MESSAGE FROM VICE-CHANCELLOR

Universitys Academic Work at its Administrative Office !The excellence of a Universitys academic work is

determined by the work of the students and faculty members

in the laboratories, workshops and classes. At GTU,

however, a great deal of work gets done every day for creating an environment for better

learning.

The University has taken up the work of revising the entire sets of its syllabi in a

systematic manner. The process is as follows:

(i) An intensive engagement with industries to determine the needs of the industries;

Thus for DE syllabi, industries all over Gujarat were surveyed and more than 1,000

industries returned the filled-out survey sheets

(ii) Workshops with experts from all over the Country: Thus Dr. N. M. Bhatt, Convenor of

the B.E. Syllabi Revision Project, has organized two workshops for the BE Syllabi. On 2nd

February 2013, Dr. Joshua Earnest, Head of Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Department, NITTTR, Bhopal, Mr. D. S. Karolia and Dr Shashikant Gupta of NITTTR, Mr.

Krishnan Kant, Head for EMC Academic Alliance Program at EMC Corporation, Mrs. Naga

Nandini and Mr. Sudipto Das Gupta of Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology,

Bangalore, Prof. P. V. Madhusudhan Rao of IIT Delhi and Mr. Sanjay from Cognizant were

present in a full-day workshop along with more than 100 faculty members from GTUs

Syllabi teams participated in a workshop. Dr Mangala Sunder Krishnan, associated withNPTEL project at IIT Chennai was invited to a meeting of the B.E. Syllabi Committee on

23rd October 2010.

(iii) For preparation of the Syllabi, hundreds of faculty members devoted thousand of

man-hours selflessly.

(iv) Open conferences, where professionals meet the academic leaders to validate the

Syllabi. Thus the third semester Syllabi of DE have been prepared and are being uploaded

on the web-site. Three validation conferences for the Syllabi of the third semester are

being planned by Dr. Inderjit Patel and other members of the Council of Deans for DE

programs.

(v) Intensive Faculty Development Programs are then organized at Ahmedabad, Rajkot,

Surat and Vadodara all through the year.

(vi) Lastly after a cohort of students has gone through a program up to the Final Year,

the University organizes evaluation of the program through a group, different from the

teams, which designed the Syllabi. This evaluation of the course of CPD is being done for

GTU by IITE. Similarly we are working to involve the Management Associations to

conduct an evaluation of our MBA program. We do not think any other large University

has attempted such an intensive exercise. We believe that such a process will help GTU

graduate young persons, who will be able to serve the society well and create a place of

pride for them.

Due to its focus on students, GTU is being recognized as a University, which is

striving hard for excellence and which is succeeding in many ways. The project on

Active Learning and Creating Excitement in classes, Laboratories and Workshops

(ALCE) won a World Education Award 2013 in Higher Education on 23rd April 2013.Letthe Award spur us to do more since we have to work so that the entire GTU community

adopts ALCE enthusiastically. As we put the courseware, developed under ALCE, on our

web-site, it will help us become a better Learning University and it will build GTUs

reputation. High reputation of a University opens up, for all its graduates, excitingopportunities.

On 9th April 2013, Honble Dr. M.M.Pallam Raju, the Union HRD Minister, gaveGTU the National ASSOCHAM award for the best University based Innovation Ecosystem

for linking industry-academia and innovation.

In 2011, we had set a target of five years for every GTU thesis to be of excellent

quality. In March 2013, Professor Arun Somani of Lowa State University said, I found

more than half of the 27 thesis, which I examined at GTU, to be of American standard. "It

showed that our research students and their supervisors are well on their way to

attaining the standards of excellence in their work.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITYGujarat Technological University is a relatively new technology University

established by Government of Gujarat vide Gujarat Act No. 20/2007. The University

caters to the entire field of engineering, pharmacy, business studies (MBA

programs) and Computer Applications (MCA) in Gujarat. Today the University has

about 4, 00,000 students, a large number of Masters programs and a robust doctoral

program. It has about 500 Colleges affiliated to it. It is today the largest University

in Gujarat.

