Motor protectionSingle-phase motors have a built-in thermal overload switch.

Three-phase motors must be connected to a motorstarter in accordance with local regulations.

Ambient temperature

Maximum 104° F [40° C].

If the ambient temperature exceeds +104° F [+40°C]or if the motor is located 3,280 ft. [1000m] above sealevel, the motor output (P2) must be reduced due tothe low density and consequently low cooling effect ofthe air. In such cases, it may be necessary to use amotor with a higher output.

Example of operating and inlet pressuresThe values for operating and inlet pressures shownin the tables must not be considered individually butmust always be compared, see the followingexamples:

Example 1:The following pump type has been selected:CR 3-10 U-A-AMax. operating pressure: 232 psi [16 bar]Max. inlet pressure: 145 psi [10 bar]Discharge pressure against a closed valve: 139 psi[9.6 bar], see page 28.

This pump is not allowed to start at an inlet pressureof 145 psi [10 bar], but on the other hand at an inletpressure of 232 psi less 139 psi = 93 psi [16.0 less9.6 = 6.4 bar].

Example 2:The following pump type has been selected:CR 3-2 U-A-AMax. operating pressure: 232 psi [16 bar]Max. inlet pressure: 87 psi [6 bar]Discharge pressure against a closed valve: 27 psi[1.9 bar], see page 28.

This pump is allowed to start at an inlet pressure of87 psi [6 bar], as the discharge pressure against aclosed valve is only 27 psi [1.9 bar], which results inan operating pressure of 87 psi + 27 psi = 114 psi[6.0 + 1.9 = 7.9 bar]. On the contrary, the max.operating pressure of this pump is limited to 144 psi[7.9 bar], as a higher operating pressure will requirean inlet pressure of more than 87 psi [6 bar].

In case the inlet or operating pressure exceeds thepressure permitted, see Custom-built Pumps, page 45.

Operating range of the shaft sealThe actual operating range of the shaft seal dependson operating pressure, pump type, type of shaft sealand liquid temperature. The following curves apply toclean water and water containing glycol.

For other liquids, see recommended shaft seals in the“List of pumped liquids”, page 41.

In case of extreme temperatures, i.e.

• low temperatures down to -40° F [-40° C] or • high temperatures up to +356° F [180° C]see Custom-built pumps, page 45.

Performance curves

The guidelines below apply to the curves shown onthe following pages:1. The motors used for the measurements are

standard Grundfos motors.2. Performance may vary based on motor selection.3. Measurements have been made with airless water

at a temperature of 68° F.4. The curves apply to a kinematic viscosity of

u = 1 cSt (1 mm²/s).5. Due to the risk of overheating, the pumps should

not be used at a flow below the minimum flow rate.

The curve below shows the minimum flow rate as apercentage of the nominal flow rate in relation to theliquid temperature.

Selection of CR, CRI, CRN pumps

Pump sizeSelection of pump size should be based on:• Required flow and pressure at the draw-off point.• Pressure loss as a result of height differences.• Friction loss in the pipework.

It may be necessary to account for pressure loss inconnection with long pipes, bends or valves, etc.

• Best efficiency at the estimated duty point.

EfficiencyIf the pump is expected always to operate at thesame duty point, select a pump which is operating ata duty point corresponding with the best efficiency ofthe pump.

In case of controlled operation or varying consump-tion, select a pump which best efficiency falls withinthe duty range representing the highest powerconsumption, i.e. typically the duty range covering thegreater part of the duty time.

MaterialThe material variant (CR, CRI, CRN) should beselected on the basis of the liquid to be pumped. Theproduct range covers three basic types.• The CR, CRI pump types are suitable for clean,non-aggressive liquids such as potable water, oils, etc.• The CRN pump type is suitable for industrial liq-uids (see “List of pumped liquids”, page 41).

For saline or chloride-containing liquids such as seawater, CRT pumps of titanium are available. Seeseparate data on CRT.

GENERAL DATA GRUNDFOS CR(I)(N) 1s, 1, 3, and 5

Pump connectionSelection of pump connection depends on rated pres-sure and pipework. To meet any requirement the CR,CRI and CRN pumps offer a wide range of flexibleconnections such as:• Oval flange (NPT)• ANSI flange• PJE coupling• FlexiClamp• Other connections on request.

