AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL

Good Weather, Riding, Eating, Riding, Eating, visiting with friends and a little camping, what could be

more fun? If you haven’t guessed, I am talking about All Chapters East hosted by Chapter K.

We left home on Thursday the 15th for an evening ride to Gettysburg. I should have known it would

be a nice weekend because I made it through all of the lights in York. Pat and I rented a Deluxe Cabin. A

Deluxe cabin has two rooms, one good sized room with a queen bed and a

second room with four bunks. We were next to the bathroom, which helped

with those 2:00 am visits. The cabin was very nice but the next time we will

probably get one with a bathroom. After Friday morning breakfast, we took

a self-guided /scavenger hunt ride. We were joined by Eric, Linda, Bob and

Diana. Eric and Linda are very familiar with Gettysburg and lead us to a

nice little restaurant for lunch (the one by the Witness Tree). We returned

to the campground and decided to go back out for a second self –guided

ride. Friday night dinner was hot dogs followed by an ice cream run. Upon

returning we had our Chapter B campfire hosted by Bob and Diana. On

Saturday we joined Chapter K’s guided ride complete with a stop at the

Round Barn and a local motorcycle shop.

Some Chapter B members decided to cre-

ate their own ride lead by Craig Lenhard

to the Pine Grove Furnace. After a day of

riding we enjoyed a nice dinner again provided by Chapter K. After dinner

Chapter K handed out door prizes, lots and lots of door prizes with nearly

everyone receiving a prize. The big winner was Craig Lenhard who won a

$100 gift certificate to the campground. After the prizes were handed

out we all made our way back to the Long’s campsite for more snacks (like

we hadn’t already had enough) and great conversation. Chapter B had

twenty Chapter members attending All Chapters East. Some camped,

some had RV’s (the Ferlands tested

their new retirement RV), some stayed

in cabins and some came for the day.

The weather was good, the rides were

fun and Everyone had a great time!!

FROM ERIC CLAVIER

RIDER EDUCATOR

Rider Education: Fall is here

It looks like fall might actually be here. Temperatures in the morning the past couple days have

been in the 40’s and the leaves are starting to fall. I’m starting to see less bikes on the roads

as the fair-weather riders are already putting them away for the winter.

The leaves collecting on the road can create a serious traction hazard for motorcycles, trikes

and if conditions are right for cars too. The other thing they can do is camouflage road haz-

ards. Is that a flat stretch of road with a layer of leaves, or is there a pothole full of leaves, a

small log or some road kill obscured by them. Add some rain and the friction coefficient drops

even more.

The daylight portion of our days is also getting shorter so more of our riding is at night. Check

your lights. Are they all working? Are the headlights properly aimed? How clean is your clear

visor, and is it with you?

It might also be time to start carrying cold weather gear with you so you’re ready for a cooler

ride home.

Now for a request. I haven’t ridden a trike since I was 9 years old and it wasn’t even close to a

Goldwing. I have been improving my sidecar knowledge but I don’t have the experience to talk

trike like you trikers can. So, how about some Rider Ed / Safety / How To articles submitted by

trike riders, for trike riders? Wing World does it, so why shouldn’t we.

Saturday morning, September 10th, was already warm by the time we met at

our first host of the day, Larry and Ruth Ann Greathouse for breakfast/

brunch. Good food, coffee and conversation was a great way to start the

"warm " ( mid 80`s) day . Soon it was time to head out to next stop with Larry

leading the way.

Since we had time to spare before getting to our next hosts, Ron and Sandy

Spence, we did the Northern Lancaster County Back-Road Tour. Some of the

towns and villages we rode through were Durlack, Schoeneck, and Denver. We

took a water break in Terre Hill right along the main street. We were proba-

bly the high light of the day for them. Temperatures rose to the low 90`s by

then. From there over to Gap where we took a heat break and re-hydrated

again. According to the display there it was 97 Degrees. Then we turned right

on Rt 30 and left onto Vintage Rd. From then on I was almost lost(?), until we

arrived at Ron & Sandy`s. Rest, drinks, shade, and lunch. And a great lunch it

was too. Since the Spence`s live out in the country there was a good breeze

and lots of shade provided by the copula.

