Ocelots Dinner Program Announcement Thursday, June 6, 2019 Guassa Gelada and Masoala Red Ruffed Lemur Conservation Projects Featured Speaker: Dean Gibson, Curator of Primates for San Diego Zoo Global. She graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and completed a Master’s degree in Forest Science & Wildlife Ecology at Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Dean began her career as a keeper at the LA Zoo where she worked with a variety of species. She moved to San Diego to attend San Diego State, and at that time, began working as a primate keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Ten years later she left the zoo for graduate school. After completing her graduate degree, Dean moved to Madagascar in the role of Project Coordinator for the Madagascar Fauna Group and spent three years working on lemur conservation. On her return to the USA, Dean joined the Duke Lemur Center as the Assistant Director, where she continued to focus on lemur management and conservation in Madagascar. While at Duke, Dean also served as the International Coordinator for the first ever reintroduction of captive born lemurs back to Madagascar. In 2008, Dean returned to the San Diego Zoo as the Curator of Primates and continues to focus on ensuring high standards of care and management practices as well as addressing the on-going conservation needs for primates. Program: In her presentation, Dean will provide an introduction and update on two conservation initiatives, both of which have received funding through the Ocelots Grant Program. The Guassa Gelada Research Project is a long-term study of a wild population of gelada monkeys at Guassa, Ethiopia, the largest remaining expanse of naturalistic gelada habitat in the world. The Msoala Red Ruffed Lemur Project is focused on better understanding the red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) population of the Masoala Peninsula of Madagascar, in an effort to conserve this critically endangered species.