Shaft sealAs standard, the CR range is fitted with a Grundfosshaft seal suitable for the most common applications.

The following three key parameters must be takeninto account, when selecting the shaft seal:• type of pumped liquid• liquid temperature• maximum pressure.Grundfos offers a wide range of shaft seal variants tomeet specific demands (see “List of pumped liquids”,page 41).

Inlet pressure and operating pressureIt should be checked whether the pressure conditionsare fulfilled.

The limit values stated on pages 10-11 must not beexceeded regarding...• maximum inlet pressure• maximum operating pressure.

Page 15: Grundfos Cr

GRUNDFOS CR(I)(N) 1s, 1, 3, and 5 GENERAL DATA

15

Minimum inlet pressure - NPSHCalculation of the inlet pressure “H” is recommendedwhen ...• the liquid temperature is high

the flow is significantly higher than the rated flow• water is drawn from depths• water is drawn through long pipes• inlet conditions are poor.

To avoid cavitation, make sure that there is a mini-mum pressure on the suction side of the pump. Themaximum suction lift “H” in feet of head can becalculated as follows:

H = PB – NPSHR – Hf – Hs – Hv

PB = Barometric pressure in feet absolute.(Barometric pressure can be set to33.9 ft @ sea level). In closed systems, PB indicates the systempressure in feet.

NPSHR = Net Positive Suction Head in feet of head.(To be read from the NPSHR curve at thehighest flow the pump will be delivering).

Hf = Friction loss in suction pipe in feet of head. (At the highest flow the pump will be delivering.)

Hv = Vapour pressure in feet of head.(To be read from the vapour pressure scale. “Hv” depends on the liquidtemperature “Tm”).

Hs = Safety margin = minimum 1-1/2 feet of head.

If the “H” calculated is positive, the pump can operateat a suction lift of maximum “H” feet of head.If the “H” calculated is negative, an inlet pressure ofminimum “H” feet of head is required.

Check that the pump is not and will not be exposed tocavitation.

Notes:1. The information in this chart

applies to Grundfos' specifiedBaldor® motors. Grundfos CRpumps are supplied with heavy-duty2-pole, NEMA C-frame motors builtor selected to our rigid specifica-tions. All CR pump motors haveheavy-duty bearings in them formaximum thrust requirements. It is not recommended that anoff-the-shelf standard Baldor motorbe used on a Grundfos pump.Ideally, the best motor choice wouldbe the Grundfos specified motor.

2. Other motor types are available (i.e.,Explosion proof, Mill and Chem duty,High Efficiency, etc.), consult localGrundfos company for moreinformation.

3. Pumps supplied by GrundfosCanada are normally supplied withmotors from other manufacturers.575 volt motors meet EPAct/NRCefficiency standards. Dimensionsand data will vary, contact localGrundfos company for more infor-mation.

List of pumped liquidsA number of typical liquids are listed below.

Other pump versions may be applicable, but those statedin the list are considered to be the best choices.

The table is intended as a general guide only, andcannot replace actual testing of the pumped liquidsand pump materials under specific workingconditions.

The list should, however, be applied with somecaution as factors such as:• concentration of the pumped liquid• liquid temperature• pressuremay affect the chemical resistance of a specific pumpversion.

Notes

D Often with additives.

E Density and/or viscosity differ from that of water.

Allow for this when calculating motor output and pump

performance.

F Pump selection depends on many factors.

Please contact Grundfos.

H Risk of chrystallization/precipitation in shaft seal

2 Corrosion.

The pumped liquid attacks all standard metals. Use a

shaft seal with no metal components in contact with the

pumped liquid.

4 Poor lubricating properties.

The pumped liquid has so poor lubricating properties

that dry running should be avoided.

7 The pumped liquid is easily ignited.

8 The pumped liquid is flammable.

9 Insoluble in water.

Pumped liquidsThin, non-explosive liquids, not containing solid parti-cles or fibers. The liquid must not chemically attackthe pump materials.

