B Norfolk Botanical Garden
from the president“It’s a team effort.”
You’ll hear me say this every time someone compliments us about our collective successes over the past year at NBG, of which many are highlighted in this Annual Report. For instance, daily admissions were up 22% over last year, while Million Bulb Walk and Dominion Energy Garden of Lights were up a collective 31%.
This team I speak of so proudly is comprised of nearly 100 employees, hundreds of volunteers from the community, and thousands of members and donors. I’d like in particular to acknowledge the volunteer committees who help the professional staff at NBG deliver an outstanding product seven days a week, year-round to over 400,000 visitors. These committees work with our volunteer Board of Directors and staff to ensure the highest levels of professional nonprofit management and horticultural excellence are maintained and showcased at NBG. Did you know we are an accredited botanical garden by the American Alliance of Museums? Only 3% of botanical gardens nationwide achieve this accreditation, a testament to the quality and hard work of our team.
The team here is truly talented, dedicated and diverse and includes our employees, volunteers, and most importantly, you—our members and donors. Without your support, we could not accomplish what we do. I gratefully thank all of you who donate time and treasure to our worthy cause. You make a difference!
Another important part of the team success here is your unrestricted gift to our Annual Fund. These gifts allow us to do important work and provide us the opportunity to address infrastructure repairs, damage to the plant collections due to weather, purchase needed tools and supplies and even expand educational opportunities by adding capacity in our robust youth and adult programs. For your convenience, we’ve included an envelope in this report. Thank you for your contributions and for being on the team here at truly one of the best gardens in the world.

Weddings & Corporate EventsNorfolk Botanical Garden continues to be the premier wedding and event venue for Coastal Virginia. The events team had another record-breaking year, bringing in nearly $450,000 in revenue from 121 weddings, corporate and social events. This translates to a 41% revenue increase over the previous fiscal year, coming in 23% above projected revenue goals. The Wedding and Events Team continues to strengthen ties within the community by working with locally owned and operated event industry partners and small business enterprises, while expanding the Garden’s reach with several destination weddings. The Garden welcomed more than 10,400 wedding and event guests during the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
Signature EventsFiscal year 2016 - 2017 was a banner year for events. The Butterfly Festival and the Honeybee Festival both had record attendance, at over 2,700 visitors each. O’Connor Brewing co-hosted a dinner in the O’Connor Grain & Hop Garden for 200 guests, many of whom had never visited the Garden. Million Bulb Walk attracted 26,834 visitors, that is more than a 30% increase since 2015! The Dominion Energy Garden of Lights once again topped the previous record for attendance and revenue. Four High School Regattas brought in over 3,800 visitors. Suds & Buds sold out, bringing record attendance and donations for NBG and our partners, Norfolk Rotary Club and Project Healing Waters. Despite the weather, the annual Spring Plant Sale was very successful, selling out of many plant varieties. The National Daylily Society Convention was held in Norfolk, and their visits to the Garden brought hundreds of Daylily enthusiasts from all over the country to tour our Daylily beds. Our first ever Barks & Brews event brought 2,500 people and more than 300 furry canines to the Garden.
Visitor Services & MembershipPlants are not the only thing growing at Norfolk Botanical Garden. 2016-2017 experienced an unprecedented level of growth in community support through daily admission, annual giving and Garden membership. Daily gate admission this past year grew 21 % with more than 260,000 paid guests. In addition, over 4,000 families took advantage of our participation in the American Horticultural Society Reciprocal Garden Program and visited the Garden for the first time. Our Garden Patron annual giving program has grown to more than 250 families. And most exciting, 3,500 new families joined the Garden membership family this past year.
Thank YouYou have made an incredible difference in helping this Garden flourish. Donors like you help us connect with local communities, provide educational programs for children & adults, and inspire environmental stewardship. We couldn’t do it without your support!

