Start planning your 2014-15 Girl Scout year. Girls and Adults there are opportunities and adventures for you in the Early Fall Preview! Sit down with your girls and parents to explore this sneak peek.

To get the most out of the Early Fall Preview use the new and improved Activity Finder. It allows you to search for more precise information using your girls’ interests to find events happening in your neighborhood as well as easily register! Also access FAQ’s and easily find detailed instructions on registration and polices.

Registration is now open for events September - December 2014.The full Program and Event Guide will be online and mailed to troop leaders in August to help you plan the rest of your year. Be on the lookout for big events so girls can travel and meet girls from all over Northern California.

Throughout the year, new programs may be introduced. Stay up-to-date by using the Activity Finder and watch for program details via e-news, Facebook, Twitter, and other Girl Scout correspondence. Sign-up at GirlSoutsNorCal.org/subscribe to receive news about everything happening council-wide. The events in the Early Fall Preview are separated by the nationally recognized Pathways. Pathways make it easy to participate in Girl Scouts. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Series, Event and Travel.

Within the Event Pathway we have highlighted GSNorCal’s special program initiatives. In the Early Fall Preview you will see Growing Strong, Green by Nature, Girls Go Tech, and Outdoor Adventure. The highlights are defined below to help you navigate:

• GrowingStrong: Events focus on self- esteem, art, drama, adventure, sports, or friendships.

• GreenByNature: Events focus on the environment, conservation, or related activities.

• GirlsGoTech: Events focus on science, technology, engineering, math or related activities.

• BusinessSmarts: Events that focus on the 5 skills or related activities.

• OutdoorAdventure: Events that build adult and/or girl outdoor skills.

• Adult: Events that are for adult volunteers or parents or have an adult component that build skills on working with girls and explore the benefits of Girl Scouting.

We’ve listed information about programs designed just for girls. Girl Scouts of Northern California offers activities council-wide from Eureka to Red Bluff, San Jose to San Francisco, Santa Rosa to Oakland, and all points in between, so that you can discover exciting opportunities to try new things, and develop new friendships in your area. We encourage you to participate in events everywhere!

How to Use This Guide

1. Go through the guide with girls and parents.

2. Find programs that match the age level and interests of your girls.

3. Girls can attend events with their troop, a buddy, or on their own. Please note that unless otherwise indicated an adult chaperone must attend.

4. Register for the event at GirlScoutsNorCal.org/events.

Minimum and maximum attendance requirements exist for all programs. Girl Scouts of Northern California reserves the right to cancel or change any scheduled activities due to lack of enrollment, severe weather, or natural disaster.

Because we’re all unique, we may have special needs that may need to be met so that we can attend an event. Please e-mail [email protected] if you have questions, or to find out whether or not we can accommodate special needs at the event you wish to attend. For events that include food, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to let us know about dietary restrictions. We are usually able to accommodate many dietary needs such as gluten free, vegetarian, nut allergies, and dairy free options if we know about them in advance. In some cases, the family will be asked to provide supplemental items.

The Lead the Way Leadership Conference for Young Women is planned and run by high school girls just like you! Young women meet on a monthly basis to plan and put into action all aspects of the conference. Become part of the planning team and make it the best conference in history. Join one of the exciting committees including: decorations, recreation, registration, and welcoming. Truly take the lead! Meeting dates: Aug. 25, Sept. 29, Oct. 27, 2014. Jan. 12, Jan. 26, Feb. 9, 2015.

Chicks in Charge is what they call themselves! This fun group of girls from lots of different troops and service units, meet once a month to create and run exciting programs for other Girl Scouts and friends! These leaders also have a chance to weigh in on important Council decisions. Girls can make new friends and earn volunteer service hours while making decisions, running events, playing games, discussing girl issues, snacking on goodies, and winning awesome door prizes! Meetings are monthly. San Jose meets the 1st Tuesday and San Bruno meets the 3rd Thursday.

Please Note: Girls must attend monthly planning meetings and run the programs they plan throughout the year.

Get up close to the GS Amazing Race participants and chronicle their thrilling journey! Capture the race using your own cameras and create a documentary for the promotion of this Amazing event. Girls will learn navigation, film making and interview techniques during this exciting weekend. Fee includes group sleeping arrangements, public transportation costs and some meals. You will use your own vehicle and gas to travel about 300-500 miles during the weekend.

Ever wonder what it would be like to write a fashion magazine, be an Olympic athlete, a jet pilot or a crime solving detective? Try on different roles and gain self-confidence as you learn how to be a leader. Then take your new knowledge and skills and inspire others to try new things!

