in the Halloween season with the return of the award-winning play ‘Ghosts of Ocean House,’ by York writer Michael Kimball, re-cipient of the 2014 John Gassner Memorial Playwriting Award (New England Theatre Confer-ence) for his most recent play, ‘Duck and Cover’.

‘Ghosts of Ocean House’ is a psychological mystery about a brother and two sisters who, to inherit their late father’s Vic-torian seaside mansion, must spend one week for ten years living together harmoniously–or else lose the house to charity. This is their final year, their final week. But the newest family member, a flighty, fragile young bride named Darlene, harbors a dark, mysterious past–as does the quiet old house–and when they come together, ghosts begin awakening.

Bessette and Jenn Kurtz perform ‘A Few Seconds With Our Fa-thers’ on Sunday, October 5 for ACT ONE’s Beyond Festival at the West End Studio Theatre in Portsmouth.

Bessette and Kurtz have long shared an interest in WWII. Besettet’s father served in the war but never spoke of it. Yet Curt has always treasured stories he heard about the war, and over the years transformed these stories into songs. Jenn has

an extensive background in Hos-pice and Social Services working with members of the WWII gen-eration.

Out of their deep respect for the young men and women who lived during those momen-tous years, Bessette and Kurtz have created ‘A Few Seconds With Our Fathers,’ a moving and uplifting tribute featuring original songs, music from the period, stories and letters to and form the front.

‘A Few Seconds With Our Fathers’ will be performed

When Is It Time to Make Portfolio Changes?

The power of local. Giving

1.800.339.6573 • kennebunksavings.com

Relationships come in all shapes and sizes. Whether through a donation to man’s best friend or volunteer work, giving back is just what we do. And that’s led to many happy friendships.

What Lucy taught us about giving back.

The kids are back at school and summer va-

cations are now just fading memories, so it must be autumn. But the seasons don’t just move on the calendar — they also change in your life. And, speaking of changes, you’ll have to make many of them as you move through the years — and that includes changes to your investment portfolio. But how will you know when it’s time to take action?

Just as Mother Nature sends out “signals” to indicate a change in seasons — bloom-ing flowers, falling leaves, warmer or colder tempera-tures, longer or shorter days, etc. — your portfolio will fre-quently “tell” you when you need to make adjustments. Here are a couple of indicators you may want to heed:

• Out-of-balance port-folio — Even the best stocks can lose value when the over-

all market is down, but if you only own stocks, you could take a big hit during a downturn — and if it happens repeatedly, you may find it hard to even stay invested. After all, stocks will always fluctuate in value, and protection of your princi-pal is not guaranteed. Yet you can at least help defend your-self against market volatility by balancing your portfolio with a mix of stocks, bonds, govern-ment securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other invest-ments, with the percentage of each type of asset based on your individual goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.

• “Overweighting” of indi-vidual investments — Related to the point made above, you can also have too much money kept in a single investment, such as an individual stock or bond. Sometimes, this “overweight-ing” can happen almost on its own, as when a stock, or stock-based vehicle, has increased so

much in value that it now takes on a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intend-ed — possibly bringing with it more risk than you had intend-ed, too. As a general rule, no single investment should take up more than a small percent-age of your entire portfolio.

Your own life may also send you some messages regard-ing changes you may need to make to your investment and fi-nancial strategies. Here are just a few of the milestones that may trigger necessary moves:

• New child — You’ll need to review your life insurance to make sure it’s sufficient to help provide for a newborn or newly adopted child, should anything happen to you. You may also want to begin investing in a col-lege savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan.

• New job — Assuming your new job offers you a retire-ment plan, such as a 401(k) or similar vehicle, you’ll have some

choices to make. How much can you afford to contribute? How should you allocate your dollars among the investment choices offered in the plan? How can you best integrate your 401(k) or other plan into your overall investment portfolio to avoid duplication?

• Impending retirement — As you enter retirement, you may want to adjust your port-folio to help reduce its short-term fluctuations and to pro-vide more current income op-portunities. At the same time, you may still need to invest for

growth — you could be retired for two or three de-cades, and you’ll need to stay ahead of inflation.

Pay close attention to the messages coming from your portfolio — and from your life. These “signals” will give you a good idea of when it’s time to make the right invest-ment-related moves.

PORTSMOUTH -The Ocean is a vast mys-

tery. In 2001, Marine naturalists Jen Kennedy and Dianna Schulte set out to raise awareness about local ocean life.

Kennedy and Schulte founded the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation (BOS) and made it their own personal missions to protect marine mam-mals in the Gulf of Maine. With the power of education they have

slowly, but steadily, increased re-search and conservation efforts in the Gulf of Maine.

“We wanted to start the Blue Ocean Society so we could produce our own data, and have an outreach component, really try to get that data to the public in as close to real time as possible,” says Kennedy.

Blue Ocean Society has become the missing puzzle piece for marine conservation and

research on the northern East coast. Each year from May until October, Blue Ocean Society collects observational data on marine mammals from three-four commercial whale watching boats. These boats focus primar-ily around Jeffreys Ledge, a pop-ular area in the Gulf of Maine for biodiversity as well as for fishing and recreation.

While aboard the boats, the Blue Ocean Society research-

ers and interns record sightings of whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, fish, and seabirds. Digital images are taken of each sight-ing and later carefully analyzed for distinct features and natural markings on the animals. The images can be used to distinguish between known individuals and any new members of the area.