The University wants to be a leader in learning outcomes. For this purpose, it

continuously updates its syllabi and arranges programs for its teachers to discuss

issues of better learning in classes, lab & workshop. Our Faculty Development

Programs are organized at each and every week-end, at multiple places in the state.

GTU may be today the University with the largest number of such activities being

organized as compared to any other University in India.

GTU Innovation Council is the most active Innovation Council in the country.

Last year, it was able to send 50,000 students to the industries during the summer.About 500 industry leaders are members of 25 of its regional Committees (called

GTU Innovation Sankul Committees) and work jointly with Principals/ Directors of

Colleges/ Institutes for enhancing the industry-institute inter-action. During the

academic year 2011-12, the first cohort of the Final Year students of degree

engineering program completed 17,000 projects, as a part of the academic

requirements. 73% of the projects were based on industrys problems. 1900

industries have said that they have benefited from the projects. Based on student

projects, about 177 patents has been filed by the faculty members, students,

All over the year, GTU is continuously organizing seminars, workshops and

conferences to encourage research and to bring our researchers in active contact

with the researchers from outside the University.

During 2012-13, our eight-storey research lab building with 7,000 sq.mtr. of

built-up area and a six-storey PG Research Centres building, with a built up area ofabout 20,000 sq.mtr. are expected to become available. We hope that GTUs

graduates will build a new India, which may stand for a more harmonious and more

humane world, with a better quality of life for all.

Research Week At GTUPreparing and presenting the work of research is the most important task for the

Students and they seek lots of guidance to reach the desired level to complete the

assignment. To provide the support to the students GTU had organized three different

Research Weeks for Engineering, Pharmacy & Management streams. Many evaluators

from all over the country were invited to review the work of students. Many senior

professors and experts from several universities of Pune, Pondicherry, Lucknow,

Amritsar and many more evaluated students work during the research week.

GTU had also organized daily workshops with guest speakers from different

university and industry experts on different topics of students interest.

The Research week for Engineering was scheduled on 18 th March to 30th March

2013 and the Pharmacy Research week took place on 2nd April to 13th April, 2013. The

Management Research was planned on 24th to 27th April, 2013. GTU campus was buzzing

with knowledge sharing interactions among students and faculties.

All the faculties from different universities appreciated the initiative of organizing such

Research Week.

Faculties from other universities were impressed with the work of many students.

They found the topics of research and work of students relevant to the need of industries

and society. Some students showcased the unique and innovative presentations which

can also lead to innovation in future. Such combination of students and faculties made the

Research Week Event a successful initiative of GTU.

Reconstructing the curriculum to makeGTU world Class University

The education system is centuries old and it has always changed with the flow and need of

the time. When a university aims to reach the goal to stand among the world class universities

The Change is a key to success. The change has to begin from the base of the university to

reach the next level, which is the curriculum offered to the students. Upgrading the curriculum is

like an effort to drive the students towards the better source of knowledge with the changing

time. Gujarat Technological University has taken up the task of reconstructing the curriculum in

different courses to make GTU world class University.

Curriculum Development Centre for Diploma EngineeringGTU redesigned has established a Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) to revise the

Diploma Engineering Syllabus. GTU has collaborated with National Institute of Technical

Teachers' Training and Research Bhopal (NITTTR, Bhopal) who have the expertise in developing

the curricula fro technical educational programmes at national level. GTU and NITTTR jointly

developed a questionnaire to identify the entry-level competencies expected of Civil

Engineering Diploma holders to perform their jobs independently in an industry to avoid the

present long term training given to freshly recruited engineering diploma holders.

1st & 2nd Semester of the Diploma Engineering Syllabus has been executed in year 2012-13 and

the 3rd & 4th Semester will be executed in the year 2013-14.

Major Hi-lights of the changes in Diploma Engineering Introduction of competency based/outcome based approach in line with Washington Accord/

Sydney Accord/NBA requirement. For this purpose competencies are Identified and Validated

with the help of Industry. An intensive and exhaustive industrial survey was conducted for

each discipline.

