Dress for Success Gala March 28, 2012 Girls’ Inc. March 31, 2012 Region IV Annual Meeting May 4-6, 2012 http://www.addc.org http://saddc.org/

It’s not April yet, but San Antonio has already seen almost 10 inches of rainfall in a little over two months. To put that in perspective, according to the San Antonio Water System, that is nearly 6 more inches of water than the city is used to seeing at this time of year. As much as I’m happy to see the rain, I hate the weeds that come with it. So I thought it may be fun to see if they serve any practical purpose besides filling up my trashcan.

Have you ever seen those bright yellow plants that look Sunflowers but aren’t? Those would be Dandelions. The leaves are actually edible and often used in salads. Their roots serve as a major ingredient in herbal remedies for heart burn, appendicitis, and kidney disease. There’s even a wine made out of them! Then there’s the nuisance that is Ragweed.

Ragweed is commonly seen on your favorite meteorologist’s broadcast but these weeds can actually be found anywhere in the northern hemisphere. There are 41 different species known to date. Besides a good sneeze, practical use includes direct application to the skin for muscle and joint pain, helping to heal wounds, and as a laxative. Another not so common weed with benefits is the White Clover.

White Clovers can be found all over the United States with the exception of the Great Plains. Their dark green clover leaves surround a white blossom. Due to their not so typical “weed” appearance they are commonly mistaken for flowers. Remedies include helping cure gout, coughs, colds, and rheumatism. The entire clover plant has been used in salads, teas, and also an eye wash.

Next time you reach down to pull that spiny weed, take a second to recognize they may save your life one day. Until that day comes, feel free to pull an extra one for me!

See you soon.

March 2012

Dear members,

It’s March and that brings us to Desk and Derrick Awareness Month. After reading the Region Director letters, it’s very obvious that our Clubs are all very aware of this special month. Now it’s time for the clubs and members to share their awareness of the many opportunities that our Association has to offer with potential members and sponsors in your area. Check with local media sources, sign up to volunteer with local industry-related professional organizations, and just TALK about Desk and Derrick with your coworkers and industry contacts. Spread the word!

President-Elect Marilyn Carter, Treasurer Lori Landry, and I enjoyed a brief trip to Tulsa, OK in mid-January to meet with Michael Gray, CPA, and André Martin, ADO Manager; we also had the privilege (and fun) of meeting with a number of the members of the Tulsa Club for dinner. During this visit, we updated bank accounts and signed contracts that are required to do business from our various locales. After the Tulsa visit, the ADDC Board met in Houston, TX on January 20-21 for the annual Budget and Planning Meeting,. For two days, the Board reviewed officer and committee reports, discussed many topics, and pored over the Association budget.

The Board approved a balanced budget, 2012 ADDC Convention budget and registration fee ($250), revision to the ADDC Membership Application/Renewal forms, and upgrading ADO computer equipment. Discussion continues on the use of social networks (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.). The special committee appointed last year is recommending the responsible use of these platforms, but at this time, the Association does not support their use. Be on the lookout for more on this topic in the very near future, though. The Budget & Planning Meeting Highlights and the 2012 Approved Budget have been issued to all club presidents and are available to all members on the ADDC website on password protected pages.

Membership renewal and dues transmittal forms are flooding into the Association Distribution Office (ADO) and André is processing them as quickly as possible with help from a temporary office worker. This is one of the busiest times of the year for our ADO Manager. In order to reduce the e-mail and phone request load on André, all members are asked to make requests for assistance through their club president, Region Director, or through me directly. We will funnel the request promptly and appropriately. Also, remember to use the ADDC website (www.addc.org) for forms, letters, manuals, and historic data before calling or e-mailing for them. The server host has been changed and the speed of response on the website is considerably faster than before.

In order to maintain privacy of our member directories and other Association-related information, the ADDC website password will be changed effective April 1st. The new password will be shared with ALL renewing and new members prior to the change.

March is the start of Region Meetings – with Region III kicking things off in Laurel, Mississippi on March 29th. In April, regions I, II, V, and VI will meet and Region VII will close things out in May. Please register for your respective region meeting to take advantage of the outstanding field trips, seminars, and business meetings being planned by the host clubs.

The “Crossroads of Energy “is a safe path to take you on many journeys – through Ohio, Illinois, Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, and Colorado. And, I can’t wait to see you at one of the Region Meetings. I am truly looking forward to our travels together!!

March 2012

Dear Region IV Members:

March is Desk and Derrick Awareness Month and I believe the Clubs in Region IV have each planned something special to promote our great organization.

The 2012 Budget and Planning Meeting Highlights are posted on the Association’s website (www.addc.org). A few of the items accomplished at this meeting are set out below:

1) Approved the 2012 balanced Budget;2) Approved Credentials deadline of August 1, 2012 for the 2012 Convention;3) Approved ADO Manager’s attendance at convention;4) Approved revising the Membership/Renewal Application form;5) Approved the publication of three issues of The Desk and Derrick Journal;

The article submission deadlines for the “DDJ” are March 1, July 1 and November 1. Have you ever considered honoring a Desk and Derrick member by taking out an advertisement? Perhaps you might want to promote a fund raising event your Club is having by advertising in the “DDJ”. It may surprise you when a member from another Club or even another Region participates. I hope you have noticed the speed in which you can maneuver on the website these days. Our thanks to Andre’ Martin and Judi Adams for the steps they took to make this happen!

