2nd Annual ‘Amazing World of Military Miniatures’ at the Virginia War Memorial, November 21, Richmond, VAThis event opens to the public at 10:00 and lasts until 1:00. Our setup begins at 9:00. We will be located in the Freedom Hall, the same as last year. Tables and chairs will be provided. The 3D printing folks from VCU will also be there alongside us ready to demonstrate the technology. Tom Allan, the gentlemen who donated all the minia-tures in the collection will be giving a presentation in the Reynolds Theater, probably around 10:30 about the collection and a new exhibit he is putting together for a muse-um in Philadelphia. We’ve been promised a tour of the artifacts not on display, which include unique firearms and uniforms. However, it cannot be confirmed because Jesse Smith, the curator is expecting his wife to deliver their third child around that time. We’ll have to see as we get closer. If Jesse is not available on the 21st we can set up another Saturday date for the tour.

October Demo: Tracks/wheels alignmentThe demo this month is not by a single person but many. All are invited to show us how you go about installing and getting your tracks and wheels straight. Kit wheels are particularly difficult. If you volunteer, please describe your steps or show us the tools that aid in your method.

AMPS 2016: Club DisplaysThe AMPS 2016 convention will be promoting local chapters by giving them a table to display/demonstrate anything they wish. There is no cost but pre-registration is required. The tables will be located alongside vendor tables for the duration of the convention. AMPS-CV will discuss whether we are interested in this opportunity.

September Meeting Demonstration: Sanding 101

Aaron has acquired many sanding tools that go beyond the basic sandpaper. Here are the notes from his demo:

• Open face silicon carbide sandpaper is used for auto body sanding, holds up when wet and does not clog. Find it at auto parts stores. Tamiya sandpaper is a like product.

• Emory boards for cosmetic purposes work well and come in various sizes and grits. You can make your own by gluing sandpaper to tongue depressors or Popsicle sticks. Label it with the grit by using a marking pen.

• The Step Sander is specifically made for the modeling hobby and excels at getting into corners and depressions. Different sizes, shapes and grits are available.

• Flex-i-grit sandpaper is commonly found in hobby product stores and has a flexible, waterproof backing.

• K&S Flex-i-grit also makes Sanding Needles that are cylindri-cal with pointed ends. Use these for tubing or hard-to-reach areas.

• Abrasive Cleaning Disc by Alpha Precision Abrasives that cleans/unclogs sanding tools.

• Sanding pads are foam backed and come in the finer grit range of 4000-12000.

• The Detail Sander has sanding film shaped as a belt and is movable when a fresh surface is needed. It is also colored to signify the grit.

• Flex-i-file makes both straight and bent handles for its flexi-ble sanding film. Comes in varying grits.

• Diamond needle files are designed for metals so use them carefully with styrene.

• Hobby Elements Molding Flash Sander

• Micromesh Polishing Stix

• Swizzle Stick sanders

The IPMS Air/Arm scale model convention/contest was held last Saturday. It was the first one in fourteen years for this chapter. The usual attractions were there including vendors, raffle and the contest/display tables. The theme was Science Fiction/Fantasy/Steampunk. At the entrance, we were greeted by a Star Wars Stormtrooper in full gear (except the sneakers) and a Sith Lord was also seen inside the arena wearing a baseball cap, no doubt a local adaptation.

The trophies were custom made by the chapter and awarded to modelers that placed 1st or second in their categories. There were no thirds or out of the box awards and the categories were not split. Some of us helped judge the categories. Scott Holtz, Mark Elder, Mike Trentadue and Glen Martin brought home awards. All in all, an enjoyable show with great weather and relaxed atmosphere. There are nice details on the model, it builds easily and it includes a photo-etched brass fret. The disappointment is that the bar armor is too thick for 1:48 scale.

There are seven panels for the hull and you have to be careful about alignment. The two types of wheels require mold seam cleaning and careful placement using the

instructions as a guide. The idler did not fit tightly to its station. The tracks are nice and snap together.

This is a new manufacturer to Bob and the initial impression is good. Here are just the basic hull pieces. The tracks are single-piece styrene runs that (supposedly) when

warmed are bent around the chassis.

Painting has begun due to the nature of the complex build. The wheels are resin replacements from DEF that attach to the axles after a quick drilling on the back. Unlike the kit tires, they are properly

bulged to match the real tires. Voyager Model makes two detailing sets, one of which provides the wire and tubing connectors for the missile.
