December 31, 2017 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph

31 de Diciembre 2017 La Sagrada Familia, Jesus, Maria y Jose

Dear sisters and brothers of Holy Family, "And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17). As we come to the close of the year 2017, our hearts rise in gratitude for all the blessing our loving Father has showered on us. We have been so blessed in this year 2017. Through our Formation Towards Christian Ministry Program (FTCM), we have grown in our knowledge and love of God. Our ACTS retreats helped us a lot to renew and refresh our spiritual lives and to be the good stewards of all the gifts God bestowed on us. We continued with great enthusiasm our mission of evangelization through our various ministries and organizations especially our Religious Education and Youth Ministry. We have dedicated our beautiful ex-tended parking lot. We have reduced our debt to considerably through our ‘Growing together in Christ’ Campaign. We have reached our Diocesan Service Fund (DSF) Goal for this year $123,000. We have replaced all our church and chapel lights with LED lights. Even though we got the impact of the Hurricane Harvey, we experienced the love and protection of our Lord, as we all came together to help and serve each other, especially the most affected. Let us thank God for these, and all those amazing blessings God showered on us, in this year 2017. I thank you all for your prayers, support and great stewardship to our parish family, especially our parish leadership councils, committees, staff, ministries and organizations for their fabulous stewardship and dedication, without which we could not have achieve these amazing results. I can’t believe, this year I have completed ten years in Holy Family. After coming over here, I feel like time flies. Thank God, this December 27th, I started my 25th year of priesthood. I am so humbled to see and experience how our loving Lord guides and uses unworthy servants like me to continue his work of serving His people. Your continued prayers and support helps Fr. Joy and me a lot to fulfil the mission our loving Lord entrusted on us, and we will be always grateful for that. In this Jubilee year, I think, I need some renewal and refreshment. So, I will be taking a sabbatical for three months. I will be leaving on January 1st and be back on April 4th. I am taking a six weeks’ renewal sabbatical program in Jerusalem and the rest of the time I will be spending in our Oblates’ mother house in India. There will be two priests helping Fr. Joy in the moths of February and March. Please keep me in your valuable prayers and I will be keeping you all in my daily mass and prayers. Let us welcome the New Year 2018 with renewed enthusiasm, following the example and virtues of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and growing together in Christ as ‘One Faith One Family’! Wishing you all the blessings of Holy Family and a Happy and blessed New Year! Fr. Sunny.

Padre Sunny

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s no more unusual setting to celebrate today’s Feast of the Holy Family than Barcelona, Spain and the towering unfinished sandcastle known officially as the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. In 1882, the plan was hatched to build a vast place of worship in reparation for the revolutionary and liberal leanings of the city. The modern artist Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life to the pro-ject, living in the building, attending Mass daily, and giv-ing up his personal wealth. When people pressed him to pick up the pace, he responded, “My client is not in a hur-ry.” (Gaudi’s cause for beatification is moving along, and he could be the first professional artist and architect to be beatified.) The Spanish Civil War, a disaster for the Cath-olic Church in which thousands of priests, brothers, and nuns were murdered, halted work in 1935. In the 1950s work began anew, speeded up by computers in the 1980s. Still, the final stage of construction is not due to end until 2026. If the original methods had stayed in place, it would take several hundred more years to complete the plan. So far there are eight towers, with four to go. The highest steeple is three feet shorter than the nearest hill, since the architect didn’t want his work to surpass God’s artistry. The three faces of the basilica each have three doors, with the faces named Passion, Nativity, and Grace. The interior is crammed with geometric figures that al-most seem to spin, crazy-quilt windows, spiral staircases, and jumbles of statues and figures. Although inspired by ancient Gothic cathedrals, the style is called Expression-ist, and very little is left unexpressed by the masonry. If you can’t afford a visit, Sagrada Familia maintains a web site, and virtual visits are free. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE ¡Año nuevo, vida nueva! —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dachshunds and Great Danes

The vast physical and temperamental differences that exist among the nearly two hundred varieties of dogs (all capable of interbreeding) provides for us a perfect illus-tration of the richness of some God-created gene pools. Spaniels, terriers, beagles, greyhounds, bulldogs, collies, Chihuahuas, chows, and whippets-vastly different in size, shape, color pattern, hair type, and capacities, but all be-longing to the same “tree” of dog-kind!

Many branches, but one tree. God cre-ated the DNA code of this “tree” to read D-O-G, and while the world remains, no dog will begin to become a cat, nor will any cat begin to become a dog. If the present world were suddenly overwhelmed by a flood of waters, evolutionary paleontol-ogists of a future age (if evolutionism itself has not become extinct by then!) will doubtless assume that the fossils of dachs-hunds must be dated a million years earlier than the fos-sils of Great Danes!

In similar fashion, the evolution of the horse and of man have been “reconstructed.” Variation within kinds is the exact opposite of evolution, for the boundary lines established by God can never be crossed and the new var-iations that do appear (through gene recombination and sometimes by mutations) represent an essential weaken-ing of the individuals in these specialized varieties.

Just another folly of evolution, folks. - John C. Whitcomb, Jr.
