On November 18, the universal Church will recognize the World Day of the Poor, the same weekend as our annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the national, anti-poverty campaign of the U.S. bishops. CCHD has been an immeasurable blessing for thousands in our Archdiocese over the years. Just this past year, the agencies funded by CCHD have empowered more than 2,500 low-income people to break the cycle of poverty through such feats as finding jobs, responsibly reentering society after prison, educating youth, and securing decent housing and public services for their communities. Archbishop Dennis Schnurr appeals to the faithful this year: “Through the grants we make to well-vetted organizations, CCHD uniquely empowers those in poverty to identify their own needs and to become their own agents of positive change.” Please prayerfully and generously consider how you will give on Collection Weekend, Nov. 17-18. Your dollars are making real change!

Dear Holy Rosary and St. Patrick Parishioners,

I hope all is well! It’s hard to believe the Fall semester is already halfway over. Life is going well at Saint Meinrad. This semester I have five classes. There are 115 seminarians from 30 dioceses across the country and 9 religious communities. There are also a number of international students from 15 countries. It gives me a wider view of the Church on the national and international level. The grounds are very beautiful around here. On Wednesdays we have ministry assignments and I have been placed in Jeffersonville, IN which is right across the river from Louisville, KY. The pastor has me teaching 7th grade Confirmation prep in the afternoon and leading a Bible Study on the Prophets in the evening. Always know of my prayers and I hope to be in town soon! Pray for me.

Sincerely,

Michael Mazzei

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR My trip to Italy was amazing! We had beautiful weather and a great group of pilgrims. Everything went surprisingly smooth. And the sights we saw: lots of cliff in Sorrento; deep blue water on a boat to Capri Island; high mountains at Bagnoreggio and at the shrine to St. Michael the Archangel, with Mass in a cave there; and bright, warm sunshine in St. Peter’s Square where we greeted Pope Francis as he drove by in his popemobile.

As I said before, I love Italy. And that love was confirmed during my latest stay there. So many churches and shrines; so much good food; so much good wine! But, so much traffic; and so much noise; and so much walking! It was a grueling trip I must say, but well worth it. However, it is a different country and a very different culture. Coming back to the States is a great relief. The first thing I did in the airport in Atlanta was get a cheeseburger and fries. Boy, did that hit the spot!

Italy is definitely a tourist country. They are mainly religious tourists, which has its good points and its bad. There is a certain amount of pushing and crowding near the holy sites. Everybody wants to get as close as they can. And there seems to always be a clamor for buying religious souvenirs. Many forget to be Christian in those moments. This is the case especially in Rome and to some extent in Sorrento and Capri (mainly due to the cramped quarters in these regions.) Rome is just crowded and messy. But if you go in to the little towns like Pietrelcina (St. Padre Pio’s hometown) or Lanciano (home of a Eucharistic Miracle), especially right after lunch it is as quiet as New Knoxville. I’m glad we got to some of these small towns in Italy.

The most impressive thing I saw during this trip was the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano. I had never been there before. We had Mass in a chapel behind the Miraculous Host and Chalice, with windows behind our altar through which you could see it. Father Martin Fox (of St. Remy in Russia, who as with us on our trip) gave a great homily. The line that stuck out to me was when he shouted out, “What more do we need to believe in the Eucharist?!” The miracle was right before our eyes. Bread and wine becoming real flesh and blood. Heart muscle. Type AB blood…universal…the same as the on the Shroud of Turin. It was amazing. I hope to go back again.

On Sunday, November 11th, the Maria Stein Shrine of the Holy Relics invites you to “meet the new neighbors”! Relics are not easy to acquire when one uses the proper, reputable channels and it's been 4 years since a new one has been added to the Shrine collection. St. Andre Bessette, St. Marianne Cope, BIessed Francis Xavier Seelos, BIessed Solanus Casey and St. Pope John Paul II will officially be welcomed to the Relic Chapel collection of Saints! This family-friendly event will begin at 1:00pm with games and crafts on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Saint inspired snacks and appetizers will be available in the Gathering Space on the 1st floor. Then, at 3:00pm, there will be a special prayer service and relic veneration.

The Mercy Corner Corporal Work of Mercy: Clothe the Naked

The Church’s love for the poor is inspired by the Beatitudes, Found in Matthew’s Gospel. Jesus gave great attention to the poor, showing His great love for all.

Make an action plan for your family: We can pick a pumpkin and/or leaf from the Giving Tree and give to those in need.

Practice Virtue – Be loving. St. John the Apostle is our model of love this month. One way we show our love is by showing our gratitude always, but especially in the month of November. Take a minute each day to think of the gifts you have been given and lovingly show your gratitude. Tractor practice at the Frankenberg Farm with Pre-K students was a big hit! Mrs. Gossard and Mrs. Baumer took both Pre-K classes to the Steve and Kathy Frankenberg farm where they learned about the robotic milking of cows, what milk looks like before it is pasteurized, and the many, many jobs a farmer must do to make his farm run smoothly. One exciting visit was to see three new baby calves. Children got to climb up on a tractor to see how that feels, too. Thank you to the Frankenberg family for hosting us!