When pumping liquids with a density and/or viscosityhigher than that of water, oversized motors must beused, if required.

Whether a pump is suitable for a particular liquiddepends on a number of factors of which the mostimportant are the chloride content, pH value, temperature and content of chemicals, oils, etc.

Please note that aggressive liquids (e.g. sea waterand some acids) may attack or dissolve the protectiveoxide film of the stainless steel and thus causecorrosion.

The CR, CRI, CRN pump types are suitable for thefollowing liquids:

CR, CRINon-corrosive liquids. For liquid transfer, circulation and pressure boostingof cold or hot clean water.

CRNIndustrial liquids. In systems where all parts in contact with the liquidmust be made of high-grade stainless steel.

CRT• Saline liquids.• Hypochlorites. For saline or chloride-containing liquids such as seawater or oxidizing agents such as hypochlorites, CRTpumps of titanium are available. See separate databooklet on CRT.

Motors

Variant Description

Explosion-proof motor For operation in hazardous atmospheres, EExe and EExd explosion-proof or dust-ignition-proof

motors may be required.Oversized motor Ambient temperatures above 104° F or

installation at altitudes of more than3,280 ft. above sea level require the useof an oversized motor (i.e. derating).

Shaft Seals

Variant Description

High-pressure Recommended for applications involvingshaft seal pressures between 362 and 580 psi

[25 and 40 bar].

Air-cooled Recommended for applications involvingshaft seal system extremely high temperatures. No con-

ventional mechanical shaft seal canwithstand liquid temperatures of up to356° F for any length of time. For that type of application, Grundfos’unique air-cooled shaft seal systemis recommended. In order to ensure a low liquid temperaturearound the standard shaft seal, the pump is fitted with a special air-cooled shaftseal chamber. No separate cooling is required.

Double shaft seal Recommended for applications involving with pressure chamber poisonous with pressure explosive liquids.

Protects the surrounding environment and the people working in the vicinity of the pump.Consists of two seals mounted in a “back-to-back” arrangement inside a separatepressure seal chamber. As the pressure in the chamber is higher than the pump pressure, leakage is prevented. A dosing pumpor a special pressure-intensifier generates the seal chamber pressure.

CR MAGdrive Magnetically driven pumps for industrial applications. Key applications are industrial processes invoving the handling ofaggressive, environmental, dangerous or volatile liquids, e.g. organic compounds, solvents, etc.

Pumps

Variant Description

Horizontally mounted For safety reasons, certain applications, for pump instance on ships, require the pump to be

mounted in the horizontal position. For easy installation the pump is equipped withbrackets that support motor and pump.

Low-temperature pump Exposed to temperatures down to -40° Fdown to -40° F [-40° C] [-40° C], coolant pumps may require neck-

rings with a different diameter in order toprevent impeller drag.Gaskets are made of vulcanized rubber.

High-speed pump For high-pressure applications, a unique 680 psi [47 bar] pump capable of generating up to 680 psi

[47 bar] pressure is available. The pump is equipped with a high-speed motor, type MGE. The direction of rotation is the opposite of that of standard pumps, and the chamber stack is turned upside-down, as a result of which the pumpedliquid flows in the opposite direction.

High-pressure pump For high-pressure applications, a unique up to 638 psi [44 bar] double pump system capable of generating

up to 638 psi [44 bar] pressure is available.

Low-NPSH pump Recommanded for boiler-feed applications(improved suction) where cavitation may occur due to poor

inlet conditions.

Pump with bearing flange Recommended for standard motors. The bearing flange increases the life of motor bearings. The bearing flange is also suitable for applications where the inlet pressure is higher than the maximum pressurerecommended.

Connections and other variants

Variant Description

Flange connections In addition to the wide range of standard flange connections, a 232 psistandard clamping flange is available.Customized flanges are available according to specifications.

Pickled and passivated The objective of pickling is to enhancepumps the corrosion resistance of the stainless

steel. This is achieved by removing welddiscoloration and impurities such as iron or inclusions from the surface of the steel by means of a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid (pickling solution). After pickling, the stainless steel ispassivated in nitric acid. The pickling and passivating process ensures a completely clean metal surface.
