THE PASTOR’S CORNER

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The Sacred Scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given us.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace to you and peace. In her book, Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus, which I highly recommend, Sherry Weddell recalls a story about a song by Joan Osborne called “One of Us”. Maybe you remember that popular song from 1995 and this part of the refrain: “What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make His way home?” The story Sherry Weddell recalls is the story of a good friend, Mark, whose coworker was listening to that song on the radio and, looking thoughtful, said, “Wouldn’t that be a great idea for a story?” Mark said, “What?” She replied, “Suppose God became a human being. Wouldn’t that make a great story?” Mark’s coworker was a college-educated professional living and working in a major urban center of the United States, a nation ostensibly filled with Christians. Yet she was genuinely surprised when Mark explained to her that her “story idea” was in fact the Great Story that has captured minds and hearts for two thousand years and made its way to every corner of the globe. It is certainly the story that has dominated Western history. It is, of course, the story of Jesus. “Kerygma” is the word—used by the Church from the beginning—for the story of Jesus. How is it that the person in Sherry Weddell’s story did not know the kerygma? The answer is rather simple: nobody told her. Nobody was sent to tell her, so she did not hear it. Since she had never heard the story, she could not believe in Jesus. And because she did not believe in Jesus, she could never call upon him. This simple train of logic was first laid out for us by St. Paul in his letter to the Romans. Might I suggest we all look up and reflect on that passage from St. Paul, Romans 10:14-15? It lays out for us the basic plan we the Church have for evangelizing ourselves, our family and friends, our coworkers, and strangers on the street: Send women and men to tell the story of Jesus, so that everyone can hear about him, so that everyone can come to know and believe in him, so that everyone can call upon him by name. Simple, yes? And we know it’s a good plan because we’re still here two thousand years after the first disciples of Jesus began to use it. The problem we’ve had with this

Page 2

plan, resulting in too many stories like Sherry’s above, is that we haven’t been sending out anywhere near enough preachers, because we haven’t emphasized strongly enough that every baptized Catholic is called to preach the Gospel. As a result, we haven’t equipped all the baptized to preach. Too many of us baptized Catholics don’t know the story of Jesus well ourselves, so we’re not confident telling it. We need to come to know Jesus more deeply through a fresh telling of his story and share the story with others with renewed vigor. We have all we need and everything is in place. Thanks be to God who has given us a beautiful home at St. Raymond to explore the fascinating story of Jesus Christ and radiate the joy of the Gospel throughout Silicon Valley.

Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord! Fr. Christopher, O.P.

This Week’s Readings Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 Psalm 51:3-4, 12-13, 17, 19 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Luke 15:1-32

The Haven Family House Case Manager, who primarily works with veterans, requested our assistance again for her clients, a married couple in their mid-thirties with a one year old son. Both parents were in the Air Force. She is currently enrolled in college under the GI Bill; he just obtained employment at Berkeley Lab as a Junior Network Engineer. He also actively volunteers at the Veteran's Memorial. They had been living with family members for the last year, but moved to the shelter when that arrangement became difficult to sustain. They had been in the shelter for four months. They were very persistent in their housing search and it paid off when they finally found a two-bedroom apartment which rents for $1,950 per month. They needed $3,900 in order to move. The Veteran's program Next Step provided $1,950, they had $950, and we were happy to provide $1,000 so that they could secure the apartment. The mother receives $1,888 from V.A. and they receive $492 in food stamps. The father will be making $3,300 per month to start, so they will be able to maintain their rent without difficulty. Thank you for opening wide your hands to assist this family in need. "You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor." -Deuteronomy 15:11 Please make your donations payable to St. Raymond Homeless Family Fund. They may be placed in the collection basket, sent to the parish office or through the St. Raymond website (e-contributions).

Meditation on Today’s Readings

Tradition often refers to St Paul simply as the Apostle, and he is indeed a great apostle. But before his conversion Paul by his own admission was a blasphemer and an arrogant persecutor. He did everything he could to destroy the Church. But Christ came into the world to save sinners. He forgave Paul and sent him into the world to proclaim his praise. Scripture even calls him a chosen vessel. What about the Chosen People? As soon as Moses is away for a few days they worship a golden calf. Over and over they turn away from God, and each time he invites them back. Who draws near to Jesus and listens to him? Tax collectors and sinners. We are the sheep he carries on his shoulders, we are the coin he seeks so urgently, we are the son the Father runs out to meet. Whatever sins may be on our conscience, let us rise and go to our Father.