BabysitterTraining

This American Red Cross babysitting class is a great way to earn cash. Get the expertise and experience needed to make YOU one of the most asked for babysitters. You will learn how to interview for a babysitting job, make responsible decisions, supervise children, and keep the kids and you safe. Learn safe play, first aid, choking and rescue breathing, and critical emergency action skills.

Come discover exciting opportunities and resources available in Girl Scouts to “Make a Difference”. Whether you are an adult working with girls, or a girl wanting to make the world a better place, you will be amazed by the many options available. AmazingRace

The Girl Scout Amazing Race (based on the CBS show) is a full weekend of physical and mental challenges. Girls are in charge of navigation and decision-making, adults will participate in some challenges. Girls will develop critical thinking skills while solving challenges. Program cost includes entrance, activity fees, group sleeping, and some meals. Teams use their own vehicles and gas, traveling 300-500 miles during the weekend. Each team must always have only 1 adult and 3-4 girls.

Start your Daisy year by exploring a Journey. Our littlest Girl Scouts will meet flower friends that represent the Girl Scout Law and travel around the globe to learn about pandas, elephants and monkeys. Through fun activities and lively conversation, girls will examine what caring, responsibility, and respect looks like.

Work together toward your Aware, Alert, and Affirm Awards to learn how to improve the world’s air quality while supporting and encouraging your own ability as a leader. Some pre and post work is required to complete the awards. Attending adults participate in concurrent programming on mentoring Cadette Girl Scouts.

Travel through new experiences as you discover that you can do ANYTHING! The festivities will include stations where girls can venture into It’s Your World- Change It! while discovering what college is like. Come celebrate and enjoy cool crafts, tasty snacks, and lots of fun with the sisters of Kappa Delta Sorority for their fifth annual International Girls’ Day bonanza!

Everyone has a story to tell and we want to hear yours! Come spend your day jumping into the It’s Your Story - Tell It Journey series. Explore the first sessions of the Journey and how badges connect to each step, while exploring new ways to express yourself! In addition to activities, older girls will have sessions on planning Silver or Gold Award projects. Adults – this is for you too! Learn more about Journeys, then break out to small groups to explore mentoring other girls at your level.

Please Note: Journey books not included. Bring books and bagged lunch; light snacks will be provided.

If you are interested in working directly with younger Girl Scouts, you will want to become a Girl Scout Program Aide (PA). Being a PA gives you an opportunity to share your expertise and knowledge of Girl Scouting with others. Adults are not required to stay for this training.

Raging Waters San Jose hosts the 5th Annual Girl Scouts of Northern California Ducky Derby Fundraiser. Ducky Derby is a rubber duck race for cool prizes like the latest tablet and gift certificates for awesome opportunities around the Greater Bay Area. Earn your Comic Artist badge in this special, hands-on workshop just for Cadettes. Work with a professional cartoonist to develop stories and characters and create your own four-panel comic strip from beginning to end. Cadettes will receive their Comic Artist badge upon workshop completion.

SchulzMuseum: Peanuts-Artist

Art abounds at the Schulz Museum with hands-on activities focused on the Girl Scout Artist badges. Brownies will paint with sticks and twigs and use color in new ways. Juniors will experiment with different materials, techniques, and perspectives. Cadettes will work on their comic artist badge and Daisies will get Inspired by Animals for their very own Journey. Also meet live artists and cartoonists, ice skate at Snoopy’s Home Ice, and earn a Schulz Museum Fun Patch.

Winterfest

A magical winter wonderland event for Girl Scouts of all ages, friends, and family. Just in time for the holiday season, shop for everybody on your list! Find handmade crafts, games, and shop at booths run by older girl troops. Everyone is welcome!

Heck yeah! Celebrate the end of your membership year by a thrilling drop off a 4-story waterslide or relax and enjoy floating around a cool lazy lagoon. After the slides close, party down with our DJ and sleep under the glittering stars. Wake up to a hot pancake breakfast and start your day on the slides again with tons of thrills and spills! If you’ve got tons of summer plans, join us for just the day event.

Where does our food come from and how is a meal happy? What are the challenges for local farmers? Discover answers and more in this weekend long event. Dinosaurs once again roam the earth when the spectacular production, Walking With Dinosaurs The Arena Spectacular, returns to the SAP Center at San Jose for a limited time. Don’t miss the show, based on the award-winning BBC Television Series, that critics have called ‘awesome’ and ‘breathtaking!’

Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops can run sales booths at the event to sell hand-made items and earn money for troop activities. These troops must also run a free activity booth to entertain participants. Each troop must register its booth and have their plans approved through the online registration system. This is a great way to earn money, leadership or service hours, and have fun!

