DOVER -On Friday, October 17, St.

Thomas Aquinas (STA) High School students will personify its school mission and, in so doing, will transform the lives of stu-dents and foster a commitment of justice, service, and moral leader-ship. The event is noted as ‘Saints Taking Action Day of Service.’

In their fourth annual salute to community service, the students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni volunteers will lend their hands, feet, and hearts to nearly 50 organizations located in Salisbury, MA, Milton, NH and York, ME.

The ‘Saints Taking Action Day of Service’ is a day when the St. Thomas Aquinas community acknowledges its desire to spread goodness and nurture compas-sion. It is a day when kindness, humility and grace trump sched-ules, routines and haste. Partici-pants assist in a wide variety of local organizations with various projects such as raking, clean-

PORTSMOUTH – Since 2000, Seacoast

Mental Health Center’s Erik Cogswell Memorial Conference in Portsmouth, NH has educat-ed thousands from across New England, including individuals with mental illness, their friends and family members, mental health professionals and others.

At the 15th Erik Cogswell Memorial Conference on Oc-tober 23, at the Portsmouth Harbor Events and Confer-ence Center, nationally known Cheryl Sharp, senior advisor, trauma-informed services for

the National Council for Behav-ioral Health, will serve as key-note speaker. In recent years, substantial research into trauma has been conducted, a develop-ment that has increased the medical community’s under-standing of its contributing role in mental illness. As a result, trauma-informed mental health services have become increas-ingly important in the field, which will serve as the focus of this year’s conference.

In a field in which those who have been diagnosed with mental illness are often reluc-

ing, visiting the elderly, organiz-ing closets, habitat preservation, painting and more.

Because collaboration and unity empower its sense of mis-sion, St. Thomas Aquinas invit-ed middle school students from Dover’s St. Mary Academy, Portsmouth’s St. Patrick School,

Rochester’s St. Elizabeth Seton School, and Hampton’s Sacred Heart School to work alongside STA students.

To kick off the event, Billy Gabriel (class of 2010) and a group of young alumni have created a video presentation to ignite the spark of community

spirit and to display to the cur-rent STA community how they continue to honor this day with service in their respective com-munities. For more information, visit www.stalux.org or call 603-742-3206.

tant to seek help or at mini-mum not inclined to publicly discuss their experience, the conference is a lifeline for many people. More than a forum for “consumers” of mental health services to discuss their respec-tive experiences, the confer-ence annually provides con-tinuing education credits for mental health professionals and others who may work with such individuals.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the conference has been its ability to attract speakers with a national repu-

tation. Past keynote speakers include Beverly Cobain, RNC, author of “When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens” and family member of rock icon Kurt Cobain who commit-ted suicide in 1994. Other no-table speakers include Peter S. Jensen, M.D., Director of The Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health at Columbia University and, most recently, John T. Broderick Jr., fifth dean & president of the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

As for its beginnings, the conference was established by Seacoast Mental Health Center in close partnership with Karin and Ed Cogswell whose son Erik died by suicide in Novem-ber of 1999 as a result of bipolar disorder. Initially conceived to educate, support and provide resources to people living with and recovering from bipolar disorder, their families, friends, and the general community, the scope of the conference now in-cludes all mental illnesses. In recent years, conference orga-nizers have made a concerted effort to attract and educate more professionals, who in turn can share their knowledge with others.

A Dim ProspectThose of you who have visited RPL after sunset in recent days may have noticed the parking lot as being somewhat dim. As it turned out, mice invaded one of the lamp posts, built a nest and managed to compromise the internal wiring. Of course, their home post of choice was the junction point of the whole parking lot circuit, so a few nips later, we were in the dark. Luckily, this affected only the post lights on the side of our lot. The prob-lem should be repaired by now. As always, please be cautious as you navigate between our parking lot and entrance along the well-lit walkway.

Open Enrollment: A Great Time to Review Your Retirement Plan

If you work for a medium-to-large company, you may now be entering the “open enroll-ment” period — that time of year when you get to make changes to your employee benefits. Your benefit pack-age can be a big piece of your overall financial picture, so you’ll want to make the right moves — especially in regard to your employer-sponsored retirement plan.