Environmental StewardshipSustainability is not just a hot buzzword to Norfolk Botanical Garden, it’s an initiative that drives what we do and shapes our mission. Creating the new position of Director of Environmental Engagement & Outreach formalized the Garden’s commitment to advancing NBG’s Strategic Plan centered on environmental stewardship. One of the first tangible improvements was the installation of six bottle refill stations throughout the property. As of the end of June, more than 40,000 plastic water bottles have been saved from the landfill. Other expansions include improved recycling options for our staff and visitors, yielding nearly 737 pounds of recycled material each week.
HorticultureRecycling doesn’t stop at office supplies and aluminum cans. All healthy herbaceous garden debris is composted on-site, a practice which generates around 75 cubic yards of compost a year. For years, we have been re-purposing wood debris from the tree companies we employ. This practice, while also preventing unnecessary material from ending up in the landfill, provides the Garden with a free and sustainable source of mulch. Last October, Hurricane Matthew’s wrath left 40 trees down in the Garden. The clean-up generated a significant amount of woody debris that was ground into mulch for use on trails while the trunks were re-purposed as tree rings for the Tree Trek Trail area of the Enchanted Forest.

35 gallonsof distilled water are collected each week from dehumidifiers and used to water our carnivorous plant containers in WOW.
75 cu. yds.of compost collected per year... that’s more than 15,000 gallons!
40,000+bottles saved from the landfill. U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles. (thewaterproject.org)
Our Horticulture Department is ever mindful of their impact on the environment and demonstrate excellent cultural practices when it comes to using chemical controls. We have taken a formal stance on banning the use of neonicotinoids based on concern with the harmful impact its use has on beneficial insects like bees. Two years ago, we made several significant changes to our use of Glyphosate, which led to a 26% reduction of its usage. This past year, with continued diligence, we saw a 7% reduction compared to last year’s figure. We are utilizing a vinegar-based weed control around our Visitor Center as part of the general maintenance regime. Our preference is to use formulations for pest control such as horticultural oil and soap and alcohol mixtures whenever possible, especially in native sensitive areas.
Green EnergyOur Facilities Department is always looking for ways to improve energy efficiency and conservation. The necessary replacement of the HVAC units serving Baker Hall and the Visitor’s Center presented an opportunity to improve efficiency and environmental responsibility. These new two-stage units are designed to reduce the consumption of electricity. Automation of the control systems has been optimized in order to meet the comfort needs of room occupants and reduce run times to a minimum. Energy conservation actually started a while back when we switched from incandescent light bulbs to LED bulbs to light our DGOL displays. Did you know that switching the bulbs on just our runway lights yielded a savings of nearly $500.00 a night? Nearly 100% of the bulbs used in our holiday display are LED.

Adult EducationThe Adult Education Department provides guests with unique opportunities to learn and explore the Garden. Our goal is to have class participants out in the Garden as much as possible. Last year, we offered more than 250 programs and had nearly 3,000 class participants. Guests enjoyed a variety of programs – Garden Walk & Talks with our knowledgeable Horticulturists, guided kayak tours on Lake Whitehurst, creative garden art workshops, Floral Design and wildcrafting to name a few.
Volunteering is another great opportunity to learn more from our experienced staff and get involved. Whether you want to work alongside one of our horticulturists or participate in one of our many events, volunteers make a huge difference. A total of 1,033 volunteers contributed more than 9,000 hours, and according to Independent Sector, that is a value of $217,260. That is a huge savings to the Garden. The new addition of Volunteer Hub, an online database, makes the sign in and tracking of service hours much easier for us and the volunteers.
Children’s Programs The World of Wonders Children’s Garden spent its tenth year as THE place for kids to see the ways that plants play a role in their lives. Learning in the Garden happens year round. This school year, over 7,550 children and school teachers visited the Garden on field trips with Youth Educator Guided tours. These tours, aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, gave children the opportunity for a hands-on learning experience. Over 900 of the students who attended these field trips received full scholarships utilizing the Day of Nature donor funds. During summer months, over 1,700 children and their chaperons visited the Children’s Garden from their day care centers, summer camps and other programs.
OutreachSeveral outreach opportunities presented themselves this past year giving our staff the opportunity to lend their expertise and support, all while making a positive impact on the environment. Noted collaborations include our work with Teens With a Purpose, Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve and Chesapeake Arboretum. All in all, the Garden had a presence at 24 fairs and expos and staff gave over 25 educational presentations and tours to a variety of gardens clubs, special interest groups, professional organizations, schools and universities. This past winter, educators visited Norfolk Public Schools classrooms for grant-funded educational outreaches for over 1,100 students.