The day had been great and it wasn`t over yet. We had desserts to top off

our day. Now is a good time to thank Pete and La Verne for their help in as-

sisting the hosts before we arrived, Ron and Sandy led us over to the home of

Bob and Diana Long. By then the temperature was receding a bit and with

their home being in the woods it was getting better outside. Did I mention

desserts? Shoo-fly pie, nuts, fresh fruits, cheese cake, cup cakes, and, I think

a Boston cream pie, coffee and drinks.

With the conversations turning to trips that were coming up and the ones just

taken, it was a great way to end the day with friends.

Thanks everyone,

Richard

AUGUST AFTER GATHERING RIDE TO

COUNTRY JUNCTION

What is the story on this

trike???

TOURATECH USA is based in Seattle, Washington and specializes in acessories for Adventure

Bikes. Lots of stuff for the BMW’s, Triumph Tiger, Yamaha Super Tenere, Honda Africa Twin and

Suzuki V-Strom, to name a few. Also camping gear and apparel. You can check them out at

www.touratech.com. They’ve been putting on an Adventure Bike rally in Washington for a while and

last year held their first rally on the east coast.

They had 7 different group and self-guided rides on Friday and Saturday. Rides increased in

difficulty level with 1 being the easiest and 7 being the most difficult/technical. I opted for ride

4, the Rothrock local loop which went 66 miles and took 5-1/2 hours to complete. It was a shorter

route for the rider that wanted a little more of a challenge. It consisted of mostly dirt, with one

rocky “Drivable Trail” section to add a little more excitement. It finished with a fun twisty road

back to the rally.

Taking a break on the ride through Rothrock State Forest

Dane and I attended an Advanced Adventure Bike Riding class on Saturday, put on by the Pine

Barrens Adventure Camp crew from NJ. It was eight very hot, high energy hours and was worth

every minute of sweating.

Up on the Hill with Pine Barrens Adventure Camp, ready to start the course.

2016 Touratech Rally East

Linda and I attended the Touratech Rally East in Huntingdon, PA from August 18th to the 21st.

Well, I attended the rally with my friend and co-worker Dane, Linda had a nice relaxing week-

end at the camper in Greenwood Furnace State Park. We could have camped in a tent at the

rally, well I could have, Linda said no. But we opted for taking the Toy Hauler and having all

the comforts of home. And amazingly, I didn’t break anything this time.

The rally was held on private property with a lot of cut hay fields and woods that were availa-

ble for riding the courses and the Scramble Track. The owners are into adventure and off

road riding and are a distributor for Overland RVs and host an Overland RV Rally on their

property.

Main Rally Site

Jimmy Lewis and his wife Heather from Jimmy Lewis Off-Road Riding School in Nevada were in

attendance and put on several workshops to include a tire changing on the trail demo, body posi-

tion and balance, and a skills course demonstration. Jimmy has a long list of accomplishments

that you can see on his website, www.jimmylewisoffroad.com, but to say that he is skilled is an

understatement.

Jimmy Lewis testing the Touratech Suspension on their KTM 1190 Test Bike

PBAC also set up a large scramble style course that allowed the big Adventure bikes and riders a

chance to have some fun riding a course that was not a torn up motocross track. Large round

hay bales were used for turns and there were some steep up and down hill sections to test your

vertical driving ability. A couple passes each day was enough for me. Dane liked it so much, he

went for a fourth run on Saturday. Now he needs a new cylinder head cover, mirror and wind-

shield support bracket. He summed it up best by saying “he was getting a little too confident”.

Luckily his bike took most of the damage, with nothing broken on Dane, just very sore.

One lucky attendee, out of the approximately 200, who stayed for the prize drawings (you had

to be present to win), won a $3,500 Adventure Bike Tour in Colombia from Motolombia. Jimmy

Lewis threw in a 75% discount on one of his training courses for the winner so they could get a

‘tune up’ before heading to South America.

The class (abbreviated from their normal 2 day course) consisted of:

Gear and bike setup and review, covering suspension and computer settings.

Balance, throttle and weight distribution in technical terrain, controlling traction.

Importance of slow riding, play riding, visualization and expanding your comfort zone (which I

definitely expanded).

