The 116th Manitoba Horticultural
Association convention has come and
gone, and let me give a “HATS OFF”
to our hosts, The Garden Club of
Carman, for a job well done. Those of
us in attendance were treated to a
series of interesting presentations
from nine excellent speakers, and we
came away with some exciting ideas
to try in our own gardens if this cold
weather ever ends. As usual, the
banquet, with its unforgettable
musical performance from Tom & Lori
Neufeld, was one of the convention’s
highlights.
Our thanks go to those clubs that
provided coffee break snacks for the
convention, and our congratulations go
to the host club, The Garden Club of
Carman, which celebrated its 85th
birthday during the convention.
Greetings from your president
Congratulations!

MHS Award Winner
Congratulations to Jon
Blais, recipient of the
Manitoba Horticultural
Societies Award. Jon is a
student in the Greenspace
Management program at
Red River College of
Applied Arts, Science &
Technology. The Award of
$500 has been paid into
Jon’s student account.
Unfortunately, there were no
bids to host next year’s
convention. Hopefully we’ll have
some details to report in the
spring newsletter.
Louise Page, MHA President
Manitoba Horticultural Association Connected & Growing
February 2014
the many practical uses of
ground covers in home and public
landscapes. He suggested a
number of hardy and attractive
native plants for use in this
category.
Michel Touchette of Jeffries
Nurseries Ltd., Portage la Prairie
gave a very interesting history of
rose breeding in Canada. He
explained how the rose programs
from Morden and St. Jean were
salvaged by partners from the
industry. He showed some of
the new roses that will soon be
available from that genetic
material. A fun part of his
presentation was the guessing
contest to identify roses in the
Parkland and Explorer Series.
Feature speaker for the
convention was Stefan Fediuk,
Landscape Architect from the
City of Windsor. Stefan is well
known in Manitoba for his work
at Assiniboine Park and his
presentations at many club
meetings and workshops. His
first talk was "Extending the
Season - Colour in Spring and
Fall". His basic message was that
one has to plan plantings of
trees, shrubs, perennials, and
annuals to have a succession of
bloom. Look for some trees and
shrubs that bloom early or hold
leaves longer. Containers of
annuals and bulbs can be moved
in and out of the garden when
there is still risk of frost.
2014 MHA Annual Convention
was "Peony, Queen of the Herbs,
Rose of the North". He pointed
out that there are many reasons
to plant peonies - medicinal
properties, spectacular fragrant
blooms, attractive foliage, and
longevity. He talked about
propagation, planting, and culture
and showed photos of the best
old and new varieties. He
explained that the Itoh Peonies,
now appearing in garden
catalogues, are a cross between
herbaceous and tree peonies.
The knowledge that these
beauties are hardy in Zones 2
and 3 will surely entice
gardeners to try them.
June Minish, Chair of the MHA
Print Competition Committee,
presented a show of the winning
prints. Congratulations to all our
skilful photographers. Thanks to
June, Elly Garrett, and Nia
Massey of Selkirk and District
Horticultural Society for taking
care of the Print Competition.
Pastor Bob Pauls gave a very
appropriate invocation to begin
the Friday proceedings. A warm
welcome to Carman was
extended by Deputy Mayor June
Swanton. Then it was on to a
program packed with gardening
information.
Hugh Skinner, Skinner's
Nursery, Roblin, expanded the
definition of ground covers to
include grasses, shrubs, vines
and perennials. He demonstrated