“I love the constant re-

Hampshire Division of Historical Resources notes that “‘George Dufour, thoroughly investigated the site by probing for stones, creating a grid and plotting the location of each stone…A data-base of all the stones, with names and any biographical data and inscriptions was created, along with a new map locating the stone, keyed to the database.’ Judy Dufour began the database and was able to use it to help with genealogical research.”

“The Exeter Chapter has a long involvement with the histor-ic Winter Street Cemetery,” said Susan O’Leary, Exeter Chapter Regent. “One hundred years ago, member Elizabeth Folsom spear-

headed improvement efforts and documented visible stones. The DAR placed white marble mark-ers supplied by the US War De-partment to mark the graves of

Revolutionary soldiers, and paid for the iron gate you see today at the Winter Street entrance to the cemetery. We hope to play a role in the future in supporting this historical treasure.

“We thank George and Judy Dufour for their leadership and all of their work with preserv-ing history in Exeter – particu-larly Exeter’s Revolutionary War history,” O’Leary said.

The Exeter Chapter DAR’s next meeting is Monday, October 6, at 1:30 p.m. at Langdon Place in Exeter. Guests are welcome. For information about the Exeter Chapter visit http://exeter.nhso-dar.org and for information about the National Society DAR go to www.dar.org.

EXETER -Local residents George and

Judy Dufour have received the “Historic Preservation Recogni-tion Award” for their work at the Exeter Historical Society and the Winter Street Cemetery in Exeter from the Exeter Chapter Daugh-ters of the American Revolution.

Bonnie Flythe, Chair of the Historic Preservation Commit-tee for the Exeter Chapter and an Exeter resident, presented the award at the Chapter’s meeting held September 6 at the Exeter Historical Society. Barbara Zim-kunas, Curator of the Exeter His-torical Society, and Peter Smith, Past President, were instrumen-tal in the award process with their

strong recommendations for the Dufours.

“George has provided lead-ership as a volunteer and member of the Exeter Historical Society and Judy served as Secretary for that organization for years,” said Flythe. “Judy is a well-informed source of genealogical informa-tion for residents and for individ-uals visiting Exeter in search of their family history.”

Flythe noted that the Winter Street Cemetery, established in 1742, encompasses 2.9 acres and has 486 burials, including those of Exeter’s 22 Revolutionary War soldiers, two of whom were freed slaves.

She said that The New

minder that these whales provide about the endless mystery of the oceans,” says Amber Claxton, a Blue Ocean Society research intern. “There will always be more to learn, and that is to-tally humbling and fills me with wonder.”

Just as each person has a unique set of fingerprints, no two fin whales have the same chevron pattern or dorsal fin shape. Re-searches at Blue Ocean Society have learned to use this to their advantage and can now recog-nize individuals that have trav-eled through the Gulf of Maine more than once.

Another part of the Blue Ocean Society’s research on the boats involves cataloging local endangered fin and humpback whales. Their populations were reduced by whaling and now are facing threats such as collisions with large ships, entanglements in fishing gear, and overfishing

reducing their prey abundance.Cataloging whales and

marine animals will hopefully help the Blue Ocean Society to protect the many species that live or travel through our local waters. Since 1996, there have been approximately 400 differ-ent fin whales and 500 humpback whales photographed and docu-mented by Blue Ocean Society researchers.

Most people don’t keep whales as pets. For anyone who has ever had that dream, howev-er, Blue Ocean Society’s Adopt-a-Whale Program has made it a reality. Adoptions can be made by visiting the Blue Ocean Soci-ety’s website and choosing your whale based upon the several pictures and descriptions that are provided. Whale adoptions are available for only $30 each.

The adoption kits include a recent color photo of your whale, a sightings history, an adoption certificate, over 60 images of the marine life in the area along with their specific species information,

a fact sheet, a Blue Ocean Society decal, and a one-year subscrip-tion to their newsletters, as well as sightings updates on your ad-opted whale.

Recently, Blue Ocean Soci-ety spotted four fin whales while out on a whale watch, three of whom are available for “adop-tion.” One of the whales during that sighting is presumed to be new to the area, as it has not been matched to any prior Blue Ocean Society catalog pictures or notes. The other three whales, Comet, Dingle, and Fjord, have been seen quite frequently on Blue Ocean Society whale watching trips.

Comet is a female fin whale that was one of the first fin whales the Blue Ocean Society began tracking. In 2007, she surprised the Society by bringing with her a newborn calf, an exciting new addition to Blue Ocean Society’s whale family.

“I was able to see Comet every trip for almost two weeks,” says research intern Hannah Ny-lander. “Each time we got near

her, I got a smile on my face knowing that she was still here and the passengers were able to see and learn about her too.”

Dingle and Fjord are both presumed male fin whales that have recently been spotted near the Isle of Shoals. Dingle is the more social of the two and enjoys traveling with a companion. The two whales are sometimes seen with other whales but are often alone.

Along with Comet, Dingle, and Fjord, there are six other whales ready for adoption.

Whale adoptions are a great way to ensure Blue Ocean Society, a non-profit organization, can continue their important research and conservation practices.

Adoption fees and dona-tions go towards making sure your whale has a safe living envi-ronment, free of litter and debris. Beach cleanups and conservation efforts are making an impact each day.
