WARKWORTH GAMEFISH CLUB INC. 2012 GRUMPY’S ONE BASE FITZROY, GREAT BARRIER ISLAND, FRIDAY 27th—SUNDAY 29th JANUARY 2012

The weather yet again dominated our tournament, but at

least it wasn’t a cyclone this time!

84 anglers on 24 boats had a great time and caught some

good fish. And the trip home was mint.

All three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) saw some of

the fleet head out wide and the remainder hiding some-

where generally around the back of Gt Barrier. For some of

us it was the most time we’d ever spent on the east side of

Gt Barrier and that was a worthwhile experience on it’s

own.

Over the 3 days there were 4 marlin dropped and two kept.

Brian Colville on Assassin caught and weighed his first

marlin, a good effort in those conditions and it will smoke

up nicely but wasn’t quite up to the 90kg minimum. The

only qualifying marlin weighed was Brodie Campbells

117.5kg Stripey on Violator.

A bitter disappointment for Kim and the crew on Femme

Fatale was having the line break in the effort to recover a

big Blue Marlin they had hooked in almost 500m. Sounds

like it was an absolute horse, better luck next time.

No significant tuna were caught, but many boats ran into

plagues of Skippies, so the food is there for marlin. There

was a bit of snapper bait harvesting going on, it would be

good to find a reliable method and recipe for bottling Skip-

pies like canned ones—yum.

A large Bronze Whaler at 130kg by Josh on the new boat

Much More won the shark section and took out the sweep-

stake for the heaviest weighed gamefish.

Snappers were chunky again this year, with Trevor Bogue

and Boyd Jones (Swansong), and Craig McNaught

(Seagers) taking out the top 3.

The top 3 Kingfish were by Chris Ridley (X-Calibre),

Grant Hamilton (Elusive), and Barry Plumpton (X-

Calibre).

The radio quizzes were a little difficult because of recep-

tion, but bottles of rum (thanks Jerry at Matakana House)

went to the boats Doris, Mahina, and [of course] Assassin.

The Saturday get together at Smokehouse was another

goodie, and went on ‘til the early hours for some. We drew

5 entrants out to go in the travel draw, and ran a couple of

raffles, with the proceeds going straight back into the prize

pool. We’ll have to all try getting into the beach a bit

quicker in future so we don’t run out of light next time.

dodgy tree swing I thought we would see the Westpac helicopter

for sure.

Our last night and prizegiving was hosted by Kim Pickard at the

Barrier Hilton—thanks so much Kim, it was awesome. The new

wharf and gantry is classy.

The great meal was put on by Mick and helpers, and the initial

leftovers were grazed by those that stayed late.

At the prizegiving a raffle was held for Great Barrier Radio for a

magnum bottle of rum (thanks Wolfie at Super Liquor Wark-

worth) and we raised $685 for Emmy and her team. The winning

ticket was held by Bevan Wech on the boat Nicarla. Lucky it was

the last night, because his crew could have been a lot of trouble

with that much rum.

The final results look a bit like this:

Grumpys One Base Trophy, Heaviest Shark, and Sweepstake:

Josh on the Richard Spencer skippered boat Much More, 130kg

Bronze Whaler shark

Presidents Challenge, Heaviest Marlin:

Brodie Campbell on Violator, 117.5kg Striped Marlin

Snapper:

1st Trevor Bogue 8.96kg

2nd Boyd Jones 7.92kg

3rd Craig McNaught 7.05kg

Kingfish:

1st Chris Ridley 12.74kg

2nd Grant Hamilton 11.12kg

3rd Barry Plumpton 10.00kg

Trophies:

ENL Trophy for vessel giving the most support:

Femme Fatale, for coming back early for weighing and hosting

duties.

Grumpys Hard Luck Trophy:

Femme Fatale, for missing out on their undoubtedly monster

Blue Marlin.

The Lady Doreen Biggest Cockup Trophy:

Always hotly contested for, but Aaron on Dirty Berty was the

‘winner’ for starting to gas the boat up through the rod holder.

Which is a bit rough since Aaron (Matakana Marine) gave us a

new 2.5hp outboard as a prize!

The outboard was won by local man Brian Bell, who was also in

the travel prize draw.

Oodles of spot prizes and some great vouchers and product

meant almost everyone took something home besides great

memories.

We drew the other 5 contenders for the tropical holiday prize for

two people. We eliminated them in a draw one by one, until we

were left with…. Greg Jones (Laser Plumbing, Warkworth).

Congratulations Greg, he gets to work out a destination and

sponsors of the Barrier

Radio rum raffle, $685

raised this year—awesome!

page 3 of 7 timing that suits him.

The canon ended the prizegiving (thanks Con), but most people

stayed around because it was such a great venue and atmosphere.

We’re already looking forward to next year, and Kim is keen to

have us back. There’s already new sponsors jumping on board for

next year, like Ken from Floating Dock Services in Westhaven

(ph 09 379 0934) offering two free lift and cleans.

Next year we might also take Kim up on the offer of his shed as

the radio base, instead of upsetting Wombats radio act by being

out of range. Thanks Wombat for your work.

Thanks to the Warkworth Gamefish Club committee for their

efforts, these things take a TEAM and we have a good one.

Please remember to tell our sponsors what a great time you had.

We got an excellent response from sponsors to subsidizing the

meal which meant more cash could go straight back in to the

prize pool—thankyou.

From here we’ll let the pictures do the talking, see you next year!

Dave.
