HOLY WEEK AT GUARDIAN ANGELS

Holy Thursday – Foot Care Clinic with Arizona State University

Community Health Nursing Students. We served 119 guests (up from 93

in 2015). We had plenty of shoes, socks, food, love, energy and smiles!

Back when I was the rector of the Collegio Massimo of Jesuits and a parish priest in Argentina, I

remember a mother with young children whose husband had left her. She did not have a steady job and

only managed to find temporary jobs a couple of months out of the year.

When there was no work she had to prostitute herself to provide her children with food. She was humble.

She came to the parish church and we tried to help her with our Caritas (charity).

I remember one day---it was during the Christmas holidays---she came with her children to the College

and asked for me. They called me and I went to greet her. I thought it was for the package of food from

Caritas that we had sent her. I asked her, "Did you receive it?"

"Yes, yes, thank you for that too. But I came here today to thank you because you never stopped calling

me Senora."

Experiences like this teach you how important it is to welcome people delicately and not wound their

dignity. For her, the fact that the parish priest continued to call her Senora, even though he probably knew

how she led her life during the months she could not work, was as important as---or even more important

than---the concrete help that we gave her.

Easter Sunrise Mass – A Baptism and A Homecoming

Gary had this poem on his wall in the hospital:

i thank You God for most this amazing by e. e. cummings

i thank You God for most this amazing

day: for the leaping greenly spirits of trees

and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything

which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,

and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth

day of life and of love and wings: and of the gay

great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing

breathing any—lifted from the no

of all nothing—human merely being

doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and

now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

For the next 50 days, it’s time for feasting. It’s time to celebrate our beliefs that love is more powerful than hate and fear, that life conquers death, that light shatters the darkness, that God is big and compassionate and just and generous and merciful beyond all understanding…the world may be in Good Friday, but we are an Easter People! This does not mean we are cockeyed, Pollyanna-ish optimists, but that we are called to live a deep-seated hope in the slow work of God even in moments of grief and struggle. During Eastertide, we have 50 days to again celebrate our Baptism and imagine how we will live in the world in which Christ is risen, in which Easter didn’t just happen once, but happens always, in which Easter has become the way of the world. Now begins the most subversive, the most terrifying, the most transforming and joyous days of the Christian calendar, the 50 Days of Easter. May it be for us, and for the world, a great feast.

“The NYU Bible Study”

Do you want to read the Bible but don’t

know where to start?

Do you have trouble finding books in the

Bible during Mass and other church

services?

Are you comfortable with the New

Testament but completely lost when it

comes to the Old Testament?

No matter how hard you try, you simply

can’t get your “head wrapped around”

Scripture?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then

Our last serving adventure

to Paz de Cristo. Jeff didn’t

get the memo…camera

pointing at you means…

SMILE!

The “Not Your Usual Bible Study” is for you.

Most Bible studies focus on the interpretation of Scripture and its application to our lives.

But the “Not Your Usual Bible Study” (NYU) will focus on understanding the structure of the Bible, its basic history &

geography, and the chronology of events in both the Old & New Testaments.

The “NYU Bible Study” will be chunked into small units over the next year. We will

use Max Anders, “30 Days to Understanding the Bible”. We will supply the book. If

you’re unable to attend each session – that’s ok – as long as you read and study on

your own.

Films and videos will be shown to highlight certain sections of the Bible. These

lessons should appeal to all regardless of background or age (10+).

Unit I - “Not Your Usual Bible Study” - APRIL 10TH-MAY 22nd

April 10 – “Walking The Bible” PBS Video – From Creation to Abraham

April 17 – Anders: The Structure of the Bible

April 24 – “Walking the Bible” PBS Video-The Israelites in Egypt

May 1 – Anders: The Geography of the Old Testament

May 8 – Anders: The Historical Books

May 15 – Anders: The Creation Era

May 22 – Anders: Patriarchs (and Matriarchs)

Men’s Ministry

The men’s group will have a meeting on Wednesday April 13 at 7

pm at Community Christian classroom 2. The purpose of the

group is to create a gathering where men from our community

can connect with others for support, fellowship and deepening

bonds of friendship. It was suggested by some who attended the

information meeting that we focus on a book or similar way that

would challenge us. Pastor Ed has a book in mind, and invites

others to bring their thoughts/ideas. For more info or if you have

questions, please contact Pastor Ed ([email protected]).

Emmaus Ministry

On the road to Emmaus, two of the disciples encountered Jesus whom they did not recognize. As he spoke with them, their

hearts were “burning within them” as he shared the scripture with them, their eyes were opened later as he broke bread with

them. We have an opportunity to share the scriptures, to pray and

become and give Eucharist for others who because of illness or other condition are unable to join us in worship. We stretch out

our community to them. Here’s how that will work? We create a way for people to contact us and let us know that

someone is unable to attend mass on Sunday. That hopefully will be through a link on the

website for those who have email, or a call to Pastor Ed (480-459-7095). The person may also reach out to any of the members of the community who can pass that information on.

The information we will need is a phone number and an address.

Who will the ministers be? The ministers will be the people who make up our faith

community. Maybe YOU?

We will have a training session on Wednesday April 20, 7 pm, classroom 2 at Community Christian for anyone who is

interested in this ministry.

We will present the format and give training for this incredible ministry. If you have any questions, please contact Ed.

Thank you for walking along this journey with us. It is amazing how clearly in our words and actions we already communicate

Christ to others.

Congratulations to Monica and Wayne (and Christian)! First picture of our newest Angel – Baby Boy Cook!

Guardian Angels….thank you for your love and care through Gary’s illness. Your love gave us both the

strength to get through each day…one day at a time. We will continue to lean on you through Gary’s

recovery. We so appreciate the cards and the gifts and the visits and the yard work and the meals (I told

Gary to just keep “feeling not quite right yet” so I can come up with reasons that we need to keep getting

meals! ). We are so blessed to be a part of such a beloved community. Just like Guardian Angels is here

for us, I want to remind you that Guardian Angels is here for YOU too. Don’t be afraid to make connections

with people, don’t be afraid to share your needs, don’t be afraid to reach out in love to each other.

May you have a beautiful Spring and may God Bless You today and always.

Love, Pastor Sue