Riding positions and balance changing with speed and various surfaces.

Brake and power slide cornering, traction control. Common mistakes and risk assessments as

lessons progress.

Bad line, off line mistake recovery. Accident and crash causes.

Line selection, awareness and wide angle vision.

Planning and using all available terrain, space and features.

Rocky up hills and slippery down hills.

Using berms, techniques for ruts, mud and slippery conditions.

Log hopping, off cambers.

And a little bit of jumping. Why? Because it’s fun, and if you accidentally get some air, you

know how to handle it.

Ecology talk, what is special about the local environment, where to ride, where not to ride.

PBAC works very hard at teaching you proper riding techniques and respecting the areas you’re rid-

ing in. They work with local governments and ecology groups in promoting responsible riding and

keeping areas open for off road motorcycling. They are also involved with helping Back Country

Discovery Routes in establishing the first east coast route.

Having some fun in the “Rain Forest” with single track hills, ditches and logs. That’s me on the right.

The Grass Track covered a lot of acreage and was a lot of fun. Some very steep drop offs and climbs between the

fields made it even more interesting. You can see the rider counter-balancing as he power slides through the turn.

This is a screen print of what my Fitbit recorded for my heart rate during the day on Saturday. To say that I

had a good workout during the training would be an understatement.

DISTRICT NEWS

By Rick and Andi Riek

PA District Directors

Greetings everyone,

Andi and I just returned from All Chapters East at Drummer Boy Campground in Gettysburg

and we had a fabulous time. The campground was very nice but seeing everyone that turned

out was even nicer. Rich and Wendy and Chapter K did an excellent job putting it together.

Seeing the many different chapters come together made all the hard work worthwhile. Thank

you Chapter K for showing us all a good time. We really need to thank all the chapters that

step up and host these events. We understand all the work that it takes to put something like

this together and we truly, truly thank everyone involved in organizing these events for the

membership.

The dates for All Chapters West and East were also announced in Gettysburg. All Chapters

West will be hosted by Chapter W on June 9th thru the 11th, 2017 at Friendship Village

Campground in Bedford, PA. All Chapters East will be hosted by Chapter C on July 28th thru

30th, 2017 at Roxbury Holiness Camp in Orristown, PA.. Don’t forget to mark these dates on

your ride schedule calendar. The dates seem like a long time off but the way time flies by it

will be here before you know it.

The Pennsylvania District also had some exciting news to announce while at All Chapters East in

Gettysburg. The announcement came that we have some team members that have gone above

and beyond what is asked of them at this past Wing Ding in Montana. Gerry and Bonnie VanArt,

our District Trainers, have been awarded International Trainer of the Year award. Also Doug

and Cindy Motter, our District Educators, have received a merit award for their dedication to

the Rider Ed program in Pennsylvania. With their dedication to the Gold Wing Road Riders As-

sociation Pennsylvania District received an award in outstanding service for providing training

and education to the members of our district.

We also had some scary news while we were there. Wendy Wirt ended up making a trip to the

emergency room on Saturday afternoon. She had been diagnosed with appendicitis and surgery

was in her near future. All said and done she missed most of the Saturday events as she went

under the knife. Rich was worried to death about her but she was in good hands with their

daughters by her side. With them attending to Wendy, Rich could stay at the campground and

make sure everything went as scheduled. The last we heard everything went according to plan

and her recovery is going well. While there everyone signed a get-well card for her. I'm sure

she would appreciate getting a card from anyone that wasn’t there. (hint- hint)

We would like to take this time to thank all the chapters that sold our district raffle tickets

for 2016. We had everyone of our 21 chapters sell tickets. By now your chapter director

should have received your chapter return. Again, thank you for promoting and supporting our

district fundraiser.

Please don’t get discouraged about the riding season coming to an end just yet. Fall sometimes

produces the best riding time. With the changing of the leaves and the great scenery fall can

be our best time of the year to ride. Just remember the dangers of falling leaves and wet

roads. They can be a deadly combination. Also, hunters will be taking to the woods and the deer

deer activity will start to peak. Please watch out for all the critters running out in front of

you.

Safe riding until we see you again,
