Possible sources for the WTE cycle come from: Industrial clients, Households, and basically Everywhere Common waste forms include: Municipal solid waste Green waste (yard trimmings) Construction/demolition Special waste Waste that is normally landfilled Slide 6 Where does it historically end? As an example, the Uwharrie Landfill: Has a daily permit for 3000 tons/day (on an annualized basis of 365 days) Receives, on average, 2400 tons per day Resulting in a life expectancy of 27 years At the ECE (aka Bertie County) Landfill: The daily permit is 1600 tons/day (annualized) With an average of 1300 tons/day And a life expectancy of 25 years Slide 7 Where can it end (Typical WTE facility) Covanta WTE facility located in Lorton, Virginia Daily limit = 3,000 tons Non-ferrous metal recovery Recycle 80 megawatts of electricity created daily Meets the power needs for over 80,000 homes. Only 6% of raw materials used in a typical manufacturing process end up in the product. 94% of raw material end up as a scrap or waste. After only 1 use, 80% of products are discarded. Within 6 weeks of the sale of goods, 99% of the original materials used become waste. Waste is created much faster than it can be reconstituted or recycled into useful resources.
