Michigan to Montana (M2M) Corridor

o US DOE selected M2M Project to receive

$5M (with $5M in participant cost share) in

January 2017

o M2M alternative fuel corridor will cover I-94

from Billings, MT to Port Huron, MI.

o 60 trucks and 15 alternative fueling stations

committed

o Project started June 2017

Page 7: GTI’s Michigan to Montana (M2M)• GTI managed two Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funded programs (late 90’s; early 2000’s) totaling over $5 million – City of

o Key international trade route connecting the Great Lakes and

the Intermountain regions, covering 1,500 miles, with over 18

billion annual vehicle miles traveled

o Significant number of alternative fuel stations already exist

along I-94 corridor (i.e. 690 Level 2 EVSE, 87 DC Fast

Chargers, 36 CNG stations, 72 propane stations)

o Over a dozen national park sites and 200 truck stops

o 5 military bases

o 24 major counties

o 816 unique fleets with over 22,965 vehicles

o The population of people in the counties that are crossed by

the I-94 Corridor is over 16.8 million.

Significance of I-94 Corridor

Project Goals

o Create a competent and experienced team to guide the

creation of an alternative fuel corridor to;

Deploy selected stations and vehicles

Provide education/training to establish a sustainable alternative fuel

and advanced vehicle market

Significantly grow the availability and use of alternative fuels and

advanced vehicles in markets critical for long-term success of these

technologies

Create a15% increase in petroleum displacement within each Clean

City Coalition’s geographic area

Develop and deploy a template that can be used around the country to

help other corridors to be expanded

A competent team and well designed plan ensures the M2M

Corridor will expand beyond the end of the project term.

Michigan to Montana (M2M) Corridor

The Project Deployment Plan;

o Provides leadership through community-based

partnerships with Clean Cities Coalitions, State DOTs,

SEOs, station providers, fleets, and utilities

o Leverages and expands on existing Smart Mobility

programs in this region

o Deploys fueling stations (electric vehicle (EV) DC Fast

Chargers, CNG, and propane stations) and CNG long-

haul trucks

o Identifies and fill gaps in alternative fuel station locations

o Provides outreach, education, and training to critical

stakeholders

Outreach and Marketing

o Dedicated website to highlight lessons learned, identify key

stakeholders, document best practices and leverage existing US

DOE information

o Case studies for specific industries and community partnerships

o Marketing communications strategy to build awareness and visibility

for promoting alternative fuel use in the seven-state region

o The outreach and marketing strategy serves as a comprehensive,

coordinated, overarching approach that;

Defines key messages,

Identifies stories and spokespeople,

Build awareness, and

Integrates overall communications between the various partners participating,

including the participating Clean Cities coalitions, as well as committed project

supporters

Smart Mobility and Policies

o Leverage project team’s experience in developing operating policies

and procedures that target deployment of PEVs, AFVs, and

infrastructure

o Engage Clean Cities Coalitions’ stakeholder bases as well as

community-based stakeholders and their networks, including car

sharing programs operating within the project geography (e.g.

ZipCar, Lyft, Uber, Maven, E-Rive, Hour Car, and others).

o Create increased connectivity between fueling stations on the

corridor working with several university and local fleet Smart Mobility

programs

o Implement a website (Fresh Energy) to support connectivity of EV

users and charging station owners to their utilities as well as training

dealerships and code officials.
