you can see, the delay had real implications for developing fluency in the other operations. More to the point, students that lack fluency also lack “number sense” and this affects their efficiency when tackling more complex word problems. Fact fluency is important at every grade, just as it is in Reading. Please come to Math Night THIS THURSDAY at 7 to learn more about fun ways you can boost your child’s skills! Sincerely, Amy

From the Nurse: There have been several students in the school with Strep throat. Please watch your child for signs of strep throat: throat pain, headaches, fever, stomachaches, sometimes vomiting (especially in young children), swollen and tender neck glands (nodes), red and swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches and streaks of pus) or a rash. If your child does develop a sore throat and any of these other signs, please see your health care provider. Let them know that several children at school have strep, and ask to have your child tested for strep throat. The test is quick and treatment can be started. Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 to 15, but it affects people of all ages. It is very contagious and is spread through airborne droplets when the infected person coughs or sneezes. If you suspect your child may have strep throat please keep them home till they have been seen by their doctor and you have a negative culture or have been on antibiotics for 24 hours and the fever is gone. We have also been seeing cases of vomiting and a GI bug as well as colds. Please keep your children at home till they are fever free for 24 hours and eating and sleeping well. If you have any questions or concerns please call me at 508-841-8887. Thank you, Katie Zimmermann RN, BSN, NCSN

HEALTH: Food Explorers January Discovery

January’s Food Explorer Discovery is Oranges! Since it’s cold and flu season, everyone should snack on some yummy and healthy oranges every week. They are one of the best sources of Vitamin C, which we could all use this time of year. And don’t forget – orange juice counts! This month, check out the recipe for making an “Orange Smoothie” which uses only three ingredients - milk, frozen orange juice concentrate, and cold water. It’s so easy, but so good – and so good for you too! For anyone without nut allergies, try it my way with Almond Milk instead of regular milk. For some delicious varieties, use this recipe as a base and then add in other fresh or frozen fruits and/or berries. Your smoothie will be bursting with flavor, vitamins and fiber. Enjoy!!
