  • Jim, Jim and You is the moniker for a newprogram dedicated to exposing EV soundcontractors to recent EV loudspeakerofferings. The Jims refer to Jim Long, director of strategic projects, and Jim Tassey, director of the technical services group.Theyou refers to your local manufacturer'srepresentative. Intended to not only inform, the programs name connotes the kind ofintimate and grassroots approach theseindustry renowned factory experts haveadopted. Thus, if you are an EV pro soundcontractor, one of the Jim's and the localrep are coming to your place of businesssoon with a van or two full of speakers, processing and power amps ready to demoand talk about whatever you havent heardyet. The program includes productpositioning as well as the rationalebehind specific engineering and designchoices made to achieve desired product performance.

When asked why there is a need for thiskind of customer interaction, Jim Longexplained,Tassey and I believe that EV doesa fine job of exposing our products at tradeshows like the NSCA Expo.We delivercarefully honed presentations and effectivedemonstrations outlining EVs key benefitsto 50-60 people, several times a day. Butcompared to our contractor base, manyimportant customers are missed. While EVsmarketing efforts traditionally includemailings and on-site rep demos, the Jim, Jimand You program is a way to make this amuch more concentrated process exposing multiple product lines andmarrying the expertise of the factory manwith that of the local rep.

Most demos will be conducted at thecontractors place of business the optimalplace to involve the most people and oftenthe place where the contractor evaluates anew product before a final decision is made.As for the current schedule of the Jim, Jimand You program, Long explained how he'shad the opportunity to accumulate someserious frequent-flyer miles in the past year.I dont expect to slow down now. Imtrying to be on the road nearly all the time.Upcoming visits include stops in Florida,Ohio, western Pennsylvania, Atlanta,Nashville, Kansas City and St. Louis.

A typical road presentation includesexamples of EVs X-Array Xi-Series,FRX series, FRi series and the EVI VariIntense systems. If you would like the Jim,Jim and You show at your contracting placeof business, please contact your local EV

sales representative.Your sales rep willnotify the regional manager and makearrangements to have you placed on Jim &Jims travel itinerary. Jim & Jim look forwardto the new year and the inherent challengesa program of this magnitude presents.

station, and you have paging overbackground music; up to 24 zones! IFBscan have multiple priorities, allowing certainstations to interrupt other interruptingstations, just the ticket for emergency orhigher priority announcements!

Special Lists allow a single button to call anentire group of outputs a perfect solutionto zone paging.

Software control of individual crosspointlevel controls is available for setting relativevolumes for listening to different sources in abroadcast application; for professional soundapplications, this feature turns ZEUS into acomplete 24 x 24 mixing matrix!

GPI (General Purpose Interface) inputs andoutputs can EASILY be programmed toallow certain events to trigger other events. For example, a contact closure from a PBXcan be connected to a GPI input to activatea specific input fed from a chime generator,to broadcast an alert of the incoming call.AGPI output can be connected to a 2-wayradio transmitter to automatically activatethe transmitter anytime that someone callsthe transmitter via their panel.

ZEUS has provisions for RS-232 control viacommand line protocol, a high levellanguage with very simple commands forcontrolling and querying the status of thesystem. Add an AMX or Crestron controlsystem, and you have one touch access toany function, from creating conferences toreconfiguring whole setups for roomcombining to simple paging.

ZEUS is the only intercom on the marketwith UPL (User Programmable Language).UPL allows the user or contractor to createvery complex control schemes using verysimple pull down menus in Windows. UPLcan act upon changes of any key status, GPIstatus, time of day, or crosspoint status tochange setup of the intercom, activate GPIoutputs, adjust levels, or re-route signals all in real-time, without operator intervention!

ZEUS comes with a wide variety of userpanels to meet every need. From low cost4 button desktop units perfect for paging, to32 button panels for dispatch to level controlpanels for matrix mixing, any function canbe quickly and easily implemented.

One of the newer intercom products fromTelex is the ZEUS Matrix Intercom System.Similar to the established ADAM in manyways, the low price, and high performanceof the unit allow it to be used in manysituations where matrix intercom has notbeen practical in the past.

Zeus is a 24 port matrix, meaning thatthere are 24 inputs and 24 outputs availablefor balanced analog audio. 20 bit, 44.1 kHzconverters are used for input and output, typically yielding in excess of 90 dBdynamic range from 20 Hz-19.5 kHz.Routing of professional quality audio signalsfor sound reinforcement, paging, andtraditional communications are all possiblewithin the same matrix.

To fully explore some of the possibilities, wewill need to translate some broadcastspecific terms into concepts more commonto professional sound. IFB (Interrupted FoldBack) is used in broadcast applications totemporarily interrupt (or duck by a presetlevel) a program feed with cues from adirector. Replace the program feed withmusic, replace the director with a paging

What is the real difference inmicrophone magnets?

There are several major families of permanentmagnet materials used in microphones today. They range from ferrite, which is low costand low energy, to rare earth materials thatare high cost and high energy. Many factorsaffect the choice of magnetic materials:resistance to demagnetization, operatingtemperature, brittleness, magnetic strength, and cost. The latter two are mostimportant in the development of MImicrophones.

Materials such as Alnico (aluminum, nickel, cobalt, and iron) and

ENGINEERING Q & A: ED PLETSCH ON MICROPHONE MAGNETS

What makes Neodymium a choice materialin dynamic microphones?

It relates directly to the efficiency of theelectromagnetic system in the microphones.Thegreater the efficiency, the greater the output for agiven input. Why is this an advantage? Picturetwo mics side by side, one is 4 dB hotter than theother. If you want the same output from each mic,you will reduce the gain at the mixer for the hottermic. Since the sensitivity is dropped via the mixer, the noise level of the hotter mic drops as well.Thistranslates to improved signal to noise ratio over theless sensitive mic.

Alternatively, you can achieve the same sensitivity asan Alnico or Ferrite magnet with a smallerNeodymium magnet. So, when size is an issue,Neodymium also has an advantage.

    Material Relative Cost Magnetic Strength

    Neodymium Iron Boron High High

    Alnico Moderate Moderate

    Ceramic/Ferrite Low Low

Ferrite/Ceramic (iron oxide), were developedand gained popularity in the 1940s and1950s, respectively. The high performanceNeodymium Iron Boron permanentmagnets were developed and becamecommercially available in themid-1980s.The table below contrasts theimportant characteristics of the three majormagnet materials.
