Annual Meeting a SuccessIncoming President’s Remarks Benita Felmus

When I was approached to be Pres-ident of TBE, I was flattered. My immediate thought was - no way! But, as I thought about it I realized that it’s an honor to be asked and I agreed to put my name forward.

My husband Ron and I moved here in August of 2000 with our 2 girls Samantha and Nicole. Both the girls were B’not Mitzvah’d right

here at Temple Beth-El. Prior to the "Felmi" moving to Richmond, I ran Product Devel-opment teams for Pitney Bowes in Shelton, CT. That job taught me that there is no “I” in team, and I am never the expert in any situation. Our congregation is a team. We have a professional team (Rabbi, Hazzan, Faith and Ramona) as well as a support team (Krista, Nor-ma, Josephine, and Chris) an executive committee made up of lay folks, each with expertise needed to run the Temple (President, VP, Finance, Personnel, Ritual, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, School Commit-tee and Facilities, plus Faith and Rabbi). My goal as president is to be the Coach, not the expert, not the all-knowing, but the facilitator of the group and to use our resources to the best of our ability. I’m

hoping that each member of the Executive Committee and the Board will be the eyes and ears of the Temple and support me in attending as many of the functions as we can. So if you don’t see me, you might see someone else there in support of our community. I have been involved with Beth-El since 2001. In addition to being a member of the Finance Committee (chairperson twice) since 2003, I’ve served as both Secretary and Treasurer of Sisterhood as well as Treasurer of TBE. I have participated on the Endowment and Personnel Committee, the Rabbi Search, two Executive Director Search Committees, and one of the Real Estate relocation commit-tees. I have acquired lots of experience over the last 16 years. However, I have not been intimately involved with the Temple for the last 12 months. I too am hearing the Visioning Committee’s report today for the first time. I am hoping to create a Vision for my term from the results of the Visioning Committee’s indepth research and the most recent One Community questionnaire. I look forward to working with them closely to look at the next opportunities for the Temple. Please join me in supporting this great organization – to make it everything we want it to be, to help create opportunities for all who are interested to actively participate, build leadership throughout the community, and celebrate many Holidays together.

Clockwise from top left: Ben Lewis and Benita Felmus; dessert reception; Frances Goldman receives the Unsung Hero award for her work on the Life and Legacy initiative (other recipients for this were Judy Crocker, Ron Felmus, and Franklin Wolf), Judy Gary receives the Unsung Hero award for her work on the Visioning Steering Committee; David and Geri Eisenberg receive the Unsung Hero award for their work on Casino Night.

Refugee Task Force Update The Safars are an Iraqi family from Baghdad and consist of two parents and four children ranging in age from 11 to 20. In Iraq, Hussein, the dad, was employed as an accountant. Jinan, the mom, was a well-educated stay-at-home parent. As conditions in Iraq deteriorated and simple day-to-day activities like walking down the street threatened personal safety, the family fled to Turkey. The Safars remained in Turkey for four long years, actively pursuing their dream to come to America. That dream was realized on April 25, 2017 when the Safar family arrived in Richmond. The family was brought here by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a resettlement agency with a State Department contract providing for specific goals and services to be accomplished with-in 90 days of arrival. Our Temple Beth-El Refugee Task Force is mentoring the family through the IRC’s direction. Initially, our Task Force prepared a beautiful apartment home. More recently, we have been busy with required health department appoint-ments, a bank visit, and grocery shopping. We have transported the adults to Learner’s Permit Classes taught in Arabic and will provide transportation to English classes. The IRC has provided financial management, cultural orientation, bus orientation and work placement. Hussein just started a job at Ellwood Thompson’s and the IRC is optimistic that employment is within reach for Jinan and the oldest daughter. The time we spend with the family is pure joy. Despite their hardships, these individuals are upbeat, friendly, warm and optimistic about their future in Richmond. We welcome all interested to become involved by reaching out to the family on weekends, providing transportation, keeping your eyes open for job opportunities, participating in English tutoring. And, who can get along in Richmond without a car? If you have a vehicle to donate, we know a family who will gladly take it off your hands. Please join us at our next meeting June 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Religious school.