Volunteers Needed for Communion

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound

Jesus calls each of us to visit the sick: “I was sick and you visited me” (Matthew 25:31-46). Bringing Holy Communion to the sick is both a corporal and spiritual work of mercy. In this service, you minister to the whole person – body, mind, and soul. You serve as an ambassador of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), the Catholic Church, and St. Raymond Parish. In bringing the Body and Blood of our Lord to the sick, you are an instrument of evangelization by your actions of love, kindness, and comfort.

If you feel called to this ministry, please contact Ronnica in the parish office at 650-323-1755 or via email at [email protected] to set up a time for training in this rewarding ministry.

MARRIED COUPLES: Would you attend a seminar to enhance your job or to increase your salary? Why not give your marriage the same attention? Enhance your good marriage by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend! The next Marriage Encounter Weekend is November 11-13, 2016 at

Vallombrosa Center, Menlo Park. For more information visit our website at: sanjosewwme.org or contact Ken & Claranne at [email protected] or 408-782-1413.

Sacristan Needed “There prepare for us" (Mark 14:15). Jesus called his disciples to prepare a room for the Last Supper--the first celebration of Mass. Our parish St. Raymond needs a leader for Mass preparation. Called "Sacristan," this is a part-time, paid position at the heart of our

community, making the celebration of Mass possible. Training is of course available. The Sacristan leads set-up and clean-up for the 8:15 am daily Mass (with days off); for the Saturday 5:15 pm Vigil Mass; for Sunday Masses at 8 am, 10 am, and 6 pm (in short, all weekend Masses); and for all Masses on Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, and the Triduum. St. Raymond has a strong and vibrant Altar Society who will support the sacristan in every way. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Fr. Christopher at 650-323-1755 or [email protected]. Thank you!

Join the Team for Our Annual Fall Family Picnic

The Fall Family Picnic is coming up quickly! Volunteers are needed to help put together this year’s event on Sunday, September 25th.

Grab some friends & leave your contact info with Ronnica in the parish office at 650-323-1755 or [email protected] if you’re interested in organizing this super fun event for our parish. Thanks!

The Dominican Corner

Many Dominicans have been martyrs over the 800 years of the Order. This month we remember three groups: the martyrs of World War II, from the Nazi side, the Soviet side, and the Japanese side on September 6th; the martyrs of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's on September 22nd; and finally the martyrs of Japan from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries on September 28th. Whenever there has been persecution of Catholics, the Dominicans have been of their number. In the thirteenth century, Paul of Hungary and Bl. Sadoc and their companions were martyred by the Golden Horde's incursions into Central Europe. In the fourteenth century, Bl. Peter of Ruffia, Bl. Anthony of Pavonio, and Philip de Sceva were martyred for preaching the truths of the Catholic faith in northern Italy and Ethiopia. In the fifteenth century, following in Bl. Peter's and Anthony's footsteps was Bl. Bartholomew of Cerverio in Northern Italy. Also Bl. Anthony Neyrot was captured by Islamic pirates and killed for the faith. In the sixteenth century, St. John of Gorkum was killed by Dutch Protestant pirates and Bl. Adrian Fortesque, a relative of Anne Boleyn, was killed in England for the faith. Also the martyrs of Florida include Luis Cancer in this first century of exploration. In the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the martyrs of China, Japan and Vietnam all become witnesses to the faith. Tertullian in the second century has this famous saying, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christians." This was certainly true in Asia. Two of these Dominican martyrs were proto-martyrs, meaning they were the first for their countries. St. Francis de Capillas is the proto-martyr for China and St. Lorenzo Ruiz is the proto-martyr for the Philippines. The Thomasian martyrs are the name of the martyrs who were priests, professors and students of the University of Santo Tomás in Manila. There are 5 martyrs for Japan, 4 martyrs for Vietnam and 6 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. These are only the ones officially counted by the Church; there were untold others. In the twentieth century, the Dominican sisters Susanna and her companions were martyrs for the first modern genocide, that of the Armenians by the Turkish government. The only Dominican martyr nun is from the Spanish Civil War. Mother Catherine Abrikosov, the head of a thriving community of Dominican sisters, was arrested in 1923 in Communist Russia and died of cancer in a prison hospital in 1936. As we heard last week, Dominicans were martyrs under Nazi rule in Poland. Bishop Pierre Claverie, a Dominican who became bishop, was killed in Algeria by Muslim extremists in 1996. Continue to pray for all those who are persecuted for the faith and their persecutors.
