Osaka began to play a great role in trade and cultural exchange with the establishment of its port, which opened in Naniwazu in the 5th century. The town enjoyed brisk business with mainland China and the Korean peninsula as well as benefitting from domes-tic trade links. In the middle ages, it prospered as a sea route and a land route terminal for pilgrimages to temples and shrines such as Kumano, and gradually a city emerged. Japan became unified under warlord Toyo-tomi Hideyoshi at the end of the 16th century. He built Osaka Castle and a new town as he realized its convenient location which opened to the sea and prospered along the river. In the Edo period (1603-1868), canals ran throughout the city crammed with busy boat traffic laden with products from all over Japan. It was at the center of the Japanese economy and distribution, and was known as the Nations Kitchen. The Aqua Metropolis is still going strong, as evinced by the Water Corridor flowing through the center of the c i ty. The greenery- f i l l ed Okawa R iver Nakanoshima (Dojimagawa River, Tosaborigawa River) and the busy Osaka signature Dotombori area are connected with the Higashi Yokoborigawa River and Kizugawa River, forming a four-sided configura-tion rarely seen anywhere in the world. The waterfront charm extends from there to the Bay Area. You can enjoy cruising in every season, relax at a river front terrace or caf, and visit various amusements and a world famous theme park. The charm of the Aqua Metropolis knows no bounds.

Osaka was the center of economic development in Japan for a very long time, which is why there are a great number of dynamic landmarks with a historical air. Midosuji main street, 44m wide and 4km long, is one such place. The areas around the north and south terminals of Midosuji are the flourishing Kita and Minami, faces of Osaka.Kita is rapidly evolving now. A highly functional dome roof has been completed this year at JR Osaka station, connecting the north and south station buildings. There are four busy department stores near the station. In the north district of the station, a new town wil l be born under the concept of water and greenery in the spring of 2013, equipped with offices, commercial facili-ties, hotels and residential real estate. Minami is a genuine Osaka area, especially Doto-mbori. Hozenji-Yokocho Alley filled with ambi-ence of olden times, the modern building of Namba Parks with its rooftop garden, a luxury brand street in Shinsaibashi and the like. The charm lies in this unique world where contrasting items co-exist unpretentiously. Abeno Qs Mall, the largest in Osaka, came into existence at the south gate of Tennoji and Abeno terminals. In addition, construction of the tallest terminal building in Japan is well under way. Please fully enjoy Osaka, a place which is always energetic and filled with points to see and enjoy.

Konamon gourmetKonamon means our-based food, such as Okonomiyaki Pancakes, Takoyaki (octopus dumplings), noodles, etc. and the point of good taste lies in using stock in the batter for Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki, as well as in Udon noodle soup.

From the dishes of the common folk to sophisti-cated Japanese eateries and western-style restaurants, just about everything is tasty. Osaka is a city of eat till you drop, a fact acknowl-edged by all and sundry. The key point of Osaka food is above all delicious fish stock to bring out the essential goodness of the ingredients with a light soy sauce. Any and all dishes will have a rich flavored stock made from kombu seaweed and dried bonito. In the Edo period (1603-1868), Osaka collected special products from all over Japan, when it was known as the Nations Kitchen. Blessed with seafood from nearby oceans, and abundant vegetables harvested in the suburbs, people developed a sophisticated palate, and cooks trained to sharpen and deepen their skill for creating Osaka dishes. Customers and cooks converse over the counter, where customers enjoy the view of cook-ing, and taste the freshly cooked meals. This style had its beginning in Osaka which is a city most particular about eating. As well as Japanese cuisine, chefs from all over the world trained in French, Italian, Chinese and ethnic cooking show off their skills. Collaboration beyond mutual barriers widens and deepens the food culture, only available in Osaka. Please try all the City of Osaka Taste.

Joy of food rich in varietySkillfully prepared Kaiseki cooking is the essence of Japanese food, which can be enjoyed easily with Shokado lunch-box devised by a cook in Osaka to bring Kaiseki along on a picnic. While Nigiri sushi in Edomae style is the main portion, do not forget traditional Osakazushi such as Pressed sushi and Steamed sushi. Among numerous pot dishes such as crab pot, Shabu-shabu (sliced pieces of high quality beef pot) and noodle pot, a blow-fish pot called Tecchiri represents Osaka. Casual gourmet includes cutlet on a skewer, BBQ, Tempura, and Konamon (flour-based food), and others. Enjoy them to suit your taste.

