GTMO Port Operations Personnel Conduct Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain Program

Sailors attached to Naval Station (NS) Guanta-namo Bay, Cuba’s Port Operations department

facilitated the Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain (SimBoat) program Sept. 26-30.

In accordance with Commander Navy Installations Command (CNIC) instruction 3500.1, the course was held to qualify Sailors as small boat Coxswain’s.

“The week-long course features two days of class-room instruction, and three days of practical exercises on the water,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Jason Mickel, SimBoat program instructor. “We are teach-ing the ‘rules of the road’ for small boat operations,

including operational risk management, navigation, engineering, basic boat handling, and damage con-trol.”

The SimBoat Coxswain course provides a stan-dardized shore installation management program for training and qualifications of basic boat Cox-swain’s and crewmembers.

“It’s important for Sailors to know the funda-mentals as well as the rules and regulations of boat operations,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Christopher Pullon, SimBoat program instructor. “Facilitating advanced safety and seamanship sup-ports Port Operations and the Security department’s maritime strategy.”

Capt. Kirk Hibbert signed the proclamation recognizing October as DVAM and will be observed an-nually at NS Guantanamo Bay.

A single motor vehicle acci-dent occurred on Naval Sta-

The cause of the accident is cur-rently under investigation.

Representatives from Naval Facilities Engineer-ing Command (NAVFAC) Anti-Terrorism Force

Protection Program (ATFP), and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Installation Protection Pro-gram (CBRN IPP) coordinated CBRN IPP initiatives at Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Sept. 19-30.

The two-week data collection visit is designed to survey existing mass notification capabilities, commu-nications infrastructure, and response capabilities at NS Guantanamo Bay.

The CBRN IPP program is being introduced to NS Guantanamo Bay key personnel in preparation for fielding an integrated network of enhanced decision support making capabilities and a “Giant Voice” (GV) system design.

“The GV is an alerting system that provides both a tone type warning and a verbal warning to advise those within hearing direction during a CBRN event or weather-type event,” said Regional Support to NAV-FAC ATFP Program James Cox. “NAVFAC ATFP has contracted the CBRN IPP Program to deploy this sys-tem at select bases worldwide. The team is here to ac-

cess the current system and provide an upgrade and/ or add additional towers to meet the requirements of the program through a design/build process.”

Currently, the system in use at NS Guantanamo Bay is utilized for the playing of Colors and Retreat as well as a siren to warn of an impending incident or event. The type of siren sounded identifies the event and what actions to take.

“The team expects to survey the current system, de-termine a course of action to bring what is currently in place up to current working conditions, and to take away the information needed to design any improve-ments to the system,” said Cox. “The IPP Team will complete a design of the future state of the GV sys-tem, submit that to NAVFAC ATFP for approval, and upon that approval, will start the process of installing any new equipment and system upgrades providing a functional and relevant GV system for NS Guanta-namo Bay.”

Cox said during any critical CBRN incident or weather-related event, being able to reach the maxi-mum amount of people with a the same message at one time is critical to saving life and property, and allows NS Guantanamo Bay to continue fulfilling its mission of support to the Navy.

The singer/songwriter was featured as part of MWR’s community entertain-ment program.

“The MWR entertainment survey we launched this summer gave the GTMO community a voice for upcom-ing shows,” said MWR Community Activities Director Amiee MacDonnell. “The R&B genre ranked third in popu-larity based on the respondents’ vote. We found a great fit for this need with

Brother to famed musician John Leg-end, Anthony has struck out to create his own staple on the music industry.

“Coming from famous roots is hard as you start out in someone’s’ shadow,” said Anthony. “To be able to share my gift with people that have sacrificed their lives for our safety is an honor, and you can always expect me to provide music for the soul.”

Vaughn Anthony is from Springfield, Ohio and has toured with John Legend as well as other music artists such as Es-telle, Rick Ross, and D.J. Khaled.

More than 100 runners participated in the Mo-rale, Welfare and Recreation’s (MWR) two-

mile “Pirate Day Fun Run” at Naval Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Sept. 24.

The event began and ended at NS Guantanamo Bay’s Windward Ferry Landing. Residents were en-couraged to dress in pirate costumes while participat-ing in a healthy, family-friendly activity.

“Sept. 19 was the official day for ‘International Talk like a Pirate Day’ and we used that to initiate a ‘Pirates Day’ theme for the run,” said MWR Fitness Director Jennifer Norton. “This event gave the community a chance to get away from the competitive side of run-ning and simply enjoy a weekend fun run.”

At the conclusion of the run, participants were en-couraged to ‘walk the plank’ by diving off the Wind-ward Ferry Landing pier.

“It is always fun to take a running event that many enjoy, and add a little twist with costumes and enter-tainment,” said Norton.

The Hispanic American Heritage Association (HAHA) at Naval

Station (NS) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba hosted the HAHA dinner/dance at the Windjammer Ballroom, Sept. 24.

The event was designed to showcase diversity and promote awareness of Hispanic-American traditions, while honoring Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct.15).

“This experience provided the com-

munity with education and aware-ness of the Hispanic community,” said NS Guantanamo Bay HAHA President Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2) Jose Cabret . “The event highlights the importance of diver-sity and offers the chance to learn about different cultures.”

The HAHA dinner/dance fea-tured cultural food, music, and tra-ditional folklore dances.
