WELCOME BACK!

It is so wonderful to be at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic School for a second year. We did so

many things last year that I am excited for the year to come. We hope that you are well and

that you and your children are ready for a year of study, hard work, activities and success.

Please read through the Newsletter and keep it on hand for the rest of the school year for it

has a lot of important information to keep you and your child informed. Ms. De Nino, our car-

ing Head Secretary, Mr. Monteleone our industrious Head Caretaker, Dr. Bianchi our dedicat-

ed Special Education Teacher and our team of hard working and professional teachers are

looking forward to creating a positive learning environment for your child. We look forward to

working with you and your child and welcoming any new students and families to the school,

as well as our very special JK students who are coming to school for the first time. Welcome!

The Newsletter contains pictures from our last month of school in June. We had over a thou-

sand pictures last year of St. Mary of the Angels students engaged in learning and sports

events as well as technology, the arts, charity, fundraising and other events. We had artists

and athletes in and participated in so many activities across the city. We look forward to your

continued support and participation as we work to create well rounded, resilient, safe and

confident learners. We continue with the theme of Harmonizing our Faith through Family,

Parish and School. This year, being the year of the Parish, we look forward to participating in

many activities with Father Landorff Garcia including a blessing to start the school year off

right. We will continue to celebrate Mass throughout the year with St. Bruno’s School.

Congratulations to our province-wide Welcome to Kindergarten Award Winners Ms. Bellissi-

mo, Ms. Hila and Ms. Tamburro, (see below) you do an exceptional job engaging our newest learners.

We wish fond farewells to Ms. Dias and Ms. Magallanes as they move to new schools, we will

miss their joy of learning and their efforts on behalf of our students and staff.

Thank you to our Staff who have worked so hard to prepare the school and welcome your

child to the 2016/2017 school year. We are so fortunate to have you back this school year.

AGENDAS & SCHOOL HANDBOOK

Students from JK to grade eight will be provided with a Catholic school agenda. The agenda is an excellent tool to de-velop organizational and time management skills, and to foster school/home communication. The agenda contains a copy of the Student Handbook for the school year 2016-2017, which contains school procedures and expectations, as well as prayers and Bible stories for you to share with your child. Please read it with your child so that we can work together to support your child’s learning. If further changes to the content of the Student Handbook are necessary throughout the year, they will be communicated in writing. Please return $7.00 to cover the cost of the agenda.

LUNCH AT SCHOOL

We are asking students who have parents and grandparents at home to please go home for lunch.

Staying for lunch is a privilege. Students who need to stay for lunch must adhere to policies and expectations set out

by the school and Board. If they are not followed, parents will have to make other arrangements at lunch. We par-

ticipate in the “Waste Free Lunch Program”, all students who stay for lunch must adhere to the following expecta-

tions.

Bring lunch/snacks in a re-usable container that is marked with the student’s name. Left over food must be disposed of in the school’s green bin program.

Parents are asked not to drop off lunches in the office, as students who stay for lunch need to bring

their lunch in the morning with them.

MONTHLY VIRTUES

As a Catholic Learning Community we will be

looking for and celebrating monthly virtues.

Please watch for your child’s successes in rela-

tion to following the virtues and participating

fully in our program that follows our Catholic

Graduate Expectations. The virtue for the

month of September is Hospitality, which in-

volves making an effort to welcome new stu-

dents and returning students so that they feel

they are cared for and that they belong. We

look forward to sharing our winners with you

at the end of the month.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Interviews are a formal opportunity for you to discuss your child’s

progress, however, you are strongly encouraged to contact your

child’s teacher when you feel it is necessary to discuss your

child’s progress. Please contact your child’s teacher by accessing

their voice mail or by sending a note in your child’s agenda.

YEAR OF THE PARISH

This year we are celebrating the Year of the Parish. We will be

working closely with Fr. Landorff Garcia from St. Mary of the An-

gels Church to be involved in many activities to enrich our learning

and faith experiences.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS

All students in JK to Gr. 8 are expected to wear a

uniform on a daily basis. The uniform consists of a

white or navy short/long sleeve polo shirt and a navy blue

bottom. Pieces with the school logo are optional. You can

purchase uniform pieces from any store. Clothing should

be plain with no logos. Please ensure, for identification

purposes, that the student’s name is written on the

inside of sweaters/jackets/vests and other clothing.

MEDICATION

Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of pre-scription medication during the school day, unless they have written permission from the parent/guardian and by the prescribing physician. These forms must be updated regularly and are available from the secretary. Staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense non-prescription medication. Please com-plete the Student Health Form, included in this newsletter, so that we can better monitor the safety and health of your child.