We urge you to come to shopping streets and markets to feel the liveliness of Osaka, a town of commerce. Famous places include Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street, the longest in Japan, and the noted tourist spot Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street. Specialty shopping streets offer variety. Nippombashi Den-Den Town has long been known for electrical appliances, but it is now becoming famous for rare comic and animation goods such as figures. Matsuyamachi-suji Shopping Street is lined with toy wholesalers for annual event items; New Years Day decoration, hina dolls, and carp streamers. Sennichimae Doguya-suji Shopping Street offers every kind of item for restaurants where unique Osaka souvenirs such as wax food samples are sold. You cannot exclude the Shinsaibashi Brand-name Boutique Area of luxury brand shops, the Horie neighborhood of unique shops and cafs, and America Mura (American Village), the origin of local young fashion and culture. Regardless of the items and prices, they all share ample hospitality. We guarantee you will be able to find something to suit you perfectly.

Traditional folk art such as Noh, Kyogen, Ningyo Jorurui Bunraku and Kamigata Kabuki, etc, has long been a living part of the Osaka lifestyle. In particular, Ningyo Jorurui Bunraku originated in Osaka about 400 years ago. Dolls come to life by the skill of the puppeteers, showing a stage face seemingly more human than real people amid Shamisen music and the Joruri narrator. It was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heri-tage in 2003. Compared with the spectacular Aragoto in Edo Kabuki , Kamigata Kabuki features Wagoto depicting duty and humanity, and also love between man and woman. Comic entertainment such as Rakugo and Manzai are enjoyed on a daily basis. Concerts and live performances of every genre are held almost every day. The Symphony Hall won the highest praise from the famous conduc-tor von Karajan, a hall of classical music with world class acoustics. In addition various perfor-mances can be enjoyed at any time including musicals at Osaka Shiki Theatre, play, opera and ballet at Umeda Arts Theater.

Castle FortificationsThe castle walls and turrets were designed and built during the Edo period (17thMid19thC) to prevent any hostiles from entering the Castle. The two-story Inui turret and the powder magazine with its stone walls and ceilings are places of special interest. Thirteen of the buildings in the castle complex have been designated as important cultural assets.

The Four Seasons of Osaka Castle ParkThe historic buildings of the Osaka Castle complex blend in with the natural splender of this 106.7ha site that is located right in the heart of Osaka. In the spring, people come to enjoy the plum blossoms (1,250 trees of 93 varieties) and the cherry blossoms (approx. 600 trees in Nishinomaru Garden), while in the fall they come to see the enchanting autumn colors.

Items on Display at Osaka CastleMore than 8,000 important cultural assets are stored in the main tower of Osaka Castle, the most impressive of which is the folding screen painting depicting the summer battle of Osaka. In this masterpiece that is said to have been commissioned after the battle by the Fukuoka feudal lord Nagamasa Kuroda, the commander of the eastern forces, the various facets of the battlefield are clearly depicted, such as the castle and town prior to their destruction and the terrible confusion in the surround areas. Other items include many good examples of the writings, armor and weapons, pictures and woodblock prints.

Construction of Osaka Castle commenced in 1583 by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who aimed to unify Japan as a nation. Two years later, the main tower was completed and used as a command post. This was burned down after the Toyotomi clan was killed in 1615 and although it was rebuilt during the Toku-gawa Period, it was struck by lightning in 1665 and was once again reduced to ashes. It remained in ruins for 266 years until 1931 when it was rebuilt to once again grace the Osaka skyline, this time with the help of public donations. Another restoration project was started in 1995 to restore the main tower to its former splendor, after which this much-loved dynamic symbol of Osaka was registered by the government as a tangible cultural asset.06-6941-3044http://www.osakacastle.net/english/ Accessible from Temmabashi, Tanimachi 4-chome, Osaka Business Park and Morinomiya stations on the Osaka subway network, JR Morinomiya, Osakajokoen, Osakajo-Kitazume and Keihan Temmabashi stations.