Take a close look at your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), if you work for a school or a nonprofit group, or a 457(b), if you work for a state or local government. And keep these possible moves in mind:

Boost your contributions. If your salary has gone

up over the past year, or if you just think you have a reasonable “cushion” in your disposable income, boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retire-ment plan. Even if you can’t afford to contribute the maxi-mum amount — which, in 2014, is $17,500, or $23,000

if you’re 50 or older — to your 401(k) or similar plan, try to put in as much as you can afford. Remember the key benefits of these plans: Your money can grow tax deferred and your contributions can lower your annual taxable income. (Keep in mind, though, that you will eventually be taxed on your withdrawals, and any with-drawals you take before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.)

Don’t miss the match. Try to take full advantage

of your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Your employer may match 50% of employee contributions, up to the first 6% of your salary. So if you’re only deferring 3% of your income, you are miss-ing half the match — or leav-ing money “on the table,” so to speak.

Rebalance, if necessary. You may be able to change

the investment mix of your employer-sponsored retirement plan throughout the year, but you might find that the best

time to review your holdings and rebalance your portfolio is during open enrollment, when you’re reviewing all your ben-efit options. Try to determine if your investment allocation is still appropriate for your needs or if you own some investments that are chronically underper-forming. And always keep in mind the need to diversify. Try to spread your money around a variety of investments within your plan, with the exact per-centages of each investment depending on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. As you near retirement, you may need to lower your overall risk level, but even at this stage of your career, you’ll benefit from a diversified portfolio. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your holdings.

Review your beneficiary designations.

Your retirement plan’s beneficiary designations are important and, in fact, can even supersede the wishes you express in your will. So if you

experience changes in your life — marriage, remarriage, a birth or an adoption, etc. — you’ll need to update the ben-eficiary designations on your 401(k) or similar plan. It won’t take much time today — and it can help prevent a lot of trouble tomorrow.

You work hard for the money that goes into your re-tirement plan —so make sure your plan is working hard for you.

ROCHESTER -The Homemakers Health

Services, in partnership with Frisbie Memorial Hospital, is once again hosting a Senior Fall Health and Wellness Expo for seniors, their families and care-givers on Friday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 94 Eastern Avenue, Rochester.

The event, which will fea-ture a Fall/Halloween theme, will showcase more than 60 health and wellness vendors, free breakfast and lunch, free health screenings and giveaways, as well as raffles and prizes.

Believing that taking good care of your health is one of the most important things you can do for your family and loved ones, The Homemakers and Fris-bie Memorial Hospital invite all seniors, their family and caregiv-ers to this special day of health and wellness.

“As one of the few medical

facilities in the region providing geriatric psychiatry services, Fris-bie Memorial Hospital is pleased to partner with The Homemak-ers Health Services to present the Senior Fall Health and Wellness Expo,” says Judy Ouellette, ex-ecutive director, Fund Develop-ment and Community Relations at Frisbie Memorial Hospital. “This opportunity makes it pos-sible to educate seniors, their families and caregivers about the compassionate care and medical expertise of our Geriatric Psy-chiatry program as well as other community programs and ser-vices available.”

“Our mission at The Home-makers Health Services is to provide comprehensive health care and supportive services to enhance the lives of individuals in our community. The goal of this health and wellness fair is to empower seniors, their caregivers and loved ones by providing them with the opportunity to learn

about the resources available to them to help them take charge of their health and wellness and be educated health care consumers,” says Linda Nylund, community liaison at The Homemakers.

Last year more than 300 se-niors, their caregivers and loved ones attended the Senior Fall Health and Wellness Expo.

“Plan not to miss this op-portunity to meet with local busi-nesses and organizations that can help improve your lifestyle and achieve your goals for better living. You’ll be able to get a flu shot, meet health specialists, take advantage of free screenings and learn more about healthy living so that you can live your best pos-sible life,” says Nylund. “It will be both informative and fun, and to top it off there will be free give-aways, raffles and prizes!”

Both sponsorship oppor-tunities and exhibitor spaces are available. For details, contact Linda Nylund, community li-aison, at 603-335-1770, x 114 or [email protected].
