st71 INDEPENDENCE DAY

"Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?”

Dawn broke on the morning of 15th August 2018, and people all over India rejoiced the 71st anniversary of our country 's independence from the clutches of the British Empire.

It was the result of years and decades and centuries of sacrifice and valour on the part of our ancestors and our revered freedom fighters. These were men and women of rare courage and foresight. Those early patriots may have come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, but they were united by a belief in a simple truth: that we are all created equal, that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

New Horizon Gurukul , celebrated Independence day with zeal and spirit befitting the occasion. Director of New Horizon Gurukul, Ms. Sargam Manghnani and parents graced the occasion. The Indian tricolor was unfurled in the school quadrangle. The march past contingent led by the council members took the National Flag salute.

Thereafter, the cultural program began with a beautiful rendition of the patriotic song 'Aisa Des Hai Mera', by the school choir.

Miss Swayamsiddha and Master Abhiram of Class 7 presented their thoughts on nationalism and patriotism, followed by Miss Kaasvi of Class 8, who delivered a compelling Hindi oration.

The program concluded with a power-packed dance performance by the dancers of the House of Prithvi, the winners of the inter-house group dance competition. Their breathtaking emotional performance dedicated to our nation's heroes no doubt left many in tears.

New Horizon Gurukul on one hand experienced the thrill of winning and on the other couldn't help a feeling of disbelief at the abject failure of our much vaunted players. There was shock, denial, grief and finally a resigned sense of inevitability. However, they also learned how to cope with disappointment and to be able to genuinely appreciate the good fortune, talents and abilities of the "winner" and then look forward to the next opportunity to try again.

Master Harish Thangaraj, School Captain and Master Arjun Khade, Sports captain, deserve a special mention for their play-by-play commentary. They added fervor to the game by offering personal anecdotes or strategy insights. They successfully conveyed the facts, mood and feeling of the game without overburdening the audience with too much detail.

The lessons learned through sports are always valuable life lessons. do not fear competition, value its influence on you - it inspires people to greatness…and we all win!

- MASTER VINEETH BHAT , X B

To quote, American football player, Vince Lombardi,

"Winners don't quit and quitters don't win.”

Competition provides motivation to achieve a goal; to demonstrate determination, creativity and perseverance to overcome challenges; and to understand that hard work and commitment leads to a greater chance of success. Competition teaches us to dig deep and find resources we never knew we had; provides us with the opportunity to think outside the box and explore other ways to succeed. The pressure to win or succeed can often inspire more imaginative thinking and inspires us to develop additional skills.

New Horizon Cup - State level championship was held from 2nd to 10th August, 2018. The basketball and volleyball matches were held at the New Horizon Public School quadrangle and New Horizon College of Engineering, Indoor Stadium. While the football and badminton matches were held at New Horizon Gurukul and New Horizon College of Engineering sports ground.

POWER OF FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is a person's voluntary choice to consciously pardon or excuse someone who has been the cause of distress or hurt. Forgiveness involves taking the burden of resentment off our shoulders. In the process, we become a happier person.

True forgiveness is about acceptance, letting go of expectations and avoiding a blame game. It improves our mood and brings inner peace.

Often, the hurt or distress caused by someone can be compared to a red hot boil underneath the skin, causing incessant pain. It eventually erupts out of the skin and the infection oozes out for the next few days. Then, it slowly recedes over time and fades away. If the core of the boil is not treated, the infection flares up again after a few days, causing the same amount of pain as was previously.

This is like saying "it is okay!!", but actually struggling to throw out the negative emotions that are still captive inside. This is superficial forgiveness. It may relieve us temporarily, but the festering negative emotions reside in the sub consciousness, just like the infection, and sooner or later flare up again. This hinders us from experiencing complete freedom and happiness.

Once a Yogi was having a bath , at the edge of a flooded river. A scorpion happened to float by him. Since the scorpion could die, the Yogi picked him up in his hand to take him out of the water. Immediately the scorpion bit him with a piercing poisonous bite.

Unmindful of the bite, the Yogi picked up the scorpion again and the scorpion bit his hand again. This continued to happen again and again until a man who had been watching, approached the Yogi to ask why he was trying to help the nasty scorpion.

The Yogi said, "This poor scorpion does not give up his nature of biting. Why should I give up the inherent human nature of helping others?”

We should not stoop down to the level of those who wish to harm us.

Practicing true forgiveness seems to be difficult at times. Here are four mantras that could help:• Compassion is the anti-toxin of the soul. Show

compassion, as people who hurt others may already be suffering from inside.

