Greetings from the Principal’s Office

Lakewood’s Voice – Lakewood’s Vision!

As you drive by Lakewood High School, it is easy to see the impact of the Facilities Master Plan for the renovation of Lake-wood’s schools. The area west of the Civic Auditorium is past the mid-point in its renovation and is scheduled to open in August for the 2009-2010 school year.

This will complete “Phase 2” of the district Facilities Master Plan. “Phase 3” of the plan includes the renovations and downsizing of the remain-

ing elementary schools and completion of the Lakewood High School project. A steering committee consisting of parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, and interested members of the community has been meeting to gather the infor-mation about “Phase 3”, share it with the Lakewood community and once again seek the guidance and direction of those make our schools strong – YOU!

We need your input. The first Community Forum on “Phase 3” of the district Fa-

cilities Master Plan will be held on Thursday, April 2nd beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the LHS East Cafeteria. I would strongly encourage you to attend and help us identify the most important issues and develop the path for completing the final steps of this project.

If you would like more information about the Community Forum or the Facili-

ties Master Plan, please feel free to give me a call. Please mark your calendars for this important meeting as we continue our commitment to make Lakewood High School the best possible… Every Period, Every Day!

Sincerely yours with Ranger Pride,

Bill Wagner

District Message

All courses and programs are offered by Lakewood High School without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, creed, gender, marital status, disability, or age in its education programs, activities, employment policies or admission policies and practices as required under Title VI and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. 2

More than 100 people from the community have signed on to be part of the Steering Committee that will help determine the course of action for our remaining elementary schools – Grant, Lincoln and Roosevelt – as well as for the east side of the high school. The committee has held three meetings to date and is working hard to gather information, update and review the critical data such as population and enrollment trends and to identify the critical issues to be taken into consideration when formulating their recommended plan. At the crux of the planning process is whether or not to renovate or construct two or three of the remaining elementary schools. The Ohio School Facilities Commission has notified the district that it will only fund con-struction and/or renovation of two more elementary schools in the district because of declining enrollment. The district would be on its own to fund a third elementary project. As in the past, the district will be asking for input from the community at large so that we have the greatest consensus possible. Please mark on your calendars and plan to attend the two community forums scheduled. The first will be held April 2 at 7 p.m. at LHS’ East Cafeteria. This first forum will describe the process, pro-vide data and seek opinions on issues critical to the committee’s decision. The second forum will be held Sept. 15, also at LHS at 7 p.m., and will present options for our buildings to be presented to the Board and al-low the community to comment on those options. It is important for as many people to attend these as possible so that the community’s voice is heard on this critical project for our district and city’s future. For updates on the work of the Steering Committee, please visit our web site at www.lakewoodcityschools.org.

WE NEED YOUR INPUT ON PHASE III Even as work continues full-speed ahead on the west wing of the high school as the last part of Phase II of our Facilities Master Plan, the planning for Phase III, the final phase, is now underway.

OASSA recognizes Assistant Principal of the Year! OHIO ASSOCIATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

Congratulations to Mr. Gerald Lanning, who was selected as the MetLife/NASSP Assistant Principal of the Year for the state of Ohio. Mr. Lanning has served at Lakewood since 2006, with prior experience at Olmsted Falls (2000-2006) and Avon Lake (1997-2000) as an Assistant Principal. Jerry has served on the Ohio Educator Standards Board / Master Teacher Training Program, and led a school team that participated in Battelle training to prepare Lakewood to become a Value-Added Pilot School. One of Jerry’s recommendation letters included the following: “Jerry’s strong focus on the instructional program did not diminish his understanding that a school needs to have a positive school culture to operate effectively, and he worked with others to ensure that students and teachers were focused on operating in a safe and orderly environment.” As our Assistant Principal of the Year, Mr. Lanning will attend a two-day recognition program on April 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency in Arlington, VA, where honorees will participate in professional development and networking

activities with their peers. Jerry will also be recognized at the OASSA Assistant Principal’s Conference on February 23-24, and receive a plaque from OASSA and a signet ring from Herff Jones Company. He will represent Ohio in the NASSP search for the National Assistant Principal of the Year. The application process includes an emphasis in the following criteria: collaborative leadership, personalizing the educational experience, and curriculum/instructional innovation. We are proud of Mr. Lanning, and his continued commitment to the students and staff of Lakewood High School!

Schedule changes Students are reminded that registration for

classes every year is a very serious time of de-cision making. Once they have signed up for classes they are committed to those classes.

Based on student registrations in the spring,

some classes are not offered, others are ex-panded and teachers are reappointed. There-fore, only SCHEDULE CORRECTIONS will

be made after June 2009

Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) will be administered during the week of March 16-March 20. As you are aware, students must pass all five tests in order to receive a high school di-ploma. That is certainly an incentive for students to do their best on these tests! However, with a little extra effort and commitment some students can score in the advanced and accelerated range. These students need to be encouraged to do so for reasons that go beyond the graduation requirement, including:

Advanced or accelerated OGT scores demonstrate interest and achievement in either a particular subject area or many areas.

