4-H ROLLER SKATING PARTY

Join us for a FREE afternoon of roller skating for the family at Jewels Skate Country, Sunday, November 18. All 4-H families and families interested in joining 4-H are welcome to attend the event from 4:30-6:30 p.m. There will be information on how to join 4-H for new families. Please invite friends and families that may be interested in joining 4-H but haven't made the decision yet! The skate party is just one of the fun things we do in 4-H through the year!

Club Highlights

To celebrate National 4-H week, County Council members visited 4th grade classrooms to share what 4-H is and how to join. Members of the Decorah Chiefs and Washington Prairie Peppers displayed projects and posters in downtown businesses in Decorah. Bloomfield 4-H promoted with posters on the school bus. Many 4-H’ers across the county wore their 4-H shirts on Wednesday too!

DAIRY JUDGING TEAM

The Winneshiek County 4-H Dairy judging team recently competed in the National 4-H Dairy judging contest in Madison Wisconsin during World Dairy Expo. The Winneshiek County team advanced as the top team after competing at the Iowa State Fair. Team members include, Blake Courtney, Brooke Courtney, Jessica Schmitt and Emily Carloan. They had worked on extra judging workouts since winning the competition at the Iowa State Fair. The largest percentage of their practices took place on Saturdays in late August and September. They worked jointly with the team from Iowa State University traveling to dairy farms across Northeast Iowa. The team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin on September 29th and participated in numerous practices and farm tours that were organized for the contestants. They toured the Hoard's Dairyman farm, along with the National Dairy Shrine Museum and then traveled to Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin to tour the Nasco facility. The contest was held on Monday October 1st. With all participants placing 10 classes of dairy cattle and then providing oral reason on five of the classes they placed. Their placings are then compared to the official judges places and the scores are tallied. Contestants compete as teams and individuals. This year’s team placed 11th as a team out of 34 teams. Along with this they placed third as a team in the Jersey breed and Blake Courtney was recog-nized as third high individual in the Jersey breed. Blake Courtney was also recognized as eighth place high partici-pant in the contest earning him All-American recognition in this years contest. The team was guided by coaches Kaitlin Kempel and Jess Rediske, and guidance from Scott Courtney.
