Girls’ Basketball By Amanda Blackstone, Head Coach

The beginning of our girls’ basketball season started off alluding to a comfortable routine and familiar faces. The season promised to be challenging; ahead of us, we had the task of re-teaching the game to our new players, and molding a support system for our new ideas. Having made it to the second round of last year’s state tournament, our season ended fueling excitement in both returning athletes and coaches.

through was the hard work and strong performances from both groups. Both the boys and girls teams saw a group of experienced veterans match up with talented newcomers to make formidable squads. The ladies, lead by senior co-captains Caroline Holliday and Kendall Cohen, were a force all season long. Holliday, Cohen, and junior Maria Rocca all qualified for individual events at the state championships. Holliday ran the fourth fastest time in school history in the 800 meters, narrowly missing the states all time list. Katie Applegate, Taylor Van Sickle, and Ireland Gibson teamed with Holliday to earn to the ladies highest finish at states, a fourth place in the 4 x 800 meter relay. Alex Davis and fellow eighth grader Gibson contributed on two other relays with Holliday and Applegate and let it be known that they will be athletes to watch in the future. Junior Laura Carpenter missed thechampionship because of sickness, but the ladies rallied and put on strong performances despite her absence. While the ladies lose irreplaceable athletes in the senior class, the future looks bright with many talented athletes remaining in the program.

The men’s team was lead by co-captains Alex Zeleny and Noah Chodos, both of whom qualifiedindividually for the state championships. These two combined with seniors Phil Deardorff and Jake Graham to record a medal winning third place finish in the 4 x 800 meter relay, in the second fastest time in school history. Chodos rallied back for a third place individual finish in the 3200 meter run, possibly the most exciting race of the day. Leading with 2 laps to go Chodos was narrowly beaten by two athletes who had not run any previous

freshmen, Hailey Lawlor, and Jenna Chodos held their own on the court, surprising everyone with their passion and dedication to their new team. One of the best games we had all season was during the state tournament against Delmar. Hailey was the second

highest scorer as a point guard, and Grace Firestone had a season high of 21 points. Winning our first state tournament game undoubtedly sparks confidence for our future rounds. We succeeded against Friends twice this year, and Sophie McCoy came off the bench as a freshman, scoring her season high of 14 points, leading us to victory. For the past three years, Joanna Kelly was the heart of our defense. As a starter for almost her entire basketball career, Jo was consistent and relevant to everything necessary for our success. As our only graduating senior, Joanna’s future lies at Columbia University. Her efforts as both a humanitarian and athlete will be missed by anyone who has been in her presence.

My experience with the girls this season has been life changing. We’ve learned so much about each other and ourselves and our future is bright. Thank you to my fellow coaching staff and all our supporters. Congratulations to the 2009-2010 girls basketball team.

Indoor TrackBy Steve Sinko, Head Coach

Indoor track at Tower Hill in 2010 was marked with a number of occurrences different from years past. No field house left the team with no turf to defend. Sunday meets made for an out of the ordinary scheduling distraction. Sixty plus inches of snow didn’t make things any easier. Yet the one constant that shined

events. Graham and Zeleny teamed with sprinters Juwan Montalvo and Victor Walker to record a high finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Freshman Jackson Banbury ran a leg on the 4 x 200 meter team showing the men’s side also has strong young athletes ready to step up and represent Tower Hill in the future. As with the ladies, the men’s team loses many senior athletes who have given a lot to our team.

But again, talented athletes remain waiting to step up and continue the tradition of hard work and strong performances these athletes leave behind.

SwimmingBy Sharon Reynolds, Head Coach

The winter season seems to go on forever… Thanksgiving, the Holiday Break, Mid-Winter Break, and then suddenly it is all done. This year snow seemed to add to the length of the season and for a while I was advising people not to watch the weather. If they wanted to know when it would snow they just had to look at when the swim team had a big meet. Snow was guaranteed for those days!