Offering of stream specific Diploma Program with an intention to develop in-depth knowledge

and competency in one particular sector of that discipline, for example Diploma in Civil may

be obtained with specialization in following streams.

Diploma in Civil ( Specialization)

Diploma in Civil ( Specialization in Transportation)

Diploma in Civil ( Specialization in water resource management)

Diploma in Civil ( Specialization conservation and PHE)

The Subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Workshop and Drawing are made branch

specific to make them relevant to needs of branch.

Theory papers and theory hours has been reduced. While Tutorial Hours has been increased.

Provision of Tutorials is made in more subjects, especially in those subjects where students

find it difficult to solve the numerical.

Practical subjects and weightages on practical examination have been increased so that

students learn practical skills more sincerely and can perform better in industries.

Time and Space has been created for mini and major projects, seminars, assignment and

industrial visits in the curriculum. All these activities are essential to develop lifelonglearning, decision making, team working, leadership and communication skills. These activities

are made integral to the curriculum by providing time and marks for these activities. For

example: 10 credits have been allocated for Industry Defined Major Project in the fifth and

sixth semester. This is in line with suggestions from innovation council of India.

Even for English, provision is made for tutorials and practical (language lab) to improve the

communication skills.

Theory and Practical to be covered in courses are selected in such a way that their learningwould lead to the development of desired competencies

New procedures/instruments/equipment/software are made part of the content as per the

needs of the industry.

Instructional Strategies and teaching schemes are given for each course with list of learning

resources required.

To improve the quality of question papers, specification tables (blue print) for question papersindicating distribution of marks unit wise as well as for different cognitive levels as per Bloom

s taxonomy has been provided for each subject.

Some of the engineering theory subjects are shifted to higher semesters from first and second

semesters so that students may get time to learn basic sciences, mathematics and English

properly in their first year in polytechnic, and a proper foundation is created for better

understanding of engineering subjects in subsequent years.

MBAThe New MBA Program of GTU is based on Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and is

designed to serve three major purposes to enable our Graduate students become

confident, knowledgeable, skilled as well as successful in India and Globally. The course

curriculum and syllabus for New MBA Program of GTU is designed considering the

norms of AICTE/UGC, incorporating partial Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The

two year full time MBA is 99 credit program.

A Multi Level Skill learning system is developed as per mention below.1. The 5th Module(20 % of all coursework) shall be practical Module where GTU MBA

student shall visit and industry/ business/NGO organization once a week and make a

Grand Public Presentation at the Institute at the end of each Semester.

2. Global/Country Study Report in Semester III in the 2nd year of MBA.

3. Comprehensive Project Report shall be done in Semester III in any of the Sectorial

Areas listed over 60 by GTU by selecting Industry Defined Problem (IDP) and

present the actual project in the Semester IV.

New Major Specializations were introduced as per mention below.1. International Business Management

2. Banking & Insurance

3. Rural Management

4. Asian Business ( Immersion Study)

5. Sustainable Global Businesses (Immersion Study)

New Foundations Courses IntroducedGTU also introduced 5 different Foundations as English Language through SCOP,

Business Etiquette, Foreign Languages, Basic Quantitative Techniques and Spread sheet.

The students must earn minimum 9 credits from the listed Foundation Courses and it

will not be counted in the SIP.

DEGREE ENGINEERINGThe Bachelor in Engineering program offers the largest choice of engineering programs in

Gujarat Technological University, with a large number of distinct majors. The flexible curriculum

equips students to work in both established and newly emerging areas of engineering. In addition

to technical expertise, the program emphasizes essential workplace skills such as communica-

tion, teamwork, project management, problem-solving and lifelong learning. The changes in the

curriculum were required to fill the gap of academics & requirement of industry. Contents of all

the old curriculum has been reframed but titles are same.

Some new addition has been done in the 1st year in 2012-

13 batch of the Degree Engineering as per mention below. More

changes will be done in rest of the semesters as the batch

proceeds to the next level.