OGT scores assist the staff in placing students into specialized programs, e.g., Advanced Placement, which require student ap-plications.

OGT scores in the advanced and accelerated range assist the staff in recommending students for special recognitions and oppor-tunities, i.e., Summer Honors Institutes, Cleveland Clinic Internships, scholarships, medals and departmental awards.

Students who wish to be considered for National Honor Society membership in junior year must pass all five OGTs. With a little extra effort, many of these students can score in the advanced/accelerated range.

Actual OGT scores, not simply pass/fail, are listed on transcripts that are reviewed by college admissions officers and scholar-ship committees.

Students who consistently put forth their best effort are better prepared for the challenges of college.

Terra Nova tests and the Test of Cognitive Skills (TCS) will be given to freshman during the

week of March 16. The purpose of these stan-dardized tests is to find out which skills have been mastered and which need further development, as well as to measure thinking and reasoning skills. The students taking these tests should be encour-

aged to do their very best.

SAT Subject Tests are one-hour long multiple-choice tests that measure knowledge and skills in a specific subject area. Some colleges (usually the highly selective ones) specify the SAT Subject Tests they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take. Students should check with col-leges as to their requirements. Subject Tests should be taken as soon as possible after completing the course in

the subject area. Important information and test preparation materials are available at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/about/SATII.html.

Lakewood Music Boosters

14

There is two kinds of music, the good and bad. I play the good kind.

Louis Armstrong

Whatever kind of music you play, or whatever kind of music you enjoy, there is an opportunity for you in the Lakewood Music Boosters.

Opportunity to support, applaud, & cheer for Lakewood’s student musicians Opportunity for fun

Opportunity to help through volunteering Opportunity to assure the future of the Lakewood Music Boosters by supporting our fundraisers

Fundraising: 1st VPs Betsy Lantz & Stacie Dashielle are currently working on our annual Spring Plant Sale. All money earned is put right back into helping Lakewood music students—so be sure to order plenty of plants!

Volunteering: 2nd VP Karen Matricardi is scheduling two opportunities for service: On April 1st, the First Annual Jazz Festival will be held at Harding, and we need concession helpers starting at 6:30 p.m. Then on April 4th we will need concession helpers from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the DARE 5th grade Basketball Tourna-ment at Garfield. Please contact Karen to say you’ll help, 216-470-4845.

Support: If your child is interested in participating in a summer music camp, or summer private lessons, now is the time to consider applying for a Ulah Louise Gilmore Scholarship. Booster Membership runs from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, but enrollment closes on March 31. (A minimum of a $10 individual member-ship enrollment is a criterion for our summer scholarship applicants. There is a Music Booster membership form in this newsletter for your convenience.)

Priority consideration is given to students whose families/parents/guardians have been active members of Lakewood Music Boosters. Active members participate as volunteers before concerts, support during music Contests, and involvement in other sponsored functions. Amount of scholarships given will depend on the number of applicants and the total funding available. This year we expect to give out at least $5,000 in schol-arships!

Scholarship forms will be available in April from school music teachers, in school newsletters, and from any LMB board member. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. A big part of the process is the enthusiasm and dedication of your child, and the recommendation of your child’s school music teacher.

Please note that we cannot reimburse parents for fees already paid for music programs. Also, to be fair to everyone, be aware that for very expensive programs, like Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Boosters can only provide a small percentage of the tuition.

Fun: Meeting with a great group of Music Boosters every month! The Nominating Committee has been formed to select candidates for next years’ Executive Board. Our next meeting is March 16 in the LHS band room at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome—I hope to see you there!

Congratulations Musicians! On Saturday, January 31, both the Greater Cleveland Instrumental Solo & Ensemble Contest and the OMEA Solo & Ensemble Adjudicate Event were held at Rocky River High School and North Ridgeville High School respectively. The Greater Cleveland event is just instrumental music students. The OMEA event is open to all music students in District 4 of OMEA. Lakewood students did exceedingly well at both events, with several students attending both venues that day.

You don’t have to be a Parent of a Senior to volunteer your time. JUNIOR parents, YOU’RE NEXT, so how do you make After-Prom 2010 better than After-Prom 2009 (if that’s possible!), you volunteer and experience first hand the trials and triumphs of After-Prom 2009. This event is sponsored by parents along with donations from businesses and senior class family contributions. If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation, please contact the After-Prom Committee General Chair, Diane Villnuve at 216-221-7409. YOU’RE WELCOME TO ATTEND OUR Next monthly full committee meeting
