About GEMI

Gujarat Environment Management Institute, GEMI - An Autonomous

Institute of Government of Gujarat was set up with an objective of preserving and

protecting the environment. The Institute is thus engaged in carrying out various

research/studies related to conservation, protection and management of

environment and by this means also has a mandate to work as a training Institute

in the field of environment management in the State. Such trainings may be for

Government Organizations, NGOs, Industries, and Academia etc. vide its

objective 3, as listed in Additional Objectives for the Institute identified by the

Review Committee.

In addition, the Institute to support its activities has developed full-fledged

laboratory equipped with the most modern instruments that carries out analysis

of water, wastewater, air, microbiology and soil from environmental point of view.

The Institute thus extends its expertise to provide great opportunities for

research and impart training to candidates/fellows from academic institutions in

order to encourage skill development and also for the growth of

scientific/technological research in the country in the field of environmental

management and conservation.

Who can apply

For Training & Dissertation

Candidates pursuing B.E./B.Tech (Environment/Civil/Chemical),

M.E./M.Tech (Environment), B.Sc./M.Sc. (Chemistry, Environmental Sciences,

Bio-Technology, Microbiology, Bio-Sciences or equivalent), M.Phil. in subjects

related to environment may enroll for training/dissertation. In special cases,

students of arts or other streams may also apply for training on issues related to

environment.

For Research

A candidate must be registered in a recognized University/Institute as a

research scholar, whether in India or Abroad.

Duration

Training & Dissertation

Short term program: Two – Four Months

Long term program: Six – Twelve months

Note: The application of training with a duration of less than two

months will not be entertained.

Research Duration

As per the regulations of UGC/University/Institute, where the

researcher is registered.

How to apply

For Training & Dissertation

Candidates will have to fill and submit the Application form for

Training/Dissertation, (refer Annexure – 1) in hard or soft copy to the Institute

along with their Resume attached.

For Research

Candidates will have to fill and submit the Application form for research,

(refer Annexure – 2) in hard or soft copy to the Institute along with the list of

documents prescribed in the form.

Selection Criteria for research, training and dissertation

Mere applying and submitting form for research, training and dissertation

in GEMI does not entitle applicants to a compulsory enrolment in GEMI.

The Candidates will have to give presentation followed by interview on the

topic mentioned as area of interest/research topic in the application form,

on the date and time intimated to them by GEMI through mail.

The selection of the candidates will be done on the basis of their

performance during presentation and interview.

The candidates selected to be enrolled for research, training and dissertation

will be intimated confirmation through the mail.

For training and dissertation: After receipt of confirmation mail from

GEMI, the candidate before his/her joining will have to submit a letter

addressed to Director, GEMI from the HOD/Principal of the

Institutions/University mentioning the following details:

The candidate is bonafide student of the Institution/University

Name of the course along with the year/semester

Duration of research, training or dissertation mentioning specific

dates

Topic identified for research, training or dissertation

Number of days in a week for which training is desired, specify days.

(For eg. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,…)

For Research: After receipt of confirmation mail from GEMI, the candidate

before his/her joining will have to submit a letter addressed to Director,

GEMI from his/her Guide or an Authorized Person of his/her

Institute/University mentioning the following details:

The candidate is bonafide research scholar of the

Institution/University

Topic of Research

Duration of research mentioning specific days and dates

After completing the above due procedure, a confirmation letter regarding

carrying out research, training or dissertation at GEMI will be issued.

Fee/Stipend

For Training & Dissertation

GEMI does not charge any fee for providing such training. Based on the

recommendation from respective project in-charge, the students from various

Varsities, Institutes, Colleges, Organization etc. shall be paid stipend as per below

and subject to the following conditions:

1. A student pursuing training or dissertation as a part of his/her academic

curriculum at GEMI has to give undertaking that he/she is not drawing

stipend from elsewhere.

2. A student who has enrolled for training at GEMI for a duration of less

than or equal to 2 months shall not be eligible for stipend. A minimum

of 3 months duration of dissertation/project work is essential for a

student to become eligible for a stipend.

3. Stipend will be paid to the student at the end of his project duration and

after satisfactory submission of project report by the student to GEMI in

the required format.

4. Student’s performance shall be evaluated as per the criteria listed below:

5. Maximum stipend to be provided to the student is fixed based on their

qualification and duration of work and is as below:

No fee, however, will be charged by GEMI from the candidate for providing

any training or dissertation with or without stipend.

For Research

The candidate applying here for research is not liable to be paid for the

stipend. However, the Institute will not charge any fees for acceptance of his/her

candidature for research at GEMI. He/She may be allowed the use of Laboratory

facilities at minimum or no cost.

Terms and Conditions for Research, Training and Dissertation

Regular attendance is mandatory during the training/dissertation period.

Periodic attendance may be required in case of researchers.

The candidate has to himself/herself arrange for his/her accommodation

facility as per his/her convenience.

The candidate shall bring his/her own laptop, however internet connection

may be provided to the candidate on recommendation from respective project

in-charge.

The candidate’s place of training/dissertation will be at Gandhinagar, but

during the course of training/dissertation, he/she shall be liable to go

anywhere to serve the requirement of the training/dissertation.

The candidate would have to carry out Research, Training/Dissertation work

with full civility and in accordance with prevalent social norms. The Institute

will take no responsibility for any uncivilized behaviour by the candidate

during training/dissertation and it shall lead to cancellation of

training/dissertation. A researcher in all such cases will be dissociated with

GEMI.

The candidate shall execute any field/laboratory work with full civility. The

candidate shall be provided adequate safety measures, PPEs, and safety

training/inductions.

The candidate will be responsible for safekeeping and return in good

condition of all Institute’ property, which may be in their use.

The candidate will have to submit a detailed report of training/dissertation

and only after the successful submission of report, the training certificate will

be awarded.

The Institute will not allow any changes in the final report as per the

requirement of the college/university/faculty.

For training and dissertation: All the data/information/results generated

during the training period will be the sole property of GEMI and neither the

student nor the faculty/college/university can copy/transfer/publish/use

any part of the information without a prior written permission from Director,

GEMI.

For research: All the data/information/results in parts or whole generated

during the research period may be published by the research

scholar/faculty/university with due acknowledgement only after a prior

written permission from Director, GEMI.

Since, GEMI is an ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 14001:2004 certified Institute, the

candidate shall remain well aware about the Quality and Environment

Management System (QEMS) Policy of GEMI and shall abide by the same.

Note: 1. In-case of discrepancies in any of the above mentioned conditions, the enrollment of the candidate as a research scholar/trainee is subject to disassociation/cancellation.

2. Director, GEMI may amend any of the provisions mentioned above to suit the objectives of the Institute.

wetlands, estuaries & marine water)

2. Rural Environment Study

3. Regional Ground Water Quality of Gujarat

4. Use of Sewage for Irrigation

5. Urban Air Pollution Study (Source Apportionment Study)

▪ Emission Inventory

▪ Ambient Air Quality Monitoring

6. e-waste and biomedical waste inventorization and management

7. Developing e-based environmental software’s/application pertaining to

GEMI’s project

8. Hazardous Waste Minimization/Reuse/Recycle/Recover

9. Any other project that the Institute may take up in future.

The exact topic will be given by the project head, considering the scope and duration of

training/dissertation.

For Research

The research topic shall be as registered by the researcher’s

University/Institute.