New Subjects Introduced Contributor Personality Development Program (Subject Code: 1990001) in Bachelor of

Engineering from 7th semester onwards to develop the students focus on self, organization

and society.

As mentioned Gujarat Technological University offers Bachelor of Engineering in a number of

branches and for most of the branches, the papers in the first and second semester are

common and the names of common subjects offered in the first and second semester of the

course.

The subject Elements of civil engineering is common in 1st

y ear. The subject deals with civil

Engineering Branch. In the subject, module of Civil Engineering Drawing has been

introduced, which gives the basic concepts of drawings and components of building.

In Mechanics of solids, module related to civil Engineering has been inculcated.

MCAComputer science is an ever changing field and so the Syllabus change in computer

programs has to happen more often then any other stream. Many fundamental things do notchange but the rest of the things change so fast that one must need to constantly revise the syl-

labus to meet the demand of industry and keep up with the rest of the world. New subjects are

added when there is a serious demand from industry. The syllabus is designed in a way that it is

not difficult for the teacher or student to find syllabus topics from the text.

1st ,2nd, 5th & 6th Semester of the MCA Syllabus has been executed in year 2012-13 and the

3rd & 4th Semester will be executed in the year 2013-14.

B.PHARMA group of pharmaceutical industrialist from all over the state was formed to revise the

syllabus for B.Pharm. The entire syllabus of all the semesters of B.Pharm at GTU are

revised keeping the industry needs in mind. The basic structure

of the new syllabus is prepared by the industrialist with the

help of academicians.

1st & 2nd Semester of the B.Pharm Syllabus has been executed in

year 2012-13 and the 3rd & 4th Semester will be executed in the

year 2013-14.

Elective Study The 7th & 8the Semesters are based on the elective study where in students can

select one subject out of more then 20 subjects offered. Students can also continue

their masters or specialization on the same subject further in their career.

Such specialization will help them in getting the job in the specific industry of their

specialization without spending time on training.

The students can go for jobs in community pharmaceutics, clinical pharmaceutics ,

hospital pharmaceutics or can also go for Statistician in Pharmaceutical Company after

specialization from elective courses.

Practical Training & New Subjects Statistics and practical training which can be helpful to be a pharmacist are introduced

Many subject like Nutrition & Health are introduced to deal with changing market.

M.PHARMSyllabus changes are not done in M.Pharm but two of the new subjects around

Quality in Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy are introduced.

These subjects are decided by the industrialists. The syllabus of the subjects is

also designed by the presidents & vice-presidents of the pharmaceutical companies.

These courses will increase the absorbance of the students in the industry as the

subjects are totally industry oriented.

Our laboratories must become Voyages of DiscoveryG. H. Patel College of Engineering & Technology, Vallabh Vidyanagar(GCET)

celebrated 17th Annual Day on 10th April 2013.Dr. C.L.Patel the honourable chairman of

Charottar Vidya Mandal was a former president of the event. Dr. Akshai Aggarwal,

Vice-Chancellor of GTU was invited as a Chief Guest of the event. Shri V.S.Palsule,

Director of Education & Communication, ISRO was the guest of honour.

Dr. Aggarwal delivered a motivational speech in the event. He said that it was in

1985 that china decided that their colleges and universities must become good. They were

really bad. In fact they did not even had anything IITS. In 25 years they have reached a

level where world-wide they have 4 Universities among first 50. It took them 25 yrs.

Dr. Aggarwal said that I have something to demandfrom all the students and the faculty members of GCET.

Please start working today in a way, that in 3 years you

stand among the top 10 in the queue. He said that Im not

saying to become among the first 50 of the world. Thats

what the Chinese did in 25 years. He said that if you

decide, it can be done. Excellence in higher education does

not come cheap. It requires not only hard work but also

resources. GTU has got boards like a Board of environment

engineering and green technology and a board for mobile

technology. Participate in Boards and GTU will provide

you the necessary funds to do what u want to achieve.