Hats Off....
2014 is a landmark in the history
of the Garden Club of Carman.
To celebrate its 85th
anniversary, the club hosted the
116th Manitoba Horticultural
Association annual meeting,
January 30 to February 1, at the
Carman Community Hall. "Hats
Off" was the convention theme.
Table centres of fresh flowers in
vintage purses, and huge pastel
paper flowers on the stage,
complimented the wall display of
hats representing MHA clubs and
junior gardeners. Hats on loan
from Carman Museum were
arranged to represent every
decade in the town's history and
were cause for much reminiscing.
Participation in the decorated
hat contest was phenomenal.
After a long winter folks were
ready to don flowery hats and
pretend they were heading to
the garden. The prizes donated
by The Garden Club of Carman
were shepherd's crooks and
solar lights.
Thursday evenings' reception
commenced with welcoming
words from MHA President
Louise Page and Garden Club of
Carman President, Lani Pritchard.
It concluded with refreshments
and re-connecting with gardening
friends.
Ed Krueger of Driedger
Nurseries, Brandon was the
guest speaker and his subject
Page 3 of 8 Manitoba Horticultural Association
Annuals can be replaced in
containers to extend the fall
show. Use coloured fall
vegetables in your landscape plan.
Grasses give year round interest.
Stefan's second presentation
was "Creating Personal Paradise
in the Garden". He highlighted
famous sacred spaces he had
seen around the world. Then he
went on to describe design
factors to be considered in
creating one's own garden for
relaxation and meditation. The
four main elements were: spaces,
pathways, architectural
structures, and focal points, each
aptly illustrated by shots from
his travel album.
Louise Shachtay, teaches
gardening at R. B. Russell
Vocational High School in
Winnipeg. She was accompanied
by two students who spoke of
their experiences in her
landscaping program, and how it
started them on a career path.
Louise has worked with at risk
youth, the elderly, prison
inmates, persons with disabilities,
and hospital patients. As a form
of therapy, gardening is known to
contribute to emotional, spiritual,
intellectual, and physical well
being.
Julie Pritchard of The Floral
Fixx, Winnipeg put a new spin on
the flower arranging
demonstration. She set the
stage for a dinner party and
created the table centre, coffee
table, and bathroom
arrangements, and floral party
favours. Chair backs of burlap
and greenery completed the
elegant setting. Arrangers were
encouraged to use her ideas
with their own garden flowers
and greens.
Duayne Friesen was back to host
the Saturday morning Lawn and Garden Journal radio show live
from the convention floor. The
hour flew by as Duayne and his
panel of experts ( Hugh Skinner,
Stefan Fediuk, Monique
Rampton, Roger Brown) did their
best to solve a multitude of
gardening problems. We hope
the listeners at home enjoyed
the show as much as we did.
Portage la Prairie apiarist Shea
Doherty's presentation "For
the Love of Bees" was as much a
question and answer session as
Duayne's radio show. People
are fascinated by bees. Shea
explained the life cycle and
many of the intriguing habits of
these insects which are vital to
our own existence. He listed
the endless health and
commercial benefits of honey,
beeswax, pollen, and royal jelly.
For the beekeeper with vast
knowledge of his protégées,
there is infinite mystery in the
bee hive.
John Rempel, Manitoba Regional
Lily Society, has undertaken the
task of tracking the infamous
red lily beetle as it moves
across Manitoba. His aim is to
teach gardeners to recognize
this pest and to give them
strategies for keeping it at bay.
His best advice was to watch for
adults coming out of the soil in
early spring, destroy eggs on the
underside of lily leaves, and hand
pick the larvae off your lily
plants. Pretty much the same
plan of attack we've always used
for potato beetles!
Everyone expects to go home
from convention with a list of
exciting new plants to look for in
spring. Monique Rampton of
Morden Nurseries gave us the
scoop on trees, shrubs,
perennials, and a few annuals and
herbs for containers. She
emphasized that disease and
insect resistance was of special
concern when selecting new
trees and shrubs. An example is
the new Dakota Pillar Birch
which is resistant to birch borer.
Ask your convention delegate for
Monique's list before heading to
the garden centre
Business sessions at the AGM
dealt with the MHA budget,
financial statement, committee
reports, and the election of the
new board of directors. When
the deficit budget elicited
questions, board member Cathie
McFarlane, CMA, indicated that
she was preparing a full financial
analysis for the MHA to provide
direction for the future.
A vegetable contest was a lively
mixer for guests at each table
prior to the Friday evening
buffet banquet. Several
A tip of the hat to The Garden Club
of Carman for a welcoming and well
organized convention. It's obvious
that your club and the wider
community in Carman all pulled
together to make this event a big
success. We all departed for home
with well nourished bodies, minds,
and souls. A great winter getaway!

presentations followed dinner. Reg
Curle presented Hugh Skinner with
an Honorary Life Membership in the
MHA. Brent Hunter received the
Meritorious Service Award. The
citation was given by Roger Brown.
Brent Hunter presented Linda
Kavalench with a farewell gift from
the MHA. Friends in the MHA wish
Linda well in her new home in British
Columbia.
After dinner entertainment was
provided by Tom and Lori Neufeld,
AKA Lulu and the Tomcat, of Roland.
All enjoyed listening to a selection
of their own songs and old
favourites from days gone by.
Auctioneer Walter Scott kept up
the pace to sell off all the garden
gear and art generously donated by
the clubs for the Great Gardener's
Auction. The MHA sincerely
appreciates the time taken by club
members to select desirable items
for this annual fund raiser. This
year's auction netted $2,947.50.
Many thanks Walter for donating
your skill and time.
The Company Store was open for
business with a great selection of
merchandise. Garden hats, gloves,
and books, row markers, hand
weeders, tote bags, cannas, glads,
lilies, and succulents - something for
everyone. Sales at the Seed and
Magazine tables were steady all
weekend. Thanks to the individuals
who donated seeds, magazines, and
items for sale in the store. A big
thank you for canvassing for the
Sweet Pea Auction which raised
$865.00.

“A huge thank you to The Garden Club of
Carman for hosting the 2014 MHA Convention.”
The MHA board of directors, on
behalf of its member horticultural
societies and garden clubs would
like to thank the members of The
Garden Club of Carman for all
their help in hosting a very
successful convention. A special
thank you to Kathy Watson and
Paula Learmond, co-chairs of the
host committee for their tireless
efforts. Also many thanks to
Morden, Charleswood, St. James
and Miami Horticultural Societies
for providing delicious treats for
the coffee breaks. And we all
thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful
meals prepared by Barb Alarie of
the Deerhaunt Tree Plantation.
Everyone enjoyed the fund raising
activities and your support is very
much appreciated.
We also wish to extend our
appreciation to all of the speakers
for sharing their knowledge and
expertise and for contributing to
the success of the 2014 MHA
Convention.

In the November newsletter the
MHA board proposed that we try to
raise funds to support a
horticultural project through the
Tanzania Society for Agricultural
Education and Extension (TSAEE).
There was an immediate response
with a few donations arriving in the
mail and at the 2014 MHA
convention more generous donations
were made to this project. We are
pleased to announce that we have
surpassed our goal of $500 and the
total collected to date is $707.
The MHA plans to apply to the MCIC
for the maximum project funding
available of $5,000 by paying a 10%
levy of $500. Remaining donations
will go directly to Tanzania without
incurring any administration fees, to
support horticultural projects.
We are extremely grateful for your
donations to help youth in Tanzania
with their horticultural endeavours
and entrepreneurship projects. The
MHA is proud to support the TSAEE
and if you have not yet had the
opportunity to contribute and wish
to do so, please send your donation
to the MHA. You may request a tax
receipt for donations of $10 or
more. Please make cheques payable
to “MHA (TSAEE)”.
For more information on the TSAEE
project, please see the November
newsletter pages 4 and 8 or contact
