Pilot / Small Deployment

App Server(Tomcat)

Database (MySQL)

Search(Lucene)

DSK1 – OS

DSK2 – conf, PS, DB, Search

All Filr services can be run in a single VM

Deploy for Success

3 Dimensions to Properly Size, Scale and Deploy:

How Much Storage Do I Need?

• What are the appliance storage requirements?

How Much Data Can I Make Available?

• Just how large can I make those Net Folders?

• How many Net Folders can I have?

• What about remote branch office data?

How Many Users Can I Support?

• How many appliances do I need?

• Will I need to Cluster?

Filr v1 - Storage Requirements

Considerations:

• Filr Virtual Appliance

– 2nd Disk (/vastorage), required for upgrades.

– Shared Storage (/vashare, NFS, Clustering)

– Personal Storage, Rendered files (temporary)

• Search Virtual Appliance (SVA)

– 2nd Disk, /vastorage, no NFS

– Recommend 2 SVA, Fault Tolerance, not load balanced

• Data Base Virtual Appliance

– Novell provides a MySQL Virtual Appliance, no FT, no LB

– 2nd Disk, /vastorage, support for NFS

– Recommend using in-house MySQL for HA, and FT

Insight into “/vashare”, “/vastorage”

NFS mount point• /vashare, mounted by all

nodes in the cluster

2nd Disk • Each node in the cluster requires a

2nd disk, /vastorage

Filr v1 - Storage Requirements

How much storage do I need to setup Filr?

• Filr VA (2nd Disk or NFS mount)

– Personal Storage

– # of users * quota size

– File Rendering (viewing)

• Search VA (2nd Disk)

– Index Enabled (word based search) approx. 11KB per file

– Index Disabled (no word based searching) 5KB per file

• DB VA (2nd Disk)

– 10KB per user

– 30KB per file: Index Enabled

– 20KB per file: Index Disabled

Filr v1 - Storage Requirements

Refer to Latest Novell Documentation Updates

– Installation and Configuration – Filr System

Requirements – Section 1.3.2: Filr Storage

Requirements.

Note Worthy

Viewing Files using any of the following methods will cause temporary

Filr VA storage (/vastorage or /vashare) growth:

– View HTML – in WebAccess

– View Details – in WebAccess

– Generate Preview – in Filr Mobile app

The storage growth will be at least equal to the size of the files being

rendered (./cachefilestore)

– Auto-cleanup after 10Gb threshold, else requires manual

clean-up.

File Rendering – Impact to Storage Growth:

Filr v1 - How Much Data?

Quick Recap and Level Set

– What is a Net Folder?

Novell Super Lab Results

Test Environment: SuperLab

Giga-bit connection to OES & Windows Storage

Large Filr Deployment: 2CPU, 8G Ram, 4G Heap

1st Pass Sync time ~ 730 files per minute

2nd & 3rd Pass Sync time ~ 2,300 files per minute

Observations:• In General, First File Sync takes more time• File Size does not impact the File sync time.

Net Folder sizing capacity in the works

Filr v1 – Data Considerations

To Index or Not?

• Searching by Filename

– Indexing not required on the Net Folder

• Word-based search

– Indexing is required

Does the Data change Frequently?

• Net Folder Sync Intervals

– Once a day vs once a week for static data

• Just In-Time Sync

– Provides that “realtime” experience

– Good for Data sets that change frequently

– Combine with NF sync schedules

Filr v1 - How Many Users

Considerations:

• Active Simultaneous Connections

– Understand how many users will perform some kind of file

activity at the same time

– File Downloads, Desktop File Sync, Rendering Actions, JITS

Guidance: 2000 Active Simultaneous connections will require: 4 Clustered Filr

VA’s, 2 Search VA’s, 1 DB VA or equivalent

QA in process to certify 10-node Filr VA cluster.

• Clustering must be used to Scale Filr Horizontally

– QA has thoroughly tested 500 active simultaneous

connections per Filr VA successfully.

– Filr can support thousands of users in the system We have one customer with over 30k users provisioned

Watch Out For …

• Desktop Client Related Gotcha’s

– Re-Indexing: may cause files to re-download to desktop.

– Following documented re-index procedures can avoid this condition

– Renaming local files that have been shared will cause shares

to be deleted.

• Worth Noting:

– Team is looking into “FIPS Inside” logo.