The swim team was smaller this year than in previous years, but the smaller number gave us more space to practice and the team worked hard… most of the time! Our boys were limited to sophomores, juniors and one 8th grader, with the girls spread nicely throughout the high school and one 8th grader. We gained a nice group of freshman girls this year that added some nice depth to the team.

We have five graduating seniors; Meghan Lam, began swimming for THS as an 8th grader and for all that time has been a key member of the team. She and her mom (a nine-year swim team parent volunteer!) will be missed. Molly Rosen is known throughout the state as the girl

from THS who always smiles, even when she is swimming. She will also be remembered for “yelling” at Coach Reynolds while competing in a backstroke event. She was letting me know that she was going as fast as she could (complete with smile). Gabi Dressler served as the swim team manager. A meet was never the same if she wasn’t there. She kept the team and coaches organized. Taylor Martel, an all-round swimmer, could make everyone laugh. Logan Weaver was always smiling and a friend and supporter to everyone on the team, a true team player.

Overall, it was a great season with personal bests being achieved every meet. Special thanks to our captains Molly Rosen, Meghan Lam, Gabi Dressler, Mark Aboff and Chris Sepelyak. Thank you also to Shari Bennett, parent coordinator extraordinaire. Swim meets cannot take place without dedicated parents scoring and timing. Thank you to all that helped out.

WrestlingBy Jack Holloway, Head Coach

The Tower Hill wrestling team, like most of its winter sports counterparts, experienced a season of interruptions, postponements, and cancellations. A young (10 freshmen) and relatively inexperienced band of Hillers wrestled to a six win and six loss season. It was a season in which three difficult matches saw potential victories turn to last minute defeats.

The highlight of the season was the six-team Tower Hill Tournament. In the last match of the evening, sophomore Logan McCabe decisioned Jeff Carter of Woodbridge to secure the team title for Tower Hill. The Hillers nipped the team from Woodbridge by one point, 150-149.

Captain Demetrius Murray led the team in wins this year with 18 and also led in takedowns with 33. Captain Ben

Keller, together with freshman standout Reed Boyden, led the team in pins, with each scoring 8.

Along with Reed (135), Mason Nickel (103), Aaron Greenbaum (119), Will Mette (130), and Ed Van Lenten (189) were freshmen who saw significant varsity action, as did sophomores John Ierardi (140), Logan McCabe (160) and Stone Lieberman (215). Juniors John Edinger (125), Mike McCloskey (130), Harry Greenberg (171), Ryan Chenault (140), and Wills Morton (285) provided additional leadership to help co-captains Keller and Murray.

Hard work in the off-season will help this group forge a team to be reckoned with in 2011 and will go a long way to help eliminate the last minute losses that were experienced against Pennsbury, St. Andrew’s, and Friends this year.

The Hillers excelled in the classroom as well as on the mat. Logan McCabe and Will Mette were named First Team Academic All State. Reed Boyden, John Edinger, Aaron Greenbaum, Ben Keller, and Mike McCloskey were named Second Team Academic All State, while Harry Greenberg, Ed Van Lenten, Stone Lieberman, Wills Morton, and Demetrius Murray were named Honorable Mention Academic All State. Special congratulations to these scholar-athletes!

Boys’ Basketball By George Searle, Team Captain

The 2009-2010 edition of the Tower Hill Boys Basketball team was filled with overcoming adversity. With the field house under construction, the team was forced to share the gym with the girls’ team for practices and only had 4 home games. The team only managed two wins but was in close games night after night. The team was lead by returning players Nolan Bacchieri (co-captain) and George Searle (co-captain, leading scorer and rebounder). A new group of young players moved up to the varsity level and had an enormous impact. These players included juniors Alex Johnson, Bill Esposito, and BJ Williams; sophomores Matt Taylor, David Kullman, Stephen Kullman and John Guzzetta as well as freshman Angus Maloney. With such a young team and a year of playing together, the future of Tower Hill basketball looks very bright as it loses no one and settles into its home in the newly refurbished Carpenter Field House.