Living LandscapesThis past year has been one of renovation, preservation, transformation, and education in our Horticulture department. With several major ongoing projects affecting some of the Garden’s iconic structures, such as the renovation of the Administration Building, NATO Tower, and our Boat Basin, we have tried to minimize any plant losses in those areas. Prior to construction we carefully assessed the plants and either had them transplanted, or took cuttings to grow in our nursery for later replanting. In our Tropical Display House the courtyard garden, which for years had been hidden by a wooden deck, was re-opened and planted with a variety of tropical and succulent plants, all presided over by a unique faux bois tree created by local artist, Diane Husson. This sunken alcove creates the perfect spot to take in the serenity of the lush surroundings. Just outside of the house, our Japanese Garden now has a dedicated Horticulturist, and it is receiving a much deserved, but careful renovation.
Transformations have also taken place in the way we manage our stewardship procedures. Perhaps the most dramatic change occurred in the Flowering Arboretum, where much of the turf has been converted to meadows of native grasses and wildflowers. These areas not only look more interesting, but they also attract a host of native insects, birds, and other wildlife. Although we will continue to plant a variety of annuals throughout the garden, we will replace them where possible with more long-lived, sustainable plants. The Circle Garden has been converted from an annual garden into a Southern garden of year-round interest. In the Bristow Butterfly Garden we have also been adding more butterfly-attracting perennials and planting fewer annuals. Here you may also notice that we have begun renovating the Butterfly Maze that was once home to many invasive species, into a maze of native ornamental grasses.
Preserving the PastAll of the aforementioned changes have been accomplished while the number of events at the Garden and the people attending them have reached an all-time high. This success has required a coordinated balancing act between current operations and expansion, while continuing to meet obligations to our members. As we plan for the future, consideration is given to preserving the old while adding the new. The repairs to Cobblestone Bridge are an example of this balance. As a major artery in the Garden and part of the Dominion Energy Garden of Lights route, the bridge needs to continue to fill its role as we develop the plans for exciting future changes.
Though the restoration of the iconic Administration Building started in May, the planning and architectural design has been a year in the making. Since renowned Norfolk architect Vernon Moore designed the building in the early 1960s, it was imperative to celebrate and honor this part of the Garden’s history. The result of this design will provide the Garden with an updated structure that retains its mid-century modern style while offering 21st -century amenities. The new interior will have a large open auditorium that can be used for educational programs or as a rental venue. It will also feature a restored Rotunda and additional office spaces. Each area of the restoration plan has been scrutinized for ways to maximize energy efficiency and remain within budget.
This past year we also took on the largest canal bulkhead repair to date. A major focus of the decision-making process for this project was to integrate the repair plan with future work plan schemes to prevent having to redo work along the canals as future projects are completed.

9Annual Report 2016/2017
The Garden has been fortunate over the years to have many generous donors who were as passionate about our mission as we are. These donors provided much-needed funds to support operating costs and to establish an endowment that will generate income in perpetuity. As a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, the Garden receives revenue through program fees, admissions, memberships, rentals, donations, grants, and endowment income. The Garden’s endowment is managed by a separate foundation and provides annual income for specific purposes. The Kaufman Hydrangea Garden, Hofheimer Camellia Garden, Moses Ezekiel Statues, and Baker Hall are four examples of items supported by endowment income.
A large portion of the endowment funds for the Garden were made possible by the generosity of two people, Isaac M. “Junie” Baker, Jr. and Sarah Lee Kirby Baker. This remarkable couple provided the Garden with a gift that secured its future for generations to come. As you explore the Garden, you will see several areas that honor them: Baker Hall, the Sarah Lee Baker Perennial Garden, and Baker Overlook which was constructed and named after them to honor the spot where Mr. Baker proposed to Ms. Kirby.
The Bakers’ connection to the Garden began many years ago. In order to help visitors deepen their connection, the Bakers established the Baker Fund Endowment to provide for Baker Hall and ongoing programs at the Garden. Sterling Heller says she was their “adopted” niece and speaks fondly of the Bakers. She remembers their dedication to the community and the Garden. She attended the grand opening of Baker Hall in 1996 and was happy to see them honored in such a way. She says that Mrs. Baker did what she did for the Garden “out of love.”
The Bakers were generous to the Garden because they believed in our mission. Both were community-minded and worked hard to help Norfolk thrive. What a beautiful legacy.
Please contact Cathy Fitzgerald to see how you can create your legacy at the Garden. Call (757) 441-5830, ext. 319 or email [email protected] to begin.