• M?ma?gala? t?ta pare?u ma?sth?// bhu?kte jano yat para-du?khadas tat. Suniti said to Dhruva: "My dear son, don't wish anything inauspicious for others. Anyone who inflicts pains upon others suffers himself from that pain. (SB 4.8.17).

• If we can't forgive someone, we may not be forgiven by others in due course of time. People often hurt others in ignorance and to forgive is a divine quality.

• Recall a time you made a big mistake and were forgiven. Remember what a relief you must have felt to be forgiven! Be large hearted enough when it is your turn to do the same!

Explore it all

There is a world beyond four walls, Teachers, books and ragdolls. It is to be explored by you;The doors are wide open for you.Go touch the sun, the sea, the sky ,The mountains rising up so high,The animals which thrive together, On land, on sea, hither and tither. The ocean lies undiscovered,With plants and animals yet to be nurtured. The warmth of the day, the cold of the night,All lay awaiting for your mere sight. But if you cannot, do not feel dejected.

Imagination has no bounds. The more you think, the better you are,Of tales and stories not heard so far,Of lands with history untold,Whose old myths for you to unfold, With foolhardies and nincompoops, Clever kings and their troops.

Rise above them all and capture,And introspect your own stature. When the dawn comes, retreat back,Into your own, little , safe shack.Say goodbye to your adventures,For tomorrow is a day full of inventures.

CHOOSE OPTIMISM, IT FEELS BETTER…

The health benefits to being an optimist are well established and substantial. Having a positive mental attitude can help you lead a more stable, less stressful emotional life, have stronger coping strategies and better health, with quicker recovery time from illnesses and lower mortality rates.

How can we do that?

Well, here are three components one can exercise to develop these special skills .

> I n c r e a s e s e l f - a w a r e n e s s b y understanding "how you operate" and make decisions.> Consciously select your thoughts, feelings and actions.> Develop empathy and principled decision-making to increase wisdom.

Can optimism be taught? The good news is that the answer appears to be yes.

Here are some easy techniques you can use to boost your optimism:

Avoid getting hung up on one thing. Sometimes you may feel like there's one situation that's holding you back. Maybe there's just one thing that has seemingly ruined your day. Resolve to let it go so it doesn't bother you anymore. After all, there's a whole world out there just waiting for you to experience!

Remember that there's always a silver lining. If you're having a bad week, it's not a reason to let negativity cloud your thinking. Seek the silver lining in every challenging situation. Remember that setbacks often occur right before you reach success.

Get over the past. Remember that the past is the past; it doesn't need to keep repeating itself. In fact, if you keep recalling the past, you are the one taking it with you into your future. Learn how to let it go no matter how painful it might have been. The future can be filled with great things, but a great future can only start when you've come to terms with your past.

Be thankful. Make a list of all the things you're thankful for in your life. Include even the smallest things, like the lucky penny you found on the street or the loving hug your partner gave you today. You'll most likely end up with a long list that you can look to whenever you feel like you're slipping into negativity.

Use positive affirmations. Nothing brings out optimism like the use of affirmations. These positive statements bring optimistic energy into your present. They are a way of communicating with your subconscious mind so you can maintain control over how you feel. Use them every day and every time you need a boost of positivity.

Surround yourself with positive people. Humans are social beings that can feel the energy of others. Have fun with positive and supportive friends and family members. Just being around positive people can lift you up when you're feeling down.

Watch your language. Do you speak positively to yourself and others, or are you judgmental and negative? Try to shift over to only positive speech. Practice using upbeat words while you focus on the positive in every situation. Remember that even a positive life has ups and downs. Life won't always be perfect, but there are many ways you can still make the best of it. Accept the fact that bad things will happen from time to time, but avoid dwelling on these things. You'll bounce back if you remain open to optimism.

Owing to the steady increase in Bangalore population, we continue to see space constraints. With growing population comes the growing problem of garbage. The city shall soon receive a tag of 'Garbage city', if we don't address this problem soon.

Cultivating a garden for pesticide-free vegetables and fruit is not very difficult .This is achievable. Most people would think the terrace is their only option, but did you know window sills can also be an option. There is no need to throw away plastic bottles or buckets. Reuse and recycle them to a grow small herbs like mint and coriander. We needn't spend a lot of money or material.

All you need is steady supply of sunlight, moisture in soil and manure. Soon you will see a flourishing garden in your home. You get added incentives too. Your beautiful garden will soon be home for small birds.

Our Garden is our family's contribution to Green Earth.