GTU also wants that student and teachers should

participate in international conferences. ASME has not less

than 100 international conferences going on around the

world. We have brought none of them here. They will come at the invitation of Professor

who participates in these conferences only and not on the invitation of the VC of the

University. Write papers, work hard and see that those papers are accepted in these

prominent conferences of professionals associations. When you will bring some tire 1 &

tire 2 conferences here then you will meet the Rishis of today, who are doing great work

on their own field. But u will be able to bring them through the efforts of researchers only.

Dr. Aggarwal said that we must make our classes , laboratories and workshops

interesting. Our laboratories must become voyages of discovery. GTU has declared an

award for the best material that you bring up for a chapter. Students and teachers can

work together to prepare course material for one chapter and show the practical work

required with that along with demonstration in an interesting manner. Lets put such

material on the web and let the whole world use it and let them appreciate.

FINAL YEAR PROJECTS at GTU Engineering

THE PROTOCOL:1) Each team in the Final Year project is required to give a self declaration form

countersigned by either industry who gave the challenge or faculty guide stating that

it is original and no third party project is directly produced and ethical practice has

been followed. (We are ensuring that market forces do not hamper the future of 1 lac

plus GTU final year students). We have got nearly 30000 such declaration forms from

all students of Diploma and Degree Engineering.

2) This time only 30 students will be examined by 1 teacher per day instead of 60

students per day which was the practice earlier. Each team will take half an hour forpresentation, so that jury can get the idea of original work. (This was the demand

from students to ensure that they are serious about their final year projects). In

addition to this even student organisations had requested for the same to do justice to

final year students and University committee chaired by Honourable Vice Chancellor

has right away implemented this.

3) GTU has made it mandatory that the internal guides should be part of jury in the final

year project exam to share the concrete efforts of his team/students with external

guide.

4) Two External examiners from different GTU colleges will give mark to each team of

GTU along with internal guide. This will increase accountability and authenticity

greatly.

5) Leaving apart these 3 examiners, the industry mentor (who gave the challenge) is

also the examiner this time! He will ensure the findings and contribution of the team.

This will be the biggest testimony of novelty and originality too. No university in India

has done it on such a large scale in the country by now.

6) Each examiner (whether internal or external / industry mentor) will have to share

their comments in written form to GTU about the team as well as each member of the

team. This will be an official record and the score of the students will also depend on

these inputs.

7) All these inputs will reach GTU collectively and GTU will analyse all the data. We are

concerned about originality irrespective of small or big challenge. We wish good

efforts of students despite knowing that few teams may excel very well but rest will

try their best.

8) Finally each Sankul team will supervise on field to gauge the exam process with

team of experts to ensure all the said things as above and exam process is running asdesired.

9) At last all projects will be posted on public domain of GTU Innovation Council so that

general public can comment and learn. We will award the best projects after the exams.

All projects will be submitted by each student online at GTU and colleges will track this

process to ensure it. GTU Innovation Council will be the 1st to publish all final year

projects on public domain. This will ensure our hypothesis that no student in future will

do, that has been done before.

Colleges performing innovative projected will be appreciated. We have started getting

very positive response from all stakeholders

THE RESULTS:

During 2011-12, out of 17,000 Final Year projects, 73 % projects were based on

problems of industries.

In the very first year, when the projects were presented for evaluation in May 2012, it

was found that 1900 industries gave the feedback that projects had benefited the

industries. A small industry in Vallabh Vidyanagar claimed that it had benefited by Rs 6

lakhs, due to our students project. A College in North Gujarat estimated that the total

benefit to the industry through the projects of the students was of Rs 1.5 crores.

On September 3, 2011, GTU started 2-day Workshops on Patenting in Engineering and

Pharmacy for faculty members. Six workshops with 140 Pharmacy teachers and 840

Engineering teachers were organized in all the five zones of GTU. On 29th

April 2012, a

centralized workshop on Drafting and Filing Provisional Applications was organized. 124

Faculty members participated in this workshop. It was followed by a 1-day workshop on

Filing of Provisional Patent Applications.

As a result of this effort, 177 patent applications have been filed till now. This is

something unprecedented in the history of technical education in India.
