WE ASKED – YOU SAID – WE LISTENEDThank you to everyone who took time to respond to the survey that was sent out following the launch of In Our Hands. There was a great response and some really useful feedback. We have addressed some of the issues raised in this second issue but your comments, feedback and suggestions are always welcome. There is now a dedicated email address for you to send your comments, photographs and items for inclusion in the next issue (Feb 2016), [email protected]. Thank you also for the items sent in for inclusion in this issue, due to space constraints we haven’t been able to include everything but we will follow up items and include in future issues.

BEHAVIOUR CHANGE – IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT SAFETYDuring 2014 staff from across Kier were invited to take part in a number of surveys which looked at the safety culture within the business.

The resounding message that came back was that the ‘one size fits all’ approach to SHE wasn’t working. Tony Roscoe joined the SHE team as Behaviour Change Manager and together with Clare Davey they have been developing

a programme with different parts of the business, helping them to come up with solutions that suit the way that particular business operates.

Thirty-five willing volunteers from various Kier divisions including Facilities Maintenance; Living; Infrastructure; Utilities, Highways and Construction stepped forward to be trained as internal consultants. They meet monthly, decide on the problems that need fixing within their businesses and then work on how best to resolve them. There is no timetable, no limits as to what issues can be addressed and projects will be rolled out as they are

finalised. One group is putting together The Perfect Start – a guide to setting up a Kier site and another group is look to turn the traditional tool box talks into discussion based activities with which to engage staff and the supply chain. The overall aim of the Behaviour Change programme is help us get better at getting better.

In future issues of In Our Hands we will be reporting in more detail on the projects that are being worked on. If you have any queries about the programme or how you could become involved please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

SHE PERFORMANCE TO END OF SEPTEMBER Since the publication of Issue 1 in April ( figures in brackets in the table below), there has been a drop in the overall Kier UK AIR from 306 to 299. Slips trips and falls continue to be our biggest cause of RIDDOR injuries and the area where we need to challenge through our Visible Leadership Programme, our APR inspections and our behavioural change programme. The majority of these issues could be alleviated with a little more planning and time applied to the task. Some areas of the business had a number of incidents in August, predominantly as a result of the stretch on resources and supervision associated with the holiday period.

As we now move into a different time of the year with dark mornings and dark nights our risk profile is significantly changing, with driving being a key area of focus. To raise the profile of this a circular, “Autumn is Approaching “ was issued in September; could I ask that you refresh the issues raised in this circular with your teams in order we are prepared for the changing conditions ahead.

WELLBEING – WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT ?You may have noticed an increase in news items on Mykier about health and wellbeing and wondered what it was all about.

One of the targets of Vision 20:20 is to make health and lifestyle screening available to all employees. Kier has many employees with various wellbeing needs so initially the programme has launched with a different topic being highlighted each month and during that month articles with useful information will appear on Mykier.

Volunteers from around the business are going to be trained as Health Champions, they will

receive a nationally recognised qualification and be able to offer advice and signposting to colleagues who are interested in improving their health and wellbeing. Additionally members of the Health & Wellbeing team will be travelling around the country to offices and sites to see what support can be offered.

The Kier Benefits team have been asked to include health & wellbeing benefits amongst the other benefits already available to staff.

We all need to take time to look after ourselves a little bit better, so keep your eye on Mykier, the next topic may be of relevance to you and if you need information on a specific topic contact the Health and Wellbeing team who are based at Tempsford or contact [email protected]

GREEN APPLE AWARDS

The annual award ceremony will take place at the House of Commons on 16th November 2015 and, as in previous years, Kier will be well represented with seven projects up for consideration from the various divisions. There will be a full report on this event in the next issue when we find out whether we have bronze, silver or the prestigious gold awards. Full details of all the submissions will soon be made available as case studies within the Environmental section of Mykier/SHE.

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS, POSITIVE OUTCOMES AND PRACTICAL PROCESSESIn early 2015 the Kier Group launched its new strategy for a sustainable business – ‘Responsible business, positive outcomes’.

This strategy is designed to help Kier realise its ambitious growth plans and double in size by 2020.

Achieving this growth relies on everyone in the business being able to make a contribution, and all of our respective teams working together.