One of the girls would like to learn guitar. If you play guitar, consider giving lessons to our refugee! Contact us!

Men's Club Turning PointExerpts from Speech given at the Annual Meeting by Michael Edelstein, former president and member for 25 years

The Men's Club is a vital part of the fabric that makes up the tapestry of what is Temple Beth-El. The reach of our efforts extends to all aspects of the Beth-El Community and beyond. We are a strong supporter and volunteer source for our CARITAS program. We build and take down the Temple Sukkahs during Sukkot. We do the physical work of painting the social hall, demolishing water soaked plaster board walls in the Kiddush Room, and installing glass brick windows. Our club members were major volunteers for our Casino Night spectacular, under the tremendous leadership of David and Geri Isenberg. We have provided funding to the Temple for special programming. Our softball team proudly and honorably represents our Temple in the Henrico County Church League spearheaded for more than two decades by my mentor, teacher, and friend Don Light. Our members pre-pare and serve Sunday brunches for special programs, including our own Sunday speaker series. The Men's Club over the years has sponsored social events open to the Temple community and beyond. Fishing trips, outings to see our local Richmond Kickers and Squirrels play, as well as going to Washington and Baltimore to see major league baseball. We have had night outings to local restaurants and breweries. However, the main goal of the Men's Club is - and has always been - the support of our Religious School and the children who attend. Our major programming has always been directed toward this endeavor. As we have done for many decades, in the last year we sponsored the opening of the school year festivities, the Chanukah latke party and blood drive, and the end of the school year picnic. We support the confirmation class. We work in the kitchen providing the food at the community Purim carnival. Along with the Sisterhood we present the Kiddush Cups and Candlesticks to our B'nai Mitzvah students. Now is the time to look to the future, and honestly there are concerns. We are proud that over 100 members of our Temple belong to the Men's Club. But realistically, almost all the programming and decisions of the Men's Club are made by a small group of men like myself - experienced and dedicated but with children far beyond the years of the Religious School. This is not healthy. An organization must be led by members who are an intimate part of the main group of people that the organization serves, and who closely understand the interests and needs of those served.

The current leadership has discussed time and time again why we have not been able to recruit new, younger leadership to the men's club. Maybe we don't have the proper understanding of our younger members' interests. Maybe we don't appreciate their time constraints. But our recruiting efforts have consist-ently been poor. The first thing we will be doing is changing our monthly meeting time from the current weekday evening to Sunday mornings during reli-gious school. Those who have children in this school can be available to join us. You can come. We need you. We all have one thing in common. And that is - we are all very busy. And we all do not have much free time, but this is important, because it involves our children. If we do not recruit new leadership to the Men's Club, our club will change. I don't believe for a second that the Men's Club will disband. But its goals and its programming may change. And that change could be significant. And that change may not be best for our temple - and that will be sad for our children. I ask-- I implore - all our members - especially young fathers - to join us. Right now reach out, email, leave a note at or call the temple office, see me or any active member of the Men's Club and ask how you can become involved - actively involved. Honestly, this should be an easy transition for a new group of leaders. We have a group of dedicated experienced members to assist you. We have a frame-work of programming to guide you. And we have money in our treasury to fund you. To paraphrase our 35th president - not of the Men's Club who happened to be the wonderful Bobby Siff - but of the United States - John F. Kennedy - "the torch must be passed to a new generation". When this happens - and I have no doubt that it will, - the Men's Club will remain vibrant and strong.

Intro to Conservative Judaism Led by special guest Zevi LowenbergThursday, June 8 7:30 - 9:00 PMat the Religious School 601 N. Parham Rd.

This is a stand-alone class which will examine the basics of Conserv-ative Judaism, its place in the halachik spectrum of day-to-day life, and will touch on the history of the movement. Finding our place in the broad picture of American Jewish life, we will work to examine where that place is now and how it has changed over time. This will be an open class, with far more discussion than frontal lecture.

Originally from Baltimore, 2d Lt. Ze’ev (Zevi) Lowenberg is a Chaplain for the US Air Force and is pursuing a master's degree in rabbinic ordination at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