If there are items you need to discuss with André at ADO, please e-mail to me and then it will be addressed with André.

March is the beginning of spring and our thoughts turn to flowers blooming and taxes! Begin thinking about your Club’s filing their TAXE 1 form. Vicki Newman is this year’s Tax Exempt-US Committee Chairman.

In your springtime plans, be sure and include the Region IV meeting in May and it’s not too early to be thinking about the ADDC Convention in Oklahoma City in September,

Until next month,

Judy

March 2012

It’s almost Spring!!! I love this time of year, when the grass is green and the flowers start to bloom. It reminds me that all things begin anew each year. It makes me want to get outside and put my hands in the dirt and encourage the growth of new flowers and greenery. The same thing happens in our Club. This month, we will have our annual Desk and Derrick Orientation at the March General meeting. The Board is excited about this event and we are looking forward to all of you coming to learn or re-learn what we are all about. This month, we are encouraging you to invite a friend and the Club will pay for their dinner. This is a great way to introduce your friends and co-workers to come experience a night with us.

Also this month, we have the Girls Inc. Science Fair at Rackspace. This year plans to be a huge event and we need your help. Can you donate a few hours on Saturday March 31, 2012? This is a great time to get to spend some time outdoors before it gets too hot and to spend time meeting lots of girls (and some boys) coming to learn about all things Science. We are planning to make the energy beads that we made last year. This was a fun and easy to do craft that also gives us the opportunity to teach the kids about our industry. Keeping in mind my theme for this year, "Inspire and Educate, through education and service" we have a fantastic opportunity to do just that!

In March, there is also the opportunity to support “Dress for Success” and if you would like to help with this event, please see Connie Harrison. She would love to have your participation with this.

So, how are you doing with your annual resolutions? It is getting tougher to keep them up? This is just about the time that people stop pursuing them. I would like to encourage you to be strong and keep on keeping on. Remember what we learned from our January speaker, Michiel Espach that the difference between success and failure of our goals is sticking with it. Yes, this makes perfect sense, but sometimes hearing it again helps encourage you to not give up. You can do it! FYI, I am keeping to mine.

I’ll see you at the next General Meeting or somewhere in the meantime. Send me a note if you have any suggestions or questions.

In Service,

Kathy [email protected]

New Members

We have had several new members sign up this year and we are so glad to have you!

If you know of someone interested in becoming a member, please see a board member and we will be glad to reach out to them.

In the next coming months, Jason will have interviews of our new members so that you will be able to get to know them a little better.

When you are at the next meeting, if you see a person you don’t know, be sure to go up to them and introduce yourselves.

News & Notes  Connie Harrison has been nominated for the role of Treasurer to the ADDC and Terry Ligon has been nominated for the role of Region IV Director for 2013. If any other members are interested in being nominated, please see a member of the Board ASAP.

Career Opportunities

Do you know of any new job openings? Please send them to Jason Magaña and we will get them published in the next Gusher.

Orientation Month

Don’t forget that March is Orientation month. This is a great time to bring a friend. In fact, the Board has approved covering the cost of the meals of any non-member that comes to visit during the March meeting. We have some great fun planned for that night and we are looking forward to everyone coming. Please see a board member if you have any questions.

Kelly Simmonds

Where do you work and in what department?

Tesoro Companies within the IT department.

What interested you about working in the petroleum industry?

There are so many areas that are quite interesting within the petroleum industry. I guess I enjoy the Logistics the most where we must move oil and products through pipelines, trucks, and rail.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (This could be professional or personal)?

Well, this one is difficult because I enjoy hearing different perspectives and try to learn from different individuals.

1. Last year was very difficult for me and my family due to my son having several medical issues. He is 6 months old and has spent a total of 6 weeks of his life in the hospital for different items: "failure to thrive", "open heart surgery", "g-tube and nissan operation". To keep my head up, I think of this quote:

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning to dance in the rain." ~Anonymous

2. On a professional level, when I question myself as to whether I have planned accordingly and made good decisions, I think of what a previous CEO said:

"The only way to know whether you have a great plan is once it has been executed successfully." ~Michael Long CEO of Payment Data Systems.

3. Here is my advice: We spend too much time focused on things that are meaningless when we should be focused on family, friends and ourselves as well. We should ensure that we consistently strengthen our mind, body and soul.

* Mind: continue learning by reading books, magazines and/or joining an organization like D&D* Body: eat healthy and exercise* Soul: prayer and join a local church

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

I enjoy teaching individuals and family to take control of their finances and get out of debt so that they can enjoy life. http://buckingdebt.com/AmericanDream.aspx

If your closest friends were asked to describe you in one sentence, what would it be?

Analytical, caring and reserved.