MASTER PERMISSION FORM

Included in this newsletter is the form that gives your child permission to stay for lunch, to go on walking excursions

to the immediate vicinity, as well as permission for release of information to be used to promote TCDSB and/or our

school’s programs and/or events. We are also inserting the student accident insurance form, should you wish to

purchase it. To ensure your child’s wellbeing, safety and participation in the school’s program, please complete

and return it to your child’s teacher by September 9, 2016.

SURF-RIGHT: ON-LINE RULES AND ETIQUETTE

Staff will explain the rules for the use of the Internet and e-mail. Students are expected to follow the established

rules set by school staff and by the TCDSB’s “Acceptable Use Policy”, if they are to use the computer for these pur-

poses. Please visit www.tcdsb.org for Board policy.

SCHOOL INSURANCE

Included with this newsletter is an insurance form, with an

accompanying letter explaining the insurance. The school

and the Board have no benefits or responsibilities pertaining

to this. Should you wish to purchase insurance, please re-

turn the insurance form to the Insurers.

STUDENT ILLNESS

Children who come to school are expected to participate

in all aspects of the school program. This includes taking

part in regular recess breaks with their peers. We are not

able to provide adequate supervision for children who are

ill and sent to school with the expectation that they will

remain indoors during recess. Exceptional situations must

be discussed with the principal.

ENTRANCE AND DISMISSAL

Supervision begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. Prior to this time, the school yard is not

supervised by school staff. Once supervision is available, please drop off your child and begin your day.

All students line up in the school yard to enter the building with their class and teacher at 8:30 a.m. and 12:15

p.m. Students who enter via the office at these times, will be marked late. Punctuality is important.

At dismissal, please wait for your child/children outside the school in the school yard, away from exit doors so

that ALL CHILDREN CAN BE DISMISSED SAFELY. Once you have picked up your children, please exit the yard.

Parents/guardians picking up children during the school day are asked to notify the office ahead of time in the

morning. We will work to have your child ready at the front office when you arrive.

If anyone other than the parent/guardian or the established caregiver is to pick up any student, especially JK/SK

children, please notify the office in writing with their name and your contact information to maintain safety.

All visitors, including parents/guardians, must sign in and out at the office. Please use the front entrance to

enter and leave the school at all times.

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM (416) 393-5228

Please notify the school, prior to 8:15 a.m., if your child will be

absent. Kindly leave a message on the school’s answering ma-

chine should you call before 8:00 a.m. Students are expected to

arrive on time every day. It is very disruptive to the student and

their peer’s learning when a student arrives late.

UPDATING SCHOOL RECORDS

We appreciate parent cooperation in keeping us up-to-date

regarding changes of address, telephone numbers, emergency

contacts, work numbers, caregivers, allergies and health status

and family doctor.

CSPC, CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL All Parents Welcome to Attend and Participate

On Wed., Sept. 21, 2016 at 6:15 p.m., the 2015/2016 Parent Council will meet in our Library for their last meeting. This meeting

will take approximately 30 minutes. Directly after that meeting we will be having our AGM or Annual General Meeting for the

2016/2017 School Year where we will elect our new Council. Anyone interested in running for a position on the Council is asked to

complete the Nomination Form attached and hand it in to the Main Office prior to Sept. 21. You may self nominate or nominate

another person. You must have the person’s full name and be willing to write a short biography about them telling why you feel

they would do a great job leading our council. After the AGM, the newly elected Parent Council will hold their first meeting. Last

year the meeting ended prior to 9:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:15 p.m. in the St.

Mary of the Angels Library. Please enter through the front of the school. We have a very rich tradition of hard working and dedicat-

ed parents on our school council. Thank you to last year’s excellent council led by Chair Mr. Paul Matos.

Safe School Inquiry Recommendation

Catholic Expectation of Students

The fundamental expectation of students in our Catholic Schools will follow the ethic of our Catholic faith, where empathy, care for others, and respect for life are pre-sent. If you are aware that a student or group of stu-dents is in a dangerous situation, then you should tell a caring adult in the school community immediately.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSURE

In case of an emergency where the students and staff are re-

quired to leave the building, all school staff and students will be

evacuated to St. Clare Catholic School. We will then contact you

so that you may pick up your child. In cases where adequate

supervision cannot be ensured, the children will remain in the

care of the staff until the end of the scheduled school day.