Kier’s Corporate Responsibility team (CR team), led by Alan Smith, managed the task of working with all of the Group support functions including Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), individual Business Units and a large number of our customers, to create a strategy that delivered on their expectations and would embrace growth and profit for the Group.

Working with SHE

The early stages of developing the strategy reviewed the business plans we had in place, and the processes we used in our management system to support them. In some places we found that our customers expected more of us, as a result our focus areas were extended and our targets stretched; e.g. wellbeing, diversity, carbon footprint and added social value.

These are the focus areas that relate specifically to our performance in health, safety, wellbeing and environment and have been incorporated into the Safety, Health & Environment Management System (SHEMS):

• an injury free work environment, with Zero accident incidence rate

• extending our wellbeing programme to employees and our supply chain

• five key commitments to reduce our environmental impact through carbon, water, waste and environmental incident reduction

• embracing biodiversity through protection of flora, fauna and their habitats

By putting them into our management system it gives really clear guidance for all our employees on how they can make a contribution.

Community

Further joint teamwork is planned with the SHE and CR Teams looking at how Kier can be a better neighbour and citizen in all Kier activities, both on our construction sites and our mobile workforce within Kier Services Business Units.

UNDERTAKING THE STAKEHOLDER REVIEW

INTRODUCING OHESKier now have in place a Group agreement with national spill response contractor OHES Environmental. If an environmental incident occurs on one of our sites OHES is able to provide advice, and where required practical help, through their 1-2-3 Spill Response division.

OHES are a multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy, which specialises in fuel and oil spillage clean-up and are an UKSpill Accredited Contractor. Their staff are highly experienced and many have worked previously for the environmental regulators.

In the event of an environmental incident, OHES are able to provide national coverage, 24 hours a day seven days a week; a site should call 0333 333 1123 – Stage 1. The call will be answered by an experienced incident adviser, who will assess the situation and provide appropriate advice, which is free. The adviser will determine if on-site assistance is required and, if so, a response team will be mobilised – Stage 2. The response team will take charge of the environmental incident and begin the clean-up – Stage 3.

Posters and information packs about this new service are being distributed across the business. Please contact your Environmental or SHE Manager for further details.

KIER STRATEGIC HIGHWAYS LEAD THE WAY IN REDUCING CARBONThe Carbon Trust Standard is an internationally recognised scheme which enables companies and organisations to demonstrate their success and commitment to reducing emissions.

In 2013, Kier Strategic Highways were the first Highways England service provider to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard. To achieve it they had to demonstrate that they were measuring emissions from the business, including electricity and diesel. To retain certification in 2015 they had to increase the scope of monitored emissions to include staff travel.

The source of emissions are shown in the pie graph:

In the re-certification they were able to demonstrate a 26.7% reduction in emissions, which compared very favourably to the 19.2% reduction from the next best organisation in the engineering sector.

Kier Strategic Highways are the first service provider in this sector to achieve and then retain the Carbon Trust Standard demonstrating that they are able to set themselves apart from their competitors and provide tangible evidence that we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions in the long-term.

MANAGING SHE – MIDDLE EASTERN STYLE Extreme temperatures of up to 50 Degrees; political and security unrest; poor standards of driving; limited understanding of safety.

Welcome to the world of SHE in the Middle East, where our challenges are very different to those in the UK. All of the above issues, the scale of projects, coupled with the client’s expectations and delivery timescales, make project delivery and SHE management an exciting and demanding business. Similar to Kier’s operations, Mouchel Consulting has projects primarily in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. We also have an office in Kuwait and a few legacy projects in Africa. Our principal role on site is supervision and this means that whilst we face the same hazards and risks, our exposure to them is quite different. The majority of our projects are infrastructure related, however we have recently completed an LPG Plant in Kuwait that achieved over 10 Million Man Hours without a lost time incident (LTI). We are also supervising the extension of container berths in Jeddah’s Red Sea Port that once complete will receive super container ships up to 400m long.

