    that engaged at least 20,275 youth volunteers.

    Abington, PA Senior High School studentstaught participants from 12 area highschools about global water challenges andhow to save water in their own communities.

    Hardwick, VT Union High School studentsworked with county and district legislators todraft and introduce legislation restrictingadults from smoking in a vehicle where

    youth under age 17 are present.

    Dolbie, TX Middle School studentsin the Communities in SchoolsService Club mentored 3rd gradersat a nearby elementary school.

    citywide or statewide coordination of GYSD

    that engaged at least 121,321 youth volunteers.

    Oregon Volunteers, Montana Governors

    Office of Community Service, ServeNebraska, Iowa Commission on VolunteerService, Michigan Community ServiceCommission, and Louisiana Serve

    Commission all ran mini-grant programs tosupport projects across their states.

    NYC Service partnered with Up2Us to host a

    Young People's Leadership Summit where600 youth participated in a day of service-learning and team building.

    The Minnesota Alliance With Youthhosted a GYSD celebration withentertainment and on-site serviceprojects at the Mall of America.

    UnitedHealth HEROES Grants

    333 $500 or $1,000 grants supported

    childhood obesity projects that engaged

    at least 83,853 youth volunteers.

    Camp Gator organized a mentoringprogram pairing University of Floridastudent-athletes with at-risk children.

    Students in After School All StarsHawaii organized a HealthyCooking Show and lesson plan to

    present to elementary students.

    Youth from Kid Power Inc. inWashington, DC connected

    environmental science withgardening and health through aCitizen Farm project.

    Sodexo Lead Organizer & Youth Grants

    10 $2,000 Lead Organizer grants

    and 25 $500 Youth grants

    supported childhood hunger awareness projects

    that engaged at least 6,199 youth volunteers.Pillsbury United Communitiesorganized a multicultural food driveto collect culturally relevant food for

    two food shelves in Minneapolis thatserve a diverse population.

    Youth from the Kentucky YMCA YouthAssociation visited one of severalcommunity agencies, learned about the

    organization and its hunger programs,and served on-site.

    Disney Friends For Change Grants50 $500 grants supportedwaste, habitat, climate, and water projects

    that engaged at least 5,271 youth volunteers.

    Galesburg-Augusta PrimarySchool students in Galesburg,

    MI helped clean a swamp torestore the watershed neartheir school after an oil spill lastyear in the Kalamazoo River,one of the largest oil spills everin the Midwest.

    Youth in Turkeydressed up as water

    droplets and handedout fliers to raiseawareness about theimportance of waterconservation in theircommunity.

    STEMester of ServiceGrants

    35 grants up to $5,000 supported teachers who engaged atleast 3,482 middle school students in STEM classes

    improving the environment or disaster preparedness.

    Students at the DetroitService Learning Academy

    created a program to provide200 elderly individuals withblackout kits so they will besafe and prepared during

    frequent power outages.

    Students at Lincoln IB WorldSchool in Fort Collins, CO

    researched uranium mining. Usingwater quality data collected fromthe Cache la Poudre River, theydetermined the effects of miningand facilitated a ConversationCaf session to engage and informmembers of the community.

    MLK-Semester of ServiceLead Organizer Grants13 $3,000 grants supported

    citywide or statewide coordination of

    MLK Day and GYSD as part of a Semester of Service.

    Students in Cleveland, OH worked with theNeighborhood Leadership Institute to host 15"fireside chats" in neighborhood centersthroughout the city on MLK Day to help

    identify issues and projects for their Semesterof Service.

    For MLK Day, the YMCA of GreaterCincinnati hosted a youth leadershipforum for students from five areahigh schools to kick-off a Semester

    of Service utilizing the Fulfill theDream leadership curriculum.

    GYSD Regional Partner Grants

    10 $5,000 grants supported

    regional coordination of Global Youth Service Day

    and engaged at least192,000 youth volunteers in 102 countries.

    Foundation for Democratic Youthorganized 200 Global Youth ServiceDay projects in Hungary, engaging29,156 youth volunteers insubstantive projects that addressed

    various issues includingenvironmental conservation, care forthe elderly and disabled, hunger andhomelessness, and engaging

    orphans and youth in the juvenilejustice system.

    In South America, 5,654 universitystudents from Argentina, Bolivia,Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Haiti,Honduras, Mexico Nicaragua,Panama, Paraguay, Peru, theDominican Republic, and Uruguaybuilt 1,253 emergency transitionalhousing units with Un Techo Para MiPais for low-income families who have

    lost their homes as a result of naturaldisasters.

    Youth Leaders for Literacy Grants

    Youth in Stevens Point, WI partneredwith Literacy for Little Ones, a readingproject at St. Michaels Hospital

    serving approximately 700 newbornsand their parents annually. Eachnewborn at the hospital received abook package that includes one babybook and a letter encouraging parents

    to read to their newborn, as well astips on reading to babies.

    30 grants of $500 supported

    literacy and reading projects that

    engaged at least 4,388 youth volunteers,

    starting on Read Across America Day.

    Students in FortWayne's UrbanLeagues Urban

    Teen Readersprogram read tofour pre-k/kindergartenclassrooms on a

    weekly basis forfive weeks.

    Special Olympics Get Into It Grants22 grants of $500 to $2,000 supported projects

    addressing childhood obesity co-led by

    students with disabilities and students without disabilities.After-School All-Stars LasVegas hosted a sports clinic inwhich All-Star students werepaired with Special Olympicsparticipants and completed afitness activities led by studentathletes from the University of

    Nevada-Las Vegas.

    The "Meet-in-the-Middle"group of special education andgeneral education students at

    Dueitt Middle School in Spring,TX organized a fitness flashmob encouraging students toget fit and taught youth in other

    schools how to stay healthy byplaying video games.