The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to host a program all about birds! Girls will learn about the industrious and expert nest builders whose beaks and tongues are perfectly adapted to take advantage of their favorite food, and some of the local habitats where they live. Girls will create their own bird nests, dissect albatross boluses, and learn how to protect the environment these cool creatures live in. This is a great way to help you earn the Animal Habitats badge.

Harvest the fun you’ve sown as a Girl Scout in NorCal! Play traditional harvest games, see what’s ready for pickin’, explore new adventures, and plant the seeds for new Girl Scouts to discover the fun. There will be a Ropes Course Sampler for girls in 4th grade and above ONLY, at an additional cost of $10 per girl. Ropes Course Sessions are limited and must be pre-registered.

Earn your Flower Badge at the Hayward Shoreline! Hike the trail to find wildflowers, do a flower dissection under a microscope, and discover the many ways flowers are part of our lives, from bouquets, to medicine, to food. Badges provided.

The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to host a fun program where girls get to be science detectives and experience a variety of habitats including chaparral, riparian, and redwood forest. They will observe the behavior of various insects in a micro-environment, learn how ladybugs are beneficial to the environment, explore inside and out, and get to use scientific equipment as they learn and discover. This is a great way to earn the Brownie Bugs badge!

Flying thousands of miles at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and a mile high in the sky, monarch butterflies return annually to the same trees at the San Leandro Marina to hunker down for the winter. Learn about the mysterious migrations of the monarch butterfly from a butterfly expert at this amazing location.

Bugs are cool, so put your naturalist cap on and let’s go observe these interesting creatures on a hike through the marsh, magnify them under the microscope and create an insect to help remember their uniqueness. Bug Badge provided.

The Abby Sobrato Science and Sustainability Center is excited to announce a program all about trees! Girls will participate in a “tree treasure hunt”, work with wood by hammering and sanding to connect wood types with common household and school products, and participate in the cycle of growing a new plant to help the Earth. Come to Walden West and let them help you earn your Clover and Rose Petals .

SalmonHabitatRestoration

Restore and preserve salmon habitat by repairing banks, removing invasive species, and planting trees. Get up close and personal with the sturdy young oak and the protective dogwood. Your work will help the salmon through the winter. Hosted by the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network.

Join us at the shoreline, where we’ll trek along the Bay Trail, encountering plants and animals as we go. Before we depart on our hike we’ll make sure we have the proper gear and snacks to keep our energy levels pumped during our 3-hour exploration. Hiking badge provided.

An amazing outdoor learning experience for beginner to experienced volunteers! Enjoy our mountain retreat and learn to improve your outdoor skills and programming resources. Workshops and activities provide practical skills and hands-on experience for working with girls outdoors. Enhance your troop’s outdoor experiences to boost their enjoyment of Girl Scouts! Hey girls, want to learn some awesome outdoor skills? Then join us for a day of outdoor fun to learn camp craft skills like knots, lashing, fire building, orienteering, outdoor safety and more. Troop leaders, learn some easy tips to continue outdoor experiences with your girls throughout the year.

While girls will have fun exploring It’s Your Story Tell It at each age level, volunteers and parents will learn more about Journeys: what they are, how to make them fun, and ensure they work for your troop! You will then break out into small groups to explore mentoring girls at your age level. Learn, swap stories and best practices, and have fun!

Invest in your Older Girls! While girls are diving deep into the Journey topic you will get the opportunity to explore best practices to help them hone their leadership skills as they gear up to earn Girl Scouting’s highest awards! You will participate in a concurrent workshop covering everything from how to implement the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, positive youth development, take action projects and the Silver or Gold Award. Learn how to bring Journey Weekends to your neighborhood. These weekends include approximately 12 hours of volunteer development and fun for you!

To middle school and beyond! The Girl Scouting universe of opportunity expands once girls reach middle and high school. They travel the world, earn awards that catapult girls into leadership positions, join networking groups with executive women all over the bay area, attend enriching conferences representing the council, and become prepared for college. All of this and more is available to girls in grades 6-12. Learn about how your girls can achieve more of what they want through Girl Scouting.

FallFestival

Fall Festival is a weekend leader training retreat held at the Whiskeytown N.E.E.D Camp, located 12 miles west of Redding. Fall Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct. 12 with the option of arriving Friday night Oct. 10. Enjoy a weekend where you will make new friends, learn new skills and have a great time. Meals, lodging and classes are included in one low price. In addition to your classes, you will enjoy an evening of fun, games, SWAPS, campfire, and more!

An amazing outdoor learning experience for beginner and experienced volunteers! Enjoy our mountain retreat and learn to improve your outdoor skills and programming resources. Workshops and activities provide practical skills and hands-on experience for working with girls outdoors. Enhance your troop’s outdoor experiences to boost their enjoyment of Girl Scouts! Adult participants will earn their Troop Camping Certificate.