For all our projects the real work for the SHE Team is being on site, working with contractors and clients to promote and advise on improving safety. It is no big secret that the standards of safety, awareness and implementation across the Middle East is considerably lower than that of UK and is a far cry from international standards. Some might see that as a reason to stay away or leave well alone, however I see this as a challenge and an opportunity to make a difference. Good SHE management supports contractors and provides them with the knowledge and tools to work safer. It also helps Governments to see the need to raise current SHE standards and legislation. In the UAE federal laws have been established to provide a framework for safety, this sets a standard for other countries to follow.

This change in standards will take time and meanwhile our SHE and project teams need to concentrate on the reality, which is local contractors (especially in KSA) that have little or no understanding of safety or staff wellbeing. It takes time and patience to slowly change the perception of these companies, however after 10 years in the region I can look back and see that safety has gone from “Flip Flops and Inshalla” to “PPE and

Safety Officers”. Mouchel Consulting’s Engineers, Inspectors and Surveyors embrace our safety culture and consider it part and parcel of their daily responsibilities. It is the SHE team’s job to support our teams, educate contractors and influence clients so all see the benefits that better safety will bring to their organisations.

ALL CHANGE AT PORT TALBOT PARKWAY Kier Rail are currently undertaking a refurbishment of Port Talbot Parkway Station. This £10m Design and Build project consists of replacing the existing staff and public platform buildings; reconstructing the existing car park forecourts; installing two pedestrian footbridges that link the north and south car parks to the station platform and constructing a new elevated ticket hall and passenger waiting area. The footbridges and ticket hall are significant steel structures architecturally designed to reflect Port Talbot’s manufacturing history. The 212 tonne ticket hall was lifted in using a 1200 tonne mobile crane during a railway possession on Saturday night 26th September. 280 bolts were installed to fix the structure into position and the possession was handed back an hour early following a successful night’s work. The team will be out again on Saturday 3rd of October to install the footbridges.

BIODIVERSITY ENHANCEMENTImproving the biodiversity around our sites and offices is easily done and can bring benefits to the environment even if only for a short while. What can you do in your workplace?

KIER HIGHWAYS – A ROAD CLOSURE TOOLKIT Anyone who drives or rides on our roads cannot be unaware of the dangers that are faced by those who have to carry out road maintenance.

Following a number of incidents and near misses Kier Highways has put together a road closure toolkit which is designed to help Kier staff, working on the highway. This toolkit is available in electronic or print format through Mykier and will be of particular use to anyone who needs to carry out lane closures or work on the highway, even construction teams.

http://mykier/teams/she/Documents/Road%20Closure%20Toolkit-%20Combined.pdf#search=road%20closure%20toolkit

Highways England has produced a toolkit which covers a huge range of topics which has some really useful information.

THE KIER PPE FORUMKier recognises that it is important to ensure that the quality and range of PPE that we provide to our workforce is suitable and sufficient for the diverse range of work activities that we undertake.

The PPE Forum is made up of members of the SHE team from the various divisions and meets regularly to undertake this review and to consider new items for inclusion. Your comments and feedback are an important part of this review process. If you are having a problem with an item of PPE that has been provided through DCC, please report this to your SHE manager in the first instance.

PLAYING A KEY ROLE IN CONSERVATIONAn important part of highways maintenance is the cutting of the vegetation that sits alongside our road network. Doing that sort of work you never know what you are going to find and in September Kier received a report that Field Eryngo had been seen growing alongside the A34.

This plant was last seen in Hampshire in the 1970s and is classed as critically endangered in the UK by the Botanical Society of the British Isles.

Field Eryngo was recorded from Sutton Scotney back in 1920 however the population was destroyed by the construction of the A34. The plant recently found is therefore a native specimen arising from a dormant root which is likely to have been re-activated by soil disturbance associated with the highway drainage system.

Field Eryngo is fully protected by Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 making it illegal to destroy, dig or collect the plant.

Unfortunately this plant is located within an area regularly cut for maintenance and is thus at high risk of damage particularly during the summer months when it is flowering.

A site visit was conducted with members from the Hampshire records office and Mervyn Brown an expert in Field Eryngo. Seeds from the plant were collected for transfer to the Millennium Seed Bank and the plant was inspected and found to be a strong specimen which is likely to reappear next year. A protection zone has been set up to protect the plant as to remove it would risk destroying it.
